My Dog Won...................

My Hero Spunky - This dog is smarter than me! LOL

February 17, 2009 6:15pm CST
Today was a red letter day in my little town. The abandoned house and shed next door finally came down. At 6am this morning a huge John Deere watchamacallit, with a big toothy bucket on a huge bendy arm thingy, came rolling in from the back alley and began demolition. It woke up my dog. The dog woke up me.............. Between the 'reverse alarm', hydraulic hissing, breaking glass, snapping of broken walls, collapsing of roofs, screeching of metal on metal, the pounding of the earth when the bucket hit and the dogs frantic barking.......... Well you can imagine that my lovely dream of bananas and cream was rudely interrupted! It took all day for the house and shed to get cleared, the lilac bushes and willow trees to come out and the dog to calm down. She ran back and forth inside her dog run barking up a storm. I know loud noises bother her, but she was downright frantic. Especially when the bucket began pulling the lilac bushes away from the long side of her dog run. I stood in my side door and took pictures of the demo, but finally the dog's distress had me putting on my shoes and going out into the back yard. Spunky came right over to me and nearly scaled her fence to get to me. She then turned back to the corner of her on the demo side and barked at me to follow her. The little scrap of humanity that was driving the dump truck away from the site with the debris was yelling at me to control my rabid animal. Spunky rabid? Give me a break! But as the action had brought several neighbours out of their houses, I went into Spunky's run and over to her in the corner. And then I saw what her concern was. The hubs and I had brought several Sugar Maple Tress back from Ontario 2 summers ago and planted them around our property. They are not native to this province and we missed the colors of the leaves in the fall. Spunky had watched those trees closely all the way from the nursery in Ontario to the planting of them weeks later in our yard. She KNEW they meant a lot to us. And now one was in danger of being dragged roots first from the ground! No wonder she was upset. I signaled the driver of the watchamacallit, and he left the Maple Tree alone. If not for Spunky I would have lost one of the Maple Trees.......... Now the side lot is bare and hopefully this summer the hubs and I can finally build the Senior Housing fourplex that we have had planned for the town since we moved here. And Spunky has won her verbal war with the watchamacallit machine of death and destruction. She's gonna miss the shade from the lilac bushes though! LOL Are your pets smarter than you? Mine is. LOL Click the pic....

Yay Spunky! I hope that pretty girl got an extra treat today. And I hope she enjoys the new neighbors, even if she does miss the lilac bushes.

She gets to sleep with me tonight! LOL Can't get much better than that! ROFL She already knows the seniors that will be living in the housing the hubs and I are building, so no worries there. The seniors in our town can't maintain their homes anymore, so hubs and I have designed and will build self-contained units for them so they don't end up in old age homes in the city. We already have a waiting list as long as my arm! LOL And you can bet Spunky will get spoiled rotten by them! LOL

I'm glad Spunky saved your sugar aple tree. They are beautiful trees. She knew, like you said what they meant to you and the hubby. And they say dogs are stupid. This is a testimonial of the fact I've known all along that they are very smart little creatures. That man in the machine had no right o call her rabid, he was afterall tearing away at her shade and her beloved maple tree. Now come spring your hubby will need to put something else there to give her shade. lol As I am replying to this(and all friends posts from my email) I won't see the picture until I post this. I know Spunky is not smarterthan you Sparks but she is one smart little cookie. She knows what her mama wants and cares about.

She is beautiful with that long hair. You are so smart, a beautiful, very smart, and articulate lady. I will give Spunky her due, but dear she learned what she knows from her mommy and that is you. She is as equally smart as her mommy. She is a gift to you and a wonder that you could always depend on as she has proven in so many ways.

Once the fourplex goes up, she'll have her shade back. Until then I want to put a lean to on the side of her dog house for her to curl up under. She's going to need it. The Maple Tree is still to young to cast much shade yet.

Sadly, my mutt is not smarter than me, nor you, nor your dog. I spent a good half an hour untangling my mutt from a wire cable he found in the tree area that he likes to hide in. Poor dog! It's bad enough he wraps the rope he's tied up with around his legs to the point where he looks like a rodeo calf after the cowboy gets done roping it, but that wire cable was something else!

LOL. Spunky was like that as a puppy. Used to tangle up her lead something awful. She soon figured it out though. Give your puppers a chance and if he doesn't figure it out, send him here and Spunky will train him! LOL

The worst thing about leaving Ontario for other parts of the country was missing the Maples in fall. If one of the ones we brought here had been swept away I don't think the hubs would have forgiven me. And he thinks that Spunky is a pain! LOL Silly man.

Wow... you have a smart dog there, in Spunky, my friend. Where does he get that from? I think I might have a good idea!!! Seriously though... how lucky for you that he had your maple trees under his watchful eye. He knew the digger driver was encroaching on your property and was determined to see him off before he took away one of the trees you love. I hope you rewarded him with a treat for his services! Brightest Blessings, my dear friend.

Spunky had to share her RV space with those trees for so long the summer we brought them back from Ontario, she's like a mother to them. Last summer she would drag the hose over to them if the hubs didn't water them often enough! LOL And yes, she got her treats! LOL

I would have asked if I could have the lilac bushes rather than see them lost forever. Then I would have planted them on my property. Yes, Spunky is a smart pup. He saved a tree. Trees are very important to dogs. Give Spunky an extra helping of food for being a tree hero.

