They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but when I face a camera, the result is most likely a thousand grimaces, face pulls, or open mouthed freeze frames of 'nooo, I haven't done my make-up!'
If there's a camera around, it's a sure bet that I'll be a thousand miles away. I'm not one of those lucky "photogenic" types. In fact the camera seems to have the reverse effect on me. I can feel confident, sexy and happy with the way I look. But when I see the pictures, I'm ready to check into a health retreat, contemplate plastic surgery or never go out in public again.
What about you? Are you camera shy? Oh you're photogenic like the England Rose who was the darling of the photographers in her lifetime?

let me first say how wonderful it feels to know there’s somebody out there who EXACTLY reflects my position. So you know what I mean…as it is my face is a bit twisted, I cant make it out in the mirror and others haven’t seen any difference to it per se, but bring on a camera and its like a hidden hand twisting my face further, just skewering it up in the most horrible way. In the mid 30s now, I think I can count in the fingers of one hand, the number of photos of mine which actually flatter me. Its so disgusting and irritating and frustrating too! Like you, I know I am not that ugly, grumpy, double chinned old hag the camera makes out of me, but there’s precious little I can do. You know how frustrating it is, specially if you are in the mood for a family occasion, all happy and decked up and everybody’s in a mood for a great pix and reluctantly you give in, knowing fully well that even the ugliest in the group would look better than you in the pix

Sudipta! I am very much sure like Zandi you are 'under-estimating' yourself, when you say that 'ugliest in the group would look better than me'. I just cannot agree with you, on this account that too when I have never seen you or your photograph. I do hope that you look good in real life and in your photographs too.

Both of you, but believe me this is so true. I have seen this in many group photos…everybody looks normal, OK type, only I come out as this distorted bloated face. But I don’t see this piggy face in the mirror, so I think of myself as OK and confident enough to face the world. And believe me (though I harbour no superior feelings) I can see other ladies in my office who are far-more bland faced than me, but I just don’t know, they look far more presentable than me in the photos. Guess the camera does not really like me…Oh what the heck! I believe the Chinese (I think) don’t like photos coz they think that a part of one’s life force gets entrapped in the photographs…I think I’ll use this as an excuse

Gosh..what a description you make out for yourself, full of uncomplimentary adjectives string up to describe your pictures. I have that right in my mind too whenever I see my own image and this is putting me off in front of any photo shooting in family gatherings. But how would people credit us when we discredit ourselves. Maybe we are not as photogenic as the others but personally I can still feel beautiful inside and want to be appreciated for being beautiful though not necessary being a pretty face.

you sound like me. i despise to have my picture made. according to my family i have been that way all my life. most of my pictures from when i was a child i look like a mad bull. i have always felt so silly smiling at a camera. my kids fuss at me all the time. my oldest son was going through some pictures other day when we all were together & he came to one of me & he said here's mom, she looks like she was stoned. [i wasn't lol]some people do so well having their picture made i don't & doesn't sound like u do either. lol

lol...mad bull? I can imagine how fierce looking you are in pictures. When am forced to take group photos and the cameraman say cheese I could not put up with an artificial smile just to look nice in pictures. It turned out my mouth slant in the wrong side.

Oh good that you have found the right angle and is photogenic. So you know where to focus the lens of the camera. I think I am just way out of that. My friends say that I have a beautiful set of eyes but that pair of eyes never turn out good in photos. So I'll always fear of being photographed.

I am a camera shy when I was growing up. I dunno how to pose. I dunno what angle is best. Until I learned about it. Now I can pose with confidence and with the right angle so I will look my best on the picture.

Hey zandi! I am so not one for the camera either! I hate having
my picture taken! I can't stand the way I look in pictures.
I just never come out looking good. No matter how many times
I have my picture taken I always just don't look right! So
when I see a camera aimed, I duck and run!

Looks like you lack confidence even when the person behind the camera is someone you know.
Well, being interested in photography, I prefer to be the one doing the photographing, rather than being photographed.
I am not camera shy. Neither am I photogenic.
I like the way I look. And if the person wants to take my picture, they better be liking it as well. Otherwise, why would they bother to take my pictures in the first place? Agree?

Maybe it is the way the photo is taken. OR the camera used.
Or the way your head is positioned that is not capturing that beauty in your eyes that everybody sees.
Unless we have some pictures to look at, it is hard to tell which is which.
Maybe you can try reading up on some makeup tips to highlight the focus to your eyes when people are looking at you. Then when you get your picture taken, that would be more prominent.
There are a variety of ways to take a picture to enhance the beauty of a person.
You just have to find it. And yes, being confident with yourself will also show when your picture is taken. Some how, people who are confident, tend to have more sparking eyes.

