Do you find AntiVirus programs useful? Do you think we really need them? Which ones do you recommend if you think so? Is the one you use free?

Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 - If you want absolute and utter control over every 1 and 0 that enters and exits your computer, Kaspersky is the app for you. I honestly don't think you can get any more secure than with Kaspersky locking down your system, but it was overkill even for me, and I had trouble convincing it not to remove some applications I knew were OK and actually wanted on my PC. Kaspersky is a hungry shredder with no reverse button (and it's on the slow side, too). $80. (Anti-virus only is $60.) I put NOD32 in this category; it's very similar in operation but can be heavy-handed.

I have been using AVG free for years. I have heard that Antivir is good and might be better, but I believe that might be only subjective. I tried it but I am so used to AVG I went back to it. If you want a pay version I have heard good things about Kaspersky. I have probably saveed a couple of hundred dollars using free versions.
Yes you need them unless you do not go on the internet or exchange emails or put in a pen drive or even add new programs. Then you do not need them. Otherwise you will be his with something sooner or later and you need an updated antivirus to hopefully save your computer from being disabled or destroyed or turned into a zombie.
You can get away with checking an online antivirus and running it, like Trend's Housecall. It does a good job, but your do not have the resident shield on your system checking in the background.

I use Kaspersky and I LOVE it! It's not heavy unlike McAfee and Norton. A lot of anti-viruses are quite heavy and slows down your computer. The one that I have, Kaspersky, is quite light and does the job better.

No worries, I had to research online for it before getting it. I hated norton as well as McAfee. And I did use both. Ages your computer like it was last decade's technology.

Anti-virus programs are useful and for the most part, are necessary. If you are knowledgeable, experienced user, you CAN get away without one (not recommended) but would need other types of protection such as browser add-ins and/or extensions to be safe. This is because viruses can force their way onto your computer whereas a long time ago, the only way a virus could get on your computer was if you ran it.
Most people will install an anti-virus program of some sort on their computer. Beginners will typically get Norton or McAfee because it is pre-installed on their computer. They usually pay for the program or if additional security is required, people will pay. More experienced (or more frugal) users will look for free options. I used to use Avast from Alwil Software (www.avast.com) but now use Antivir from Avira (www.avira.com) on my personal computer (both free versions) and NOD32 from Eset (www.eset.com) at work (paid).
You can look at this website to see some comparisons of the most popular commercially available anti-virus software and make your own decision:
http://www.av-comparatives.org/seiten/ergebnisse_2008_11.php
Keep in mind that they only test the paid version of all the anti-virus programs as a lot of companies offer free versions. I hope this helps!

Nope, I don't work in the field! It's just a hobby. Computers are something that I've always been interested in using but never really for a job. I'm not an expert by any means but perhaps just a little more knowledgeable than some and happy to share it with others. I'm just glad that I was able to give you some useful information. Keep on myLotting!

I have used many types of antivirus and from my personal experience i can advise you to for kasperasky internet security2009,main advantage of it is its detection capacity and healing capabilities, kasperasky mainly disinfect all viruses ,but other virus just deletes the infected files so you will face problems.

I think avira antivir is the best antivirus. It also has a guard to protect from infected pen drives. It also protects from virus infected sites. It also has latest definitions from the internet. It also scans the pc very fast including the zip files. It can be downloaded free of cost from the internet.

I used Kaspersky Internet Security. Its the best antivirus program I got although its not free. If its free antivirus programs I would prefer either AVG, Avast or Avira.

They are very useful, they are necessary and I use AVG Free edition. I sometimes use Norton, but I don't think it's as good. AVG detects a lot of viruses and has a nice format to it.
As for recommending, well, AVG, but I've heard some good things about Avira and Avast.
