lack of sleep will make you fat!

a study done on sleep deprivation showed that lack of sleep increases the level of stress hormones (specifically steroids) in the body. these hormones increase blood glucose, blood pressure, and - yes, you guessed it - body fat! so, despite an apparent lack of rest, your body changes the way it stores energy because of the stress hormones circulating in the blood. were you aware that sleeping is therefore healthy in more ways than one (at that it makes you maintain your weight and it decreases body fat)? has this post helped you? do you not believe in the study? feel free to share your views!

Wow, I wasn't aware of this and i thought it was the other around. Because for instance, choldren that don't have enough sleep won't have proper growth and will be stunted, so obviously if you lack sleep you'll get thinner as your body hasn't got enough rest, your body can't generate new cells or stuff like that and you don't have the energy to do your daily routines. Anyway, thanks for sharing this info.

actually, as i've responded to posts in this discussion, it goes both ways: both oversleeping and lack of sleep cause weight gain, but the rationale is different for both. =) although children need sleep to grow, they don't need sleep to get fat. in fact, if they DON'T grow, then they will gain more weight rather than height, which will make them more pron to being overweight. say, for example, a four footer and a 6 footer. if they both gain 3 pounds, the four footer will get a much higher BMI (body mass index) compared to the 6 footer. =) thanks for posting!

I am a light sleeper and I find it hard to sleep all through the night. It is not that I do not want to sleep through the night, in fact I wish I could. All the studies that lack of sleep makes one fat, etc. does no good unless they are aimed at people who do not want to go to sleep and want to stay awake. So what about us people who go to bed at 10:30 pm and then around 12. wake up and do not go back to sleep until one, go to the washroom, then wake up around four or so, and then go back to sleep at around 6:30 in and out all the time? I cannot will myself to sleep all through the night and drinking milk in the evening does not help, not drinking coffee does not help. I do not want to take sleeping pills. Maybe if someone moved to my house, and knocked me unconscious with a rubber hammer, it might help.

hehe. looks like you have insomnia (and two types at that!) you have difficulty initiating sleep AND staying asleep. good sleep is achieved only if you go into deeper stages of sleep. and this is almost impossible if you keep waking up. you may need help from a physician. don't worry, most good physicians will not go immediately to sleeping pills (only the lazy ones jump to it). perhaps your sleep hygiene is not very good? like maybe you don't have a bedtime routine, or you watch tv till you fall asleep, or you sleep with the lights on? there are many reasons why a person develops insomnia. for you to better explore this, i suggest you sit down with a sleep doctor. and again, don't worry, a sleeping pill is the LAST thing a good sleep doctor will give you. :D

I would have to sleep more then, LOL. I'm kinda familiar with that fact 'cause some say that when you're lacking sleep, you tend to eat more to compensate for the stress and the resistance your body needed so when you eat more, obviously more fat and more weight added to your body. I would rather sleep then, and sleeping is the best, there's nothing like a good rest like sleeping.

yes, congratulations for knowing this bit of information. :) aside from stress-eating, they also saw the release of certain hormones that change the way your body stores and metabolizes fat whenever you lack sleep. a good amount (not too much, not too little) sleep is good for us in so many ways. who knew it will even help us maintain a healthy weight? ;D

Is it bad to oversleep? 'cause sometimes, you know, even when I have enough sleep, say 7 or 8 hours and I still feel sleepy like I don't wanna get up and I sleep again and wake up after like 2 hours or so. That's so oversleeping and I feel kinda dizzy a bit. Thanks for the info, doc! Nice discussion you have :)

as is true with almost everything in life, sleep is best done in moderation. :) oversleeping may also cause weight gain! after all, it's not just the quantity but also the quality of sleep that spells the difference. you can sleep 7 hours in one night yet not get enough quality sleep if you keep waking up during the night... going back to your question, yes, oversleeping may wreak havoc on your circadian rhythm, and it may also cause weight gain (just like lack of sleep). so it's best to develop good sleeping habits, which the field of medicine now discusses under the umbrella of "sleep hygiene." :)

