I too, am buying a new computer this year but I'm waiting for the new windows program to be released. This new windows is replacing Windows Vista and should be out the latter part of the year. It is currently being tested by a number of professionals in its beta form and everything I've read about it has been very positive. Unless you need to replace your current computer immediately, I'd wait for the new windows. In the mean time you can decide on how much ram, hard drive ect. you want on your new computer.

I have tested Windows 7 and yes, it is very good. However, Vista is relatively stable now, and I don't think it is necessary to wait for it to come out. Could be nice to get 7 pre-installed, though. Warning: the release date of 7 is not absolute.

Sorry I wasn't clear - when I said '7' I just meant Windows 7. Abbreviating is a bad habit I have.

Come'on moon! your killing me!! lmao. Im kidding!!.. I was just looking at this really nice black dell.. it was a dell inspirion 530..
only thing is my sister has it on her colleges website she gets a discount and it comes with a 19" flat screen monitor,,great specs.2 year waranty only one downfall is i will have to suck it up and go with vista...BUT to back that up. i get a free 1 year live tutor to teach me how to work vista and learn all about it...
$498..... I can just imagine it now sitting here in my living room, matching my couch and love seat hahahaha...
Have you had a bad experience with dell?.... if so tell me baout it. i wanna know before i get a dell.. my sister has had her dell for 8 years now and the thing is still going strong so... im not sure what one she has but its still in good condition..

I will not recommend between a desktop or laptop - that is up to you, and how you want to use your computer. Either way - I always recommend Macs, I have a MacBook Pro and love it. Apples are a bit pricey though. Dell machines are good - if you get a laptop, their Latitude line is the best, Studios are still pretty good; and Inspirons, while decent, are not built as solidly as Latitudes. I would still prefer any Dell over an HP or Sony. Any Dell desktop should be decent. Toshiba laptops are the some of the best I have ever seen - like Dell Latitudes, they approach indestructible. Specs: get an Intel Core 2 Duo processor - depending on what you want out of it, get a slower or faster clock speed - eg 2.0 GHz (gigahertz). A higher number means faster, but the slowest C2D can handle basic functions easily. Note: a new Intel processor has come out - the Core i7, but it does not have a laptop version out yet, which may come soon. You would only need this for a high-end computer. Get 2 GB of RAM (memory), unless you have real need of doing a lot- then get 4 GB. Less will not run Vista effectively. Always get an even number; odd numbers make a certain technology to make RAM work better not work. Hard disk (or drive) size is up to you-if you need room for a lot of music, video, and pictures, at least 250 GB is best.

Hmmmm, I think the computer i went with has a 2.5 processor...let me go look. k this is what i got
2.2 GHz Intel Celeron processor
2 GB RAM, 250 GB hard drive
DVD burner, Windows Vista Home Basic
do you think the 2.2 thing will mess me up?....
thanks

Well, the clock speed is fine, but I never recommend or use Celeron processors. The speed isn't the only thing that matters in a processor, and Celerons are very low-end in those areas. It shouldn't be too bad, but a 2.0 or even 1.8 GHz Core 2 Duo might have been better... But I think the Celeron should serve you, it just won't have that much horsepower.

i think you have to be more specific about your question. do you want a desktop/laptop? what kind of work are you going to have in it.like surfing downloading/uploading,listeing to song.
more than these.working with photoshop, creating some 3d animated magics...

Hi,
how you doin? who was that other person with my name that you met before me...
I think you should go for "dell inspiron 1525".the things that you have mentioned like surfing the net, loading some games and downloading/uploading pictures will be done effortlessly with it. and it has the pentium (core 2 duo t6400)processor which will take care of your photoshop things as well.
In case you want to do more than this like some html/xml thing, grphic design thing then its also capable of perferming it...
well, the above is my personal choice.but i would suggest you to go for some online research before buying any...happy my lotting :)

A lot of good advice here!! I guess I'll add my two cents worth. I am partial to a desktop computer unless you really need a laptop so you can take it on the go. With a desktop you will have what I consider to be an easily upgradeable system. The tower will be a lot easier to add another hard drive for space or an extra dvd drive or even upgrade your rem memory simply. The laptop is harder to upgrade because of the casing and the drives and memory will be more expensive for the laptop. I like the desktop also because of the ease I can add periphials such as printers, webcams, scanners, etc.
As far as the brand I like Dell the best but Best Buy carries the "E-Machine" that can be quite affordable. Most of the new computers will have vista installed on it already but you may still find some with windows xp still on them which I prefer. I don't see the need to try to get the newest computer on the market if you are just going to use it for general purposes. You should be able to find one on special for anywhere from $400.00 to $800.00 . Also, if you already have a computer and want to use the monitor and keyboard, mouse etc. that you already have then you could just buy the computer tower without all the accessories and get a pretty good deal.
I have owned Dell, Gateway, Hewlitt Packard, Acer, and probably a couple more I don't remember right off and I must say I like Dell and Gateway the best although Gateway tends to be more expensive. I like the E-Machines at Best Buy too. They are an excellent value for the money. I have only heard good things about them and although I have never bought one I have used them and I would buy one in the future.

