I have not slept properly for a couple of nights. I had nightmares that woke me screaming last night (and woke my husband too. I was so scared, he had to hold me till the goosebumps went away and I stopped trembling.)
I suppose I should go to sleep before I have a psychotic episode or something, but I don't want to have the same dreams again. It was rough.

I have not tried that. I had the notion that god communicates through dreams, but I just wasn't understanding the message.

O.k I am the expert of bad dreams because basically every single night I have one. I have learned over the years the cause of my bad dreams. Firstly I have a condition similar to Bipolar except I have psychosis as well. When I am poorly I tend to find that I have more bad dreams. What you say about God giving you bad dreams I disagree. The God I know, Jesus would not do that although the enemy may try to give you bad dreams or influence them in some way. I used to love horror films, but have had to stop watching them as I found that they affected me and I would have bad dreams because of them. When I am more stressed or particularly worried about something I have bad dreams. If there is something in my life that I am worried about or afraid about then it might play on my mind at the time I go to bed then I have a bad dream about it.
My experience with bad dreams is that my husband has to wake me because I am screaming. When he wakes me I do not know where I am or even who I am until a few minutes after. I remember most of my dreams even the bad ones in fact, probably the bad ones more. Certain dreams have a meaning and rather than being supernatural in origin they are our minds trying to work things out through our dreams. Our minds are complex and a lot goes on that we do not see.
Be careful what you watch on the television and I once heard the last thing you think about before going to sleep at night is the last thing you will dream of. Rather than going to be worried have a nice relaxing bath, a warm drink and try to relax. I have found playing games really help to get me to sleep. So I will go through the alphabet making up girls names with each letter and I soon drift off to sleep or you can try the classic counting sheep which doesn't work for me. Finally certain medications can trigger vivid dreams. I don't know wether you were being serious when you said about having a psychotic episode. Some people joke about mental illness to me it is a reality. However due to the medication that I am on I do have these dreams and have had to accept that is part of my life. Sometimes I do not want to sleep because of the bad dreams, but we all have to sleep and there are ways of helping your condition. If you do have mental illness it might have to do with the medication you are on. I am on Venlafaxine and Quetiapine.

I understand how you feel, I used to have nightmares a lot. You're upset about something, which is why you're having these bad dreams. Tomorrow start writing down everything you're worried about then write down everything that's great in your life. This will help! I did it and it really reduced my nightmares. Dreams are your mind's way of expressing yourself when you don't do so in your waking life.

tell yourself that it is just a stupid dream. dreams are surreal and can sometimes come out as actually happening when it reality it will never happen. and dreams are symbolic of something else. so, i think in order to sleep better, go to a dream interpretation site and try to figure out what the dreams really mean, what the symbols stand for. and u will probably sleep better that night, knowing what it is trying to tell u.