Well, that makes me feel better. I have gained weight (hormone related etc) over the last 10 years, and I NEVER get enough sleep. Rarely sleep 2 hrs straight anymore. I know that is not good for your health but never connected it to gaining weight. Would love to read more about the studies.

i've been reviewing existing evidence and the evidence is very strong. i also think it makes a lot of sense because it taps on knowledge that is already basically known eversince (like stress and steroids and their role in metabolism changes). it's almost like dieting: eating too much will make you gain weight, but eating less than usual may trigger your body to go into a lower rate of metabolism because it may have mistaken the lack of food as "famine" or "war." the body is wonderful at that it has completely paradoxical reactions and is full of ironies. go too little or too much and the result is the same! :o you should really get more sleep. you might hurt yourself or another person because being sleep deprived will slow your reflexes and mess with your coordination. you will also look older! :o

Thanks for sharing this information this will really help a lot to those who think the other way around that less sleep makes you lose weight. I think that most of us aren't aware of this and your post helped us to be more informed. It would be great if you can add the site where you got this information so that everyone will be able to read on it. Looking forward to it. thanks for sharing.

i have already included one website stating the findings of the study (as a response to the first comment), but feel free to type "sleep" and "weight gain" in your favorite search engine, and you will be flooded with all the studies published at this time. take time to review all the studies available. :D thanks for posting as well! :)

So that's why I'm gaining weight!!!! Now I get it. I haven't slept well in 17 years and i figure about the time the reason I don't sleep is grown and gone I'll be kept up nights by grandkids. Seriously, I think that there are many things that can cause us to gain. Lack of Sleep can be a good cause too.

i know it seems bad that medicine seems to change its mind a lot, but i think it's a good sign. it means the world of medicine never rests. it is up to speed. it never sleeps. patterns in our society are changing, so its recommendations are changing as well. it may be confusing though. but with better information dissemination, all the new standards will be known by everyone. :)

that's true, there are many things that can cause us to gain weight. simply LIVING and getting old is one! (because as we grow old, our basal metabolic rate slows down and we are expected to have an average of 1 pound weight gain per year.) it's not only lack of sleep, but also oversleeping, that may cause weight gain. whew! it's so hard to keep a fit body nowadays. ;b

This is definitely true. I am a nursing student and we have discussed this topic in school. Lack of sleep doesn't only release stress hormones but it also slows down our metabolism because when we lack sleep we lack energy. But this doesn't mean that over sleeping can make you thin. It can actually make you fat because you store a lot of energy but you are not using it when you over sleep. Over sleep can actually also cause high blood pressure. 8 hours is the number of hours recommended for sleep. Over or under 8 hours is not good.

that's right, both oversleeping and sleeping too little can cause weight gain. :D i made the discussion about sleeping too little, because it seems harder to digest for other people. i'm glad you've learned this in school. as you can see in this discussion, a lot of people are still not aware of the relationship between sleep and weight regulation. i hope you respond to their posts as well so as to spread health teachings around. :D thanks for posting! hope to see you replying to the posts of those who don't believe quite yet (a doctor and a nurse learning this bit of info can't go wrong, right?)

I have heard people claim to gain weight because of stress, and stress can cause changes in sleeping patterns, so it is probably true in atleast some cases. If you sleep a lot and not eat much, you might lose some weight. I think sleep is considered part of a healthy lifestyle, so that is another reason that to me, it makes a lot of sense.