That is true - if you are looking for a netbook (ultra-portable laptop, essentially), get an Intel Atom processor. I recommend either, as above, and Asus EE PC or an Acer Aspire One. 1 GB of RAM should work, as these usually come with either Windows XP or Linux.

xXxMikesWifeyxXx,
As far as specs is concerned, I would say to go for the best and latest but not before looking at that affordability issue. Since this is a laptop you are looking at I am sure you will need to look into the portability issues like size and weight especially when you are going to carry it with you when you go about your day.
As you are aware that the new OS is being improved and introduced, your hardware should be ready for such needed upgrading changes in the near future. So, it will need to be the latest chip set motherboard and sufficient latest RAMS. Then, there will be the handy features that you should try to have like wireless access WI-FII, bluetooth, fingerprint recognition, and in-built web cam. These are actually quite necessary and handy for your current and future use.
With regards to the brands to go for, you would just have to hear and look into the various after sales service from your friends and colleagues. From experience, I have never been disappointed by HP and IBM who has very well reputable, reliable and sound after sales services world wide. So, this is a plus factor if your laptop is going places with you.
Hope the above tips would be of help as you make up your mind. Take care and have a nice day.
Cheers.

xXxMikesWifeyxXx,
Basically, you will need to ensure and really know in detail the specifications of your hardware that the new laptop you are considering i.e. CPU, speed, RAM, HDD and etc.. Compare it with the minimum requirements for working with the new Operating Systems i.e. Vista or Windows 7.
In brief, don't get yourself caught with obsoletes. You may want to visit CNet to get yourself educated and informed.
Cheers.

I am not savvy enough to specify specs etc...But I would recommend a laptop.
I have an old desk top in my office and when I upgraded to a laptop my life literally changed. I do writing from home and I was spending countless hours in the office away from my family. Now I can even sit outside and write while my daughter is swimming in the pool or playing in the garden. I don't feel so guilty being away from her and she doesn't miss me so much. Good luck hope you find the right computer just for you without any hitches!

Hi there paula, I can deifantly see how the laptop changed your life. that must have been horrible to have to stay away from your fam all them hours... Im glad you got your laptop..
I myself though, I dont work in an office and i dont even need a computer for what I do... Im buying my computer and it will sit right in my living room next to my daughters room.
I dont have papers or anything to ever type out or anything. i just need somthing that will hold my pictures and music and videos and me and my daughter can do fun things. like go to disney.com and all thoes others pbs and stuff. but also to chat online and mabey to learn some advanced html.. Im mostly online when she has her nap time or when she is in bed. so i dont have to worry really about missing time with her.
But what made me change my mind was 2 things. from buying a laptop..One of course i couldnt find a good one in my price range. but what made me feel better baout not getting a laptop is,if i did get one... i can take it all around with me and because of that id probally be on it alot more then i am with my desktop... so i did go with a desk top and i believe i did get a good deal. I am soooo excited....
But yes, If I were in your situation in having the old computer at the office and missing alot of family time.. i WOULD have DEFIANTLY went with the laptop...... thanks so much for responding:)

Well my husband is the better one to answer this question for you but he's not here at the moment. If you are just getting a computer for emails and surfing the net then you dont need anything big. (ram, processor, video card). But if you are a big gamer like my husband is then the bigger the better. Most games that you buy now need lots of ram and a big processor. My husband has a dual core processor and 2 gigs of ram.

Before deciding the specification, what is the purpose of computer you are going to buy? If you are going to use for some applications, those application will have the basic requirements. If you are going to use for surfing and writing some documents, the basic configuration is enough. If you want to use at home as well as out side, buy laptop, otherwise buy desktop. My best wishes.

If you're looking for the specs of a laptop, I'm going to suggest this site that gave me a Best Response:
http://tinyurl.com/2en9wq
However, if you're conscious about the price of laptops, there's now a new, low-cost version of laptops called the Netbook. These cost very little money, around $200 to $500. There are many types of netbooks such as the Asus Eee PC, the HP Mini, the MSI Wind, the brand-new Sony Vaio P that just debuted in Japan, and the one I got on 11/1/2008: the Acer Aspire One. These work like laptops and notebooks, but with reduced features, and on some of them you can choose an OS like Windows XP or Linux.
The Acer Aspire One that I purchased at Wal-Mart cost about $350 dollars, and now they're selling them for $298. CRAP!!!
But still, netbooks are good if you want to do some word processing and internet browsing though. Just don't expect to do a lot from them.