I may not always be photogenic, but when I'm not trying too hard, I do look good. They say I'm photogenic and I look younger than my age in my photos.
Perhaps those people who always look good has gotten so much practice with all the posing and smiling in front of the camera. So, instead of running away, try to see which angle most fits your assets.
Good luck!

That's me! I actually like a lot of the photographs taken of me IF I don't know they're being taken. But as soon as you put one in my face and tell me "smile" or "just act natural" I can just about guarantee you it's going to be a bad pic.

I can totally relate to this and I truly sympathise with you. I always have at the back of my mind "the camera never lies" when I see a truly awful photo of me. And I also think....this is how others see me (insert "frightened" emoticon here). This last thought comes when I'm feeling that I look great and I'm anticipating a great photo for once.
I've taken photos of people and they say..."that's a shocking photo, get rid of it" but what I'm seeing in the photo of them is what I see all the time. . So it's not just us.
Even some people who are beautiful people take a shocking photo sometimes, especially without their makeup and backlighting. We just need to accept how we are and remember that we are still of value and loveable no matter what.

Yes, a picture is worth a thousand words, I go with you on this statement. Let me blow my own trumphet first. As far as I understand my photographs come out good most of the time, may be my face is said to be a 'photogenic'. I look same in my photographs as I look in my real life and my near and dear ones say that 'I look handsome.......'. It is for others to analyse how do I look in my photographs, because 'Beauty lies in the eyes of beholder'. It is but natural that we cannot evaluate our own photographs and for the assessment, we need to rely on others' opinion.
I have also noticed that in case of some persons, their photos do not come out good, on the other hand they look quite beautiful in real life, its reverse is also hold true that some of the persons look 'good' only in photographs, they may not look as good in their real life. I also failed to understand this phenomenon and why this happens.
How can you say yourself that you do not look good in photographs and so much and so that you contemplate plastic surgery? I partially agree with you on this argument of yours. It is said that - "A diamond does not know its value", therefore, it would be difficult for you to honestly judge yourself in the photograph. Have a photograph of yours sent to me, I'll give you my honest and fair opinion, how do you look in the photograph. It looks to me that you 'under-estimates' yourself in the photographs, though they come out good.

Yes, you appear to me over-critical of yourself. I firmly believe that you look graceful and charming in your photographs. You should not judge yourself, let others (like me) should decide it.

No I don't contemplate to show the ugly side of me in pictures. I can tell you honestly I have an oval face which has reshaped into a round shape with age. I have a pair of 'killers' eye but now gone a bit droopy but nonetheless still happy that wrinkles have not made an appearance yet. I don't think I would think of going under the knife, it will be an agony to think if it doesn't turn out successful. Maybe I am over critical of myself that it makes appearances in pictures bad. My only consolation is I am grateful to be born perfect and would not trade in anything more than what I have been born with. cheeeese....

I'm just the opposite! I love the camera and have been told numerous of times that I'm very photogenic. If there's a camera around best believe I'm primping ready to strike my best pose. LOL! Now don't get me wrong I have taken some awful, hideous pictures that I keep just to laugh and can't bring myself to tear them up. LOL!! I also don't just love to be in front of the camera but I also like to behind the lens as well. I love capturing intimate moments as well as photos that can be a bit embarrassing to the model of the moment. LOL! Hey watch a few America's Next Top Model episodes, or go to Tyra's website, pick up some techniques and in no time you'll be FIERCE and people will be contemplating plastic surgery to look like you in your latest picture! LOL!!!!

Hello my friend zandi458 Ji,
AS I look at your 'Avatar', and if you are in the real, I can say that you are a photo
genic personality. It is like we have an old saying, underneath the lamp, it is always
dark, lamp emits light to others. So you just can not decide about you. Please leave it
to others. I would only say taht you are my charming friend, who is sincere, religious
and caring for others at all times. Photographers can never x'ray inner feelings. So
just forget about that. may god bless you and have a graet time.

Most of the time when i see my photo i mostly find myself smiling. There are very few photos where i am series. Only if i took the photo by myself i can be series. But if some of my friends take up the photo the for me, i can't stop myself from smiling. But the smiling photos are nice than the serious ones.