Well, you have the knowledge and qualifications and I respect that so I will take notice! I have actually heard this somewhere before and I too found it hard to believe as I have been sleep deprived for some time and have not gained weight but as you say there are exceptions to every rule. I used to think it was logical to believe that people who don't sleep a lot are thinner because they are using more energy than others who are fast asleep as we speak but the idea that your body could actually be storing energy due to stress hormones makes sense too. All in all I agree that sleep deprivation is not healthy. I know I don't feel great due to burning the candle at both ends and that I need to make changes. Thanks for the insight!

that's true, sometimes some things are hard to believe because they may not seem to make sense in the beginning, especially if the rationale is not well explained. and you're right, all in all, sleep deprivation is definitely not good for us in many aspects, not just weight issues. :D whether or not your stress comes from lack of sleep or something else, we all need to decompress and relax. stress hormones are there to sustain us in times when we need to make urgent decisions, but sustained production of high levels of these hormones is never good for the body. thank you for having an open mind! and good luck!

I always thought, that not sleeping make you fat, why? just look at people that do shift work, like nurses and so on most of them are over weight, also when people don't sleep well they tend to eat more to compensate the lack of rest that the body needs, I know for myself if I do not rest well I tend to put weight on.

Well, after I read what you said. I think it's true because when I became a mom I never had enough sleep and I gained weight. I used to be thin when I was in college and I sleep ten hours or something but I never gained weight. I know that sleeping is healthy because it renews our cells and makes the immune system better. But I love my weight now.

i'm glad you're happy with your weight now. you don't have to be reed thin to be happy. in fact, when you're reed thin (like the models), you're probaly underweight. a normal weight requires some degree of love handles, lol. you're right, a lot of wonderful things happen when you sleep. your body repairs itself, and your short term memories become long term memories, among other things. thanks for sharing your experience with us!

I know you are right. I have been dieting and exercising and I am 20# from my goal, but I have horrible sleep habits. I wonder how long it will take me to knock off the final 20 if I start getting the nightly 8 hrs. Articles about lack of sleep causing weight gain are everywhere these days. I really do want to get more sleep,if for no other reason that I don't feel healthy during the day.

that's a very good reason for wanting to sleep! if for no other reason than to feel better during the day is a very good reason indeed. i applaud you for your efforts to stay healthy. i hope you lose the stubborn pounds. try to get rid of stressors as much as you can - it's not just lack of sleep that makes you retain body fat, after all. i hope you get better sleep habits. it does wonders for the body. it can make you younger than your years. and, yes, getting enough sleep will make you feel like a miracle when you wake up. :D

yes, lack of sleep is one of the factors that may make you gain weight. there are other factors though, like genetics and age, so if you have any plans of losing weight, don't hesitate to ask a doctor to help you. the doctor can target all problem areas so that losing weight for you becomes a breeze. :)

If i don't get enough sleep a day, i would feel lazy and drowsy all day, if I want to lose weight, i would only sleep for 3 hours in 2 consecutive days , after that particular day, I would notice significant weight loss, I think it does vary , it doesn't apply to me that sleep deprivation would make your fat increase, aside if I don't get enough sleep, my eating habit does also affected, I don't eat much, it's a chain reaction to me, that's why I easily lost my weight.

i'm glad that you haven't gained weight although you've been losing sleep. yes, this may not apply to everyone, but it doesn't mean that the study's results are not valid. for example, we have proven that smoking definitely causes lung cancer, yet not all smokers have lung cancer. this is the same story with lack of sleep and weight gain. it may not always be the case with everyone, but the relationship is definitely there. :D thanks for sharing your experience with us! happy myLotting!

I totally believe in this study. a few years ago, I took over-night shift and I did not sleep enough in daytime. I was in that shift for about 2 years and in this two year I grew 20 pounds. In recent years I have enough sleep, and my weight cut back down.

yeah i believe on that.. People who's lack of sleep eats more than enough. Because the body compensate by means of eating..I'm just confused bout blood pressure.all i know is that when u don't have enough sleep bp will drop. well im not sure about that.

blood pressure eventually drops, but it can cause a longterm increase. for example, people who are going into shock eventually have low BP. but before they get low BP, their body tries to compensate by increasing BP. so although bp goes down initially, the baseline blood pressure of someone who is always stressed out (by lack of sleep, for example) will go up. :D
