This morning I was researching food additives and I came across a book called Eat This, Not That. It’s a book that helps you to make healthy food choices. The results are pretty surprising. You can do a google search under that name and there’s even video’s about it. They have one book that is for choices in the grocery store, one for choices at restaurants and one for choices for kids foods. I’m planning to get all three.
It also got me to thinking about things though…like what the healthiest food is and believe it or not I couldn’t think of a single filling healthy food. Some will say salad but lettuce has no nutritional value. The best I could think of was Jell-O with fresh fruit in it. I’d also say that grilled chicken is your healthiest meat.
My favorite dish is pizza but I also know that too much of it can really pack on the pounds.
So, what would you say is the healthiest food you can think of? Is your favorite dish healthy?

The healthiest food that I can think of are fruits and vegetables and also nuts. Meat is not a healthy choice. They are are full of cholesterol that will make you sick in the long run. Meat could not be digested easily and can cause something bad in your system. While fruits and vegetables are full of fibers that will help clean your body system. They are full of vitamins and minerals that would make us strong and healthy. It will make our immune system strong to fight diseases. That is why I choose fruits and vegetables.

Thst is not true, I eat as much meat as I do veggies and fruits, it is the carbs that drive up your cholesterol value.

Hi Twoey,
Its always a good idea to take notice of what we put into our bodies when we eat and thinking about what we feed our children is vital for their future health and food choices.
But....there is a danger that people get wrapped up into the debate of what is or is not a healthy food.
Is Lettuce healthy? I dont think so. It doesnt have any nutritional value and doesnt add to our daily amounts of protein or starch. So why eat it? Well, its because it compliments other things.....and it gives us the IDEA of eating healthily.
You say you love pizza. So do I. And I think it is an extremly healthy food. What makes you think it isnt?
A homemade pizza with homemade tomato sauce and lashings of healthy toppings is an extremely nutritious and filling healthy meal.
We must not get confused about beneficial carbs....such as potato, pasta and rice. Each one is VERY healthy and very very very filling.
Pasta must be about the healthiest food that there is. Where people get confused is the added sauces which can hold a lot of calories.....but remember to make everything fresh and stay away from too many cream sauces. But a tomato based sauce with chicken, fish or pork is delicious.
When you said in your post that you cannot think of a single filling healthy food I was a little taken aback!
Do you not get full with porridge oats? Or bananas? How about a lucious tropical fruit cocktail with oat cookies? Chicken stir fry?.....I could go on and on and they are all so healthy!
The simplest thing to do for anyone who is wanting to feed their family well is to find out exactly what 'healthy' is and what a human body needs every day to be well.
The best rule to work to always is......"Everying but in moderation"

Well even though they are low-fat pizza and lasagna and spaghetti which are favorites of mine they still will pack on the pounds if you eat to much of it. I enjoy a nice grilled piece of chicken that's been marinated in Kraft zesty Italian, with a nice salad, with a few fresh steamed baby carrots and maybe some snow peas.

My favorite low cal dinner is grilled chicken (on my George Foreman grill) and a sweet potato either boiled or baked. Then either a small green salad or green veggie. I find that not eating large portions is what keeps me at my ideal weight.

I have a large George Foreman grill, I will bring it and come to dinner. I usually nuke my sweet potato, and if it is a big one I split it.

btw: Jello is made with pig skin or pig fat.
Healthy, but filling you ask?
Sweet Potatoes, white potatoes, meat, fish, chicken.....
Anything that is REAL and not out of a box, I would consider healthy.

Jell-o is made with gelatin, which is actually made from the boiled bones, skins and tendons of all sorts of animals

The healthiest thing I can think of that I actually LIKE eating is fresh veggies dipped in low-cal dressing. Yeah, it's considered a snack or side-dish but, for me, it's a meal in itself! (I'm not a big eater.)
My all-time, favorite meal is lasagna with meat. None of that veggie lasagna for me! BUT, it can be made with whole-wheat noodles, ground turkey instead of beef and low-calorie cheeses.
Okay, I know it's still not the healthiest thing one can eat but it's sure nice to have once in awhile! I've lost 25 pounds recently and never once thought of myself as "dieting". I just changed the way I eat. When I'm full and there's one or two more bites left on the plate, I won't eat them. I stop eating when I've had enough. I'll put those one or two bites into the fridge or hand them to my husband... he eats everything!

I like peas and pearl onions. I believe that is the healthiest dish out of all the things I eat.
Oh and I agree, grilled chicken is healthier out of all the meats.

