mental illness?

I don't think all mental illness is real. I think the mentally ill people are actually extremely gifted, intelligent people. I don't understand why we drug them so heavily to dull their creativity. It is not a disorder to be unusually creative. Some minds don't fit in with today's society, however, it is not those minds that created this society. The artists and poets have pulled us out of two dark ages, but, by no means have they created the boxes we are expected to live in today. Last I checked, we weren't supposed to think, that's why I joined this group!

Ringbearer- I have a mental illness and I'm not the least creative. What does that make me?

And I'm not on meds- just got a tattoo of my totem animal which seemed to make a difference. I'm hoping to get my other 2 totem animals tatted and then I'll be fixed....hopefully. I hate being depressed all the time

alharra, do you play an instrument or get into any art? I would really recommend getting into this as it is an outlet for your brain. A place where you can go and nobody else can, they can only interpet. Music is my therapy. Sometimes after playing my guitar, I can barely walk because I gave all my energy to the notes. It usually takes me a few minutes after really playing to collect myself. It feels good to know you have created something that invokes feeling in someone else. Do you have any hobbies or anything like that...somkething you enjoy doing? Also, pets and plants are sometimes helpful with depression provided you have the means to care for them. Try to be as positive as possible without setting unrealistic goals for yourself. But, if you put positive energy out there, it will come right back...and that's a fact!

I have a mother with severe mental problems (bipolar and schizophrenia). She can be a danger to herself and others if she's not on her meds. Even on the meds she is on now its not controlled completely. Yes, there are a lot of side effects to these meds but for most people being without them is not a good option.

I see some wrong thinking here. You are making the assumption that gifted and intelligent people need to be mentally ill. While there may be gifted persons that are mentally ill, there are gifted persons who are not mentally ill, and there are stupid persons who are mentally ill. You seem to think that all idiots are idiot savants which is not that common. For a lot of the mentally ill there is either damage to the brain or there is a chemical imbalance. This is the kind of thinking that creates the myth that all blind people are gifted musically, it ain't so.

In the case of my daughter who has ADHD. She is very creative gifted, and great at art, however when she is not on meds she can not focus, stop talking, or sit down long enough to create anything in her mind. When she is on meds she creates beautiful things and has very high grades. So in her case it is the opposite. She needs meds to allow her to express her creativity.

I'm with you, mimi. I have a grown daughter who was diagnosed with ADHD when she was 7 years old. Before her evaluation and treatment she was doing terrible in school, she had no friends and she gave me a hard time over everything at home. What broke my heart the most was when the Psychologist who evaluated her asked her to complete some sentences. In response to "When I grow up I want to be...", she said one word, "good". She tried so hard to be good but she couldn't and it wasn't her fault. Once she was on the correct dosage of meds we discovered that she was great at Math and creative writing, she made friends and, as I learned how to deal with her disorder, we had less problems at home. For instance, I couldn't tell her to clean her bedroom...she would get distracted and nothing would get done but, if I broke it down to individual steps and had her tell me when she was done so that I could give her the next step, she did fine.