I didn't expect them to 'plow out' all the bushes and trees, just tear down the house and shed. I guess they figured, do it all while they could....... I'm going to miss those lilacs. They were a mix of lavender, white and deep purple!

My Spunky barks so seldom that I know it's important when she does. I just couldn't hear her over the machinery. It was her running back and forth along the fence that alerted me to something being wrong. Good thing I was looking outside when she was! LOL

Dogs are smart. And it looks like you have a great one! Why did they dig up the lilac bushes if they were next to your fence? Sounds like someone who didn't know what he was supposed to remove - just clear the entire spot! Glad he didn't get your trees! You need to give your dog a special treat!

Spunky's run is on the far left edge of our backyard and her fence runs along the property line. The lilac bushes were on the other lot and ran along the property line too and needed to be cleared for future building. The maple tree was just this side of the lilacs and could very easily have been swept away with them, and good old Spunks wasn't having any of that! LOL Yep, she got a special treat.

Hey sparks! That Spunky is such a smarty dog! I hope you gave her something really special for saving your tree! And I do hope that you will replace those lilac bushes with something to help give her shade because she is such a good watch dog and she deserves to be kept cool in the hot summer sun! She is definitely a beautiful doggy! And she even saved your life too, don't forget that when you were stuck in the snow! You better treat that sweet doggy really good! She is really very special and she loves her Mom alot!

Oh Sparky...thou art luckyeth to haveth such an animal...uhh...eth! Alas, my dog - is...a moron. When we take him out he forgets to poop. Rather, he enjoys slapping his front paws atop a basketball and pulling it close while retreating on his hind legs and pushing forward again - effectively engaging a two step...when he gets bored with this he licks the ball and barks at it as if to ask, "that all you got?" But we kick it down to the very back end of the yard and the "floor," once again, becomes a scene from Saturday Night Fever. Why you can almost here little Nigel shriek, ala John Travolta in a thick Brooklyn accent, "eh...watch the haih!" Then all of a sudden it occurs to him that he may have forgotten something...so he leaves his number one partner behind, and proceeds to take care of number two. Oh and that's only the tip of his dopey iceberg!

Wow, I have to say that your dog has me baffled. I wish that my dog was that smart. I mean he's not dumb, he barks to be let out and all that but next to your dog, he's a matt,LOL. I cann't believe that your dog actually saved the trees, I am glad that you have someone looking out for you over there, I love my dog. I joke and say that instead of a watch dog, I have an alarm dog. He lets me know when anyone gets close to the house, car or children. I think that pets are a wonderful blessing and I hope you have yours for many years to come. Good luck with the Senior Housing, I hope you guys get everything set up the way you like it, I am sure that there will be plenty of greatful people.

Spunky had to share her space in the RV with those trees the summer we brought them back from Ontario. They were about 15 feet tall already and we laid them down in the RV and they went from front to back. I used to pet the leaves every morning and at night and Spunky took to guarding them whenever we took them out and stood them up when we stopped for the night. By the time we got home and planted them, she had become very attached to them! LOL We planted one right at the corner of her dog run and that's the one she was so concerned about when the track hoe started clearing the lilac bushes that ran along side her run. It will be a few years before it fills out enough to give her much shade though.

Sparky I have had one animal that was smarter than my kids and hubs, but she didn't even try with me, (I was her favorite, LOL). Her name was ChiChi and she was a spoiled baby, she passed away last year at the ripe old age of 13 in doggy yrs, 91 in human. Broke my heart in two. Now I just have devious 4 legged kid's, they all know how to play me, esp my African Grey,(But she is 2 legged), she calls me like she is calling one of the other animals, whistles and says, "Come on Baby, Rub, want rub!" "Want treat, come on Baby". Now how can you say no to that, she has a large vocabulary and learns easily. She is the smartest of the crew of 2 dogs, 2 cats, a lion's head bunny, sand crab and Cleatis my Beta fish,(of course he has no legs) who bumps his nose to the glass in the fish bowl to get my attention, he loves for me to talk to him, and his bowl sits right beside me on my end table. Now add all these with my 2 legged brats, and put your imagination to work...what a family, never a dull moment. Hugs Marilyn

I helped you pick those out. I almost cried as I was reading this. OH NO! The backhoe almost pulled out the new trees you got when you were here! ARGHHHH! Thank goodness for Spunky! Yep, she is a GREAT companion. Brilliant! Now you gave her a big HUGE HUG for that one, didn't you? WHEW! That was a close one. OOOOO! I woulda saved the Lilacs, too. But they are very resilient. If you replant them right away, they will be fine, you know. Get the backhoe driver to rip another few holes for ya and put some back in where you want them. Rabid dog, pffft! Yeah, right. I think Spunky is smarter than the backhoe operator was. *Annie walks off mumbling about letting just ANY IDIOT drive a machine*

Remember the Tower Oak we got too? She's grew over 4 feet last summer and produced the tiniest acorns I've ever seen. No probs about the lilacs. Spunky's run fence ran right along this side of them and in the spring there will be shoots from them coming up inside the dog run and we'll be able to start new plants from those as you can't transplant in the winter anyway.......... And don't WE know about idiot's driving big machines? ROFL See my next discussion about idiots DIRECTING the drivers.........................LOL