All natural Peanut butter with celery or apples is a healthy choice. Now that you have me , I'm eating celery and pb. Roasted peanuts, sugar, palm oil, salt in that order is all that's in Skippy Natural and I've never tasted pb so good before now. Glad I chose it instead of the generic.

I never eat Jell-o because of gelatine (gelatin is icky meat by-product)
I eat vegetables, grains, nuts, fruits, tofu (and other soy based products). I signed up for an online newsletter that has an "eat this not that" quiz quite frequently and most of the time I get it right. I like doing the quizzes but I feel like I'm at a disadvantage with it though, because I don't eat most of the stuff I'm trying to choose from, so I just pick based on articles I've read.
I like pizza too - green pepper, mushroom, tomato, onion, olives
Yummy!

Hi twoey,,I have to say that I am not a healthy eater even though I have diabetes. I am also overweight due to hypothyroidism..I have a terrible time trying to lose weight even when I go on a diet..I don't know if I can say that I have a favorite food..I like most of the ones they say are bad for you, cheeseburgers, pizza, spaghetti,
etc, although I very seldom eat them. I live alone and I don't do much cooking. I mostly eat eggs, cereal, soups, and sandwiches. Have a good night.

You are so right about the produce,Jill. Sometimes I buy the ready made salads at Walmart. There is so much too them that I don't eat it all at one time and then i never finish it and it ruins so I have to throw it away.I don't like doing that so I quit buying them..I"m not one to eat salads very often. It's the same when I buy lettuce and tomatoes.

Sounds like an interesting book. I don't think there is a single healthiest food because you have to eat a variety of foods in the right amount and mix for optimum nutrition.

There are tons of healthy filling foods. Most unpressed grains and beans are very healthy and keep you full. Quinona isn't really a grain, but it is served as one and it's very healthy. Things like millet, barley, teft, lentils are all yummy and filling. Brown or red rive is great. I love red rice. It has a nutty flavor.
Iceberg lettuce doesn't have nutritional value, but other lettuces do. All fruits and vegetables are good for you. I make salad with 3 or 4 cucumbers a few tomatoes onions and romaine lettuce. It's yummy and full of vitamins.

Hello Twoey,
This is a terrific discussion topic. While I would otherwise love to contribute, as long as MyLot supports the irresponsible notion that it is reasonable for one person to judge another person’s views, beliefs, opinion, photographs, as either “useful” or useless, then I remain ‘in protest’. I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Haven't seen the book, but have seen some two-page spreads/excerpts of the book in a magazine (maybe Men's Health? I think the book started as a regular feature in the magazine).
Some of their recommendations seemed a bit odd to me, but most of them do indeed have less fat, calories, etc. than the regular choices people might tend to buy.
RE: lettuce: iceberg lettuce has little nutritional value, but other types of lettuce do. And even iceberg lettuce has water and fiber in it, which can help make you feel full and eat less food.

Most of the foods I eat are healthy. I do like my fast foods too, but even then, I have found the healthier ones.
Lettuce contains trace elements that our bodies need, provides us with extra fluids and adds roughage to the digestive system to help keep things moving along better.
Pizza made the right way shouldn't make you put on weight. I'm hoping to learn how to make my own because it would be a nice treat at lunch time because I'm bored with sandwiches all the time.
A complete meal that is healthy is sushi. The sushi rolls you can get are filling, packed with all good things and the seaweed is very good for blood pressue and other health problems. Oh no, now I want some! lol.

My favorite dish is Pizza. So probably not the healthiest choice. I do like a fresh baby spinach salad with tomatoes. Top it with a bit of balsamic dressing and off I go. Blueberries and spinach top the top 5 SUPER foods. I'd have to look up the other three. I can never remember all of them.

I want to eat better too twoey68. It seems that is hard to do sometimes and I will be the first to tell you to eat more fruits and veggies it cost a lot more the store. TO me this is a shame I want to eat better but it seems like I cannot afford too. I make more efforts to buy fruits and veggies lately and it has put a strain on my food budget nevertheless I am still on a mission to exercise more and eat better. Thanks for sharing the book idea and happy mylotting to you as well.

I go for the vegetables and fruits. Where it can make ypour life
longer, away from risks, sm,oother skin and energetic its because
of the nutrients we have from it. We are away from any diseases if we
try to do this lifestyle in daily basis. My favorite dish is mixed
vegies with meat little so tasteful and yummy to eat.
