I've had a couple of them and I love them. I feel like a million bucks after having one but I recieved a warning from the therapist that I thought was very interesting. She told me that a lot of people get flu like symptoms after having one if they don't drink alot of water. She says that toxins build up on the nerve endings around your spine and when she "pops"them they are released into your systom to be disposed off. If you don't drink alot of water to help flush them out then you will get flu symptoms. How weird is that? Have you ever had a professional massage? Did you get flu like symptoms afterwards?

Your welcome Sunil. I thought it very strange. I have never had any symptoms but I do know someone who felt bad for about a week afterwards. It may depend on the amount of water you drink and how much of these toxins you've got built up. If you get alot of massages..you may not have any. Thanks for the response and be sure to ask you massage therapist.

I have never had a professional massage. Fortunately a local community college is offering massages for a minimal fee so that their students can practice. I am going to have to check them out. It would seem to make sense that you would need to flush out the toxins with water though. We are suppose to drink plenty of water on a daily basis anyway. I will keep that in mind. Thank you for telling us this.

No, I have never had a professional massage. And this is my first time knowing about getting flu like symptoms from not drinking a lot of water after a massage. I hate having the flu. It is the pitts! I have been desiring to have a professional massage for the longest. And I still want one. I am glad that you informed us about this. If it is true, we all have to make sure that we drink a lot of water. I have had the flu last month, and I don't plan on getting it again anytime soon..

I have a few deep tissue massages. They hurt so bad, but feel so good after afew days. I get extremely sore in the areas that he found were hurting me and then after afew days of using a heating pad, I feel amazing.

That does sound very strange. My wife was given one as a pre-valentines day present. I arranged for a good friend of ours who is in that field as a profession to give her a 1 hour massage. She did not get any flu symptoms afterwards though. She already drinks a lot of water, so that may be the very reason already, that she doesn't get ill.
I've had a couple of 10 minute massages myself, when I used to drink a lot less water at the time, I don't remember getting ill or cold like symptoms afterwards. But mine massages were with clothes on, and my wifes were with hers off. So I'm not sure if the clothing had anything to do with it.

hello jenintn
nope i cannot say that i have ever had a professional massage like that before. and i didn't know that a person could feel like that they were getting the flu afterwards either. my mother-in-law a couple of years ago, had a professional massage like that done to her, and she said that same thing as you did, that she felt just absolutely wonderful after that she had her massage. one of her relatives is really well off, and she had the professional massage person to come over to the beach house in Gulf Shores to have everybody that was there that day a massage. must be nice to be well off like that. thanks so much for letting us all know around here at Mylot that if we ever decide to go get a professional massage like that that it might make us feel like we are getting the flu afterwards.
take care and have a beautiful day today!

I had a professional massage only once. It is very good to have a massage. It is very nice when a pretty woman bends over you and massages you with affection. HOwever, it is not so easy to get hold of good masseurs.

That's true Frederick. That's why I go to a health facility and not just any massage parlor. I went to just a random one once and the lady was really good at it but she talked the whole time. The next one was not so great but was silent. A friend I know that works at a gym told me about the place I go now. It's really nice.

Unfortunately, I had no occasion to have a professional full body massage from a profressional. I do hope that if one goes for it, he/she would feel very rejuvenated and relaxed after the massage. However, when I go to my barber to get my hair cut, I do request him to give me a good head massage with 'oil' and when he works out on my head, with his dexterous hands, I enjoy the sensations in my head and my body and slips into a temporary sleep sitting on the chair, till the message gets over............LOL!

I am kind of a professional masseur myself because I know a number of great massage techniques. One thing I used to do was Chi Nei Tsang which is a Tibetan massage which targets the internal organs. It's great for relieving tension. Cheers!!!

I had a professional food massage couple of times, well, I am not a regular taker of this massage but I had a injury on my foot, so went for it. And wonderfully my food improved dramatically after I did massage. Another few times I went for Foot Refexology massage, (in singapore massage shops are like pubs in UK, they every where). and I found why that massage is so popular. a 40 min massage will make you very much relaxed. This should be safer to, dont think anything is there on food which can bust etc. But the claim of flew seems strange and I haven't heard about it. May be you can do some internet search. If somebody says it causes flew they must provide the proof for that.