Hey DuoMaxwell:)
Thanks much for the link.... You know i did actually look at the acer's mini laptops. they are just way to small for me. and the things i wanna do on my computer probaslly is way to much for one of thoes. so i did skip thoes.. because i wanna do things like, download games, and music and videos, possibly a few movies, do some photoshop plus browse the web and have all my messengers and so forth so ill defiantly be going with a regualr computer...
Thats cool though that you foind somthing that would really work for you... yours probally cost the 350$ because they had just like come out in somke places. and now that they have been around just alittle bit longer they have went down in price.. the acer mini's didnt have good rating either.. only like a 3 star so that could be another reason....
thanks so much for taking the timr to send me that link and respond to my discussion:)!

If you have the budget, buy a laptop because it would be convenient to bring it and you can enjoy surfing the net even when you are in the mall or whereever there is a wi-fi. if you buy a laptop, make sure that it's pentium 4 and the capacity is big. have a nice day.

That's great that you are thinking of buying a new computer but you have to ask yourself a very important question: what am I going to be using the computer for? You don't want to spend a fortune on something that you are not really going to use. I'm talking in terms of power and graphics. I'm pleased with my own computer, I've had it for many years and it gives me what I want! I'm not into gaming so my computer specifications are limited. In relation to whether you should buy a desktop or a laptop I would say buy a desktop. I have a desktop myself and there are reasons why I will always choose a desktop over a laptop. When it comes to upgrading it is far easier to upgrade a desktop whereas a laptop has minimal upgrade capability. Also, a laptop that has the same specifications as a desktop tends to be far more expensive. These are the things you want to focus on when purchasing a computer. You want to make sure that it has enough RAM, probably 2 to 4 GB nowadays. Also, if you buy a desktop, there's every possibility that you will keep the system for a number of years and you will be able to upgrade it at some point, something I recommend you do with the changing technology. Anyway, I'm just going on and on, sorry! The most important thing is, don't let the sales guy try and sell you a top of the range computer that will have lots of things that you may not use. Go for an average system, they're relatively cheap nowadays. Good luck. Andrew

Hey Andrew!!:) Thanks so much for your responce and your advice. BELIEVE ME,you could have kept "going on and on" i would have minded,,, i need to learn these things especially if im spending all my money on it haha. BUT i did learn some good facts from you. For instance upgrading laptops. I know absolutly NOTHING about laptops, only the fact that they cannot handle the wear and tear like a desktop can... and that i dont have the money to deal with that haha... so i am glad that you brang this to my attention.
I am not really into gaming either BUT i do like to donwload games from like yahoo or pogo so that would be a must. I need sound, i wanna download music, movies, possibly watch some tv on my computer, photoshop, have all my messengers and all my pictures so i figure im ganna need a bigger system.. the one i am looking at now is a dell inspirion 530 sgb ram and i think a 2 processor.
dueo thingy thing.. all of that stuff i rely on my sister and her husband because again i dont know much about that...
i have this computer here, it was built for me. I paid 50 bucks for it... ive had it for 3 years and its still running LMAO....
My sounds has went out on it..and i cannot download my games. my video card i suppose it ancient... so im really excited to get a new computer.. trying now to rush it though ;) thanks so much for your thoughts....

I use several machines ranging from a P4 laptop 1.6 ghrz to A quad core Desktop which is a beast.
It all depends on what you are doing with it. Besides using computers professionally I do a lot of graphical stuff as a hobby, for that you need some heavy duty equipment.
If you're basically a typical surf the internet, watch youtube and email kind of user A system doesn't have to be that big. I wouldn't buy a new one for that, but upgrade the existing one(Unless it's a PII *LOL*). Adding extra RAM memory would be my advice. In fact if you do have a realy old PC I'd consider buying one second hand like from ebay.
But if you are going to use it as a home entertainemnt set I'd reccomend at least a dual core machine with some proper graphical and sound card(No onboard stuff)
I guess after having written the above I need not point out that I like computers, now do I? :-)

I have a computer that was built for me about 3 years ago.. its been running fairly well. though i have lost the sound in it the last year or so and my video card is crap. i cannot download a game off pogo like diner dash and play a full screen game.. it says somthing baout my somthing or another doesnt support somthing or another haha..
I wont say i know much about computer. but witht hoes right there id say i need a new computer. i have try'd replacing the sound card and got nothing.. i dont think i can live without sound much longer though...
Also reading your responce. the graphics you talk about. do you make your own graphics?... like using advanced html and all the crap? thats somthing ive been wanting to learn how to do for the longest. so thats another thing to add to the list that my computer should beable to do...lol
