Do you have a nice day after the supermarket clerk tells you to?

Supermarket clerks are always telling us to have a nice day. Has this ever caused you to actually have a nice day?

On the contrary, it really annoys me when a shop assistant or person at the supermarket checkout says "Have a nice day".
I live in the UK and this is an american phrase, so it has no reason to be used here.
Do not misunderstand, I mean no disrespect for the United States and if I was ever fortunate enough to visit I would expect to hear the phrase, but as an englishman I expect my fellow countrymen to speak english.

Is "Have a nice day" not english? it doesn't sound like french, german, or spanish to me...so what exactly do grocery clerks say over there?

Ahh, HA, HA, HA!!!! That one makes me laugh...cause no I don't!! I'm actually having a better day BEFORE I go to the store. Then with having the kids along and then all the boogers that are at the store, then traffic...should I go on? I would definitely say no I don't!!

LMAO!! Right! And how my oldest runs around EVERYWHERE!! We actually heard an announcement once stating that parents needed to keep an eye on their children and to stop letting them run around!! My husband and I looked at each other and then looked at my oldest son and thought they were talking about us. It was actually pretty funny!!

Very valid point...shopping with the kids is definitely an adventure..."I want this" "Get me that", "No Mikey, that soda tower is not a good hideout"....lol

I always take it as a 'wish' rather than as a 'command', but I hate it! I believe that McDonalds staff in the UK are now trained NOT to say it!It's usually delivered with an obvious air of 'I couldn't give a**** what kind of day you have, you sucker' and an over-bright smile.
It usually makes me think I could have had a better one if I hadn't encountered that particular bimbo!

What a great question! No, it has never changed the way my day is or will be. I do believe though that it is a courtesy to tell someone to have a nice day, and in this day and age, when courtesy is not as common, I feel it is a nice touch to still have some, even if it is just from the grocery store clerk. LOL

No, I usually don't but this discussion made me think of today. I was having lunch with my hubby and son and there was a mildly retarded man sitting behind us. This place is small and cramped. So I heard this man say to another " oh excuse me am I in your way" and the man responded in disgust " well you're not since you moved" My heart was breaking and I so wanted to slap that guy. I bit my tongue and when they left I discussed with my husband how mean and disrespectful that was. Alright the end of the story is, as I got up to leave that disabled gentleman looked up at me with the brightest smile I have ever seen and said " you have a nice day" and I almost cried. Sappy, I know but I did make it a point to have a nice day.

It might not affect me because it's so common now that it doesn't really mean anything.
But if they told me to have a horrible day, it might affect me.

Supermarket clerks do tell me to have a nice day, and I say "you too." However, I don't believe that they really mean it, so I assume they don't believe I really mean it. Whether someone wishes me a good day or not has nothing to do with the day that I have. Now, if someone says somnething like "have a fantastic day" or "have an amazing day," then I might pay a bit more attention. It's all about the effort behind it.