Yes, I have had a professional massage a few times. I have had a relaxing massage and health exhilarating body massage which I attended 10 times in 3 weeks. It was a massage course. Every time after a massage I felt great like flying, all my tiredness was off my shoulders. I never felt any fly symptoms afterwards, it's a first time I hear about something like this.

I thought it strange too. I never had any symptoms but I did drink alot of water because I was afraid. If you go alot all your toxins may already be released. Or maybe if you already drink alot of water. I don't know but it's interesting.

I love massages. I am half way on my path to becoming a registered massage therapist. 1 year left.
As there is many different forms of massage, the effects are different.
You can get "flu-like symptoms" after having a lymphatic massage. This helps increase lymph flow. Increased flow helps remove harmful substances fromthe tissues and increaes immune function.
As with most massages it is essential to drink lots of water afterwards to flush away the toxins that have been released. You don't have to guzzle glass after glass but make sure you have at least a cup of water afterwards.
A simple rule we have been taught is take your weight and divide it in half and that is how many ounces of water you should drink a day. There is 8 ounces in every cup.

Good for you and thanks for the professional input! It is nice to hear these things from a professional. Alot of people don't know about thise and it's nice to be informed. I'll have to remember that body weight water ratio and try and practice that. Thanks again for the response.

Healthwise i don't think the time frame matters. The massage therapist will have a routine for each time frame. If you have only one once in a while a believe an hour massage is more beneficial but if you go more frequently then 30 mins will do the same as you will have less toxins built up.
As for the type of massage it varies. Firstly on your preference, some people can not tolerate to deep of a massage.
A deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down the adhesions that can block circulation and cause pain and limit movement and inflammation. The RMT often uses direct deep pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscle. Conditions that Deep tissue massage can be used for are Chronic pain, limited movement, recovering from injuries, repetitive strain injury (carpal tunnel) postural problems, arthritis pain, fibromyalgia, muscle tension or spasms. Deep tissue massage is not for people who have open woundes, skin infections, right after surgery, chemo or radiation (unless recommended by doctor) People prone to blood clots, pregnant (unless recommended by doctor) and only done by someone certified in pregnancy massage, and should not be done directly over bruises, unhealed wounds hernias or recent fractures or breaks.
A relaxation massage is a smooth rhythmic style that promotes general relaxation, improves circulation and range of movement and tension of the muslces. Its main function is to relax you. This can also be called a Swedish massage.
A relaxation massage can shorten the recovery time of a muscular strain by flushing the toxins and lactic acid, and other wastes from the tissues. It increase circulation without adding to the hearts workload. It can stretch ligaments and tendons and stimulate skin and nervous system and soothe your nerves. It helps to reduce stress. Precautions with blood clots, post surgery, pregnancy, open wounds must be considered and should consult with a doctor.
This is my personal suggestion but it is best to talk with you Massage therapist who will know you and your body. If you do not have an injury or chronic pain the a relaxation massage is more then likely the best option for you. You can talk with your RMT to incoporate deeper pressure into the routine.
Make sure you communicate with your RMT, if something is uncomfortable or painful to much pressure make sure you tell them, everyone is different.
I hope this helps, I am trying to condense some of the notes to give a general idea of each. There are differing opinions on how many types of massage there are.

I've had a few professional massages, mainly because my girlfriend loves them and I've happened to be around when she's gone in for one, so why not get one as well? Right?
Eh, wrong. At least, for me anyway. for whatever reason, the masseuse usually ends up telling me (in the few moments that I am relaxed) that they've never touched anyone with such a negligible amount of built up stress, and the only tension in me is the overwhelming anxiety that comes from being manhandled.
Interesting news about the toxins though, makes a certain amount of sense, hmm, I'll have to mention it to my girlfriend.
