do you have an experience that your computer is infected by viruses and you could not resolve them so you have to reinstall your windows? i have a lot of experience that i have reinstall my windows because the viruses, if i calculate it, it's not less than 5 times. based on my experiences i always make a back up file to keep my files from deleted. this is why i dislike a windows system because it is very easy to infected with viruses and we have to install an antivirus to resolve them, but if we have an antivirus our computer is going to slow and i hate if my computer is slow. So how many times you reinstall your windows?

I have reinstalled windows xp quite a few times (perhaps as many as three) in the past 5 years, but now i am very careful about sites that I visit and software that I download so I rarely get viruses. I have Norton and Spybot installed on my PC and my PC is still quite fast....i would rather have a slightly slower pc and know that I am safe from malicious software than to have a fast pc and be vulnerable to viruses and spyware. Happy mylotting!

I have never reformatted and reinstalled my windows XP and have had it for about 4 or 5 years now. I keep away from viruses if I can and have an updated my anti-virus regularly. Use the free AVG, it will not slow your computer down like McAfee or Norton.
I did get a bunch of stuff on my system once but I post on a board where they help people with security/virus problems. They never failed yet to clean up people's computers and they cleaned mine. I could not have done it myself, these seem to be the experts on the subject, all for free, they are very nice people to do this for everyone.
I got some extra RAM so I will have the max 2 gig as I now only have 500 K and I find it runs out of RAM frequently. Sometime in the next few weeks I will install it and hope to have a speed boost.

There's no need to reinstall windows as far as i am concerned. Because i am using linux, which has now changed a lot with a userfriendly interface and a safe and secure computing environment as ever. There's no virus in the dictionary of linux. Just give it a try. Install along with windows and experience a virus free environment.

oh you use Linux operating system, so that's not windows. of course you don't have to reinstall your windows because you don't have one, is linux have the same interface like windows?

I've never had to reinstall my OS because of any virus problems. I keep an updated McAfee antivirus and a few good anti-spyware systems running to keep them in check.
But i did transfer my PC often and the latest one came with Vista. So i had to uninstall it and reinstall XP and Vista.
Happy mylotting.

i have reinstalled my windows a total of 4 times. and like you i always make a backup of my files so it will be easier to customize my settings. i even have to copy the exact fonts, sizes and colors of everything i got so used to. in as much as i want to shift to mac, i think it is still not yet time. but when the world is ready for it, i will definitely get one.. and still maintain my windows.. lol

You may not believe, I have reinstalled my OS 13 times in the past 5 months. First time because of virus we happened to reinstall the OS. As I was just the basic user of computer amd mechanical engineer, I did not have any idea of these things.so we called some other friend to install the OS. Due to my careless visits of many websites, our computer became the vitim of virus very often. Then I started learning the installation of OS with the help of my friend. Then I practiced the OS installation 3 or 4 times. Now I am able to do many things in the computer and doing networking course. If my computer is attacked by virus now, I will never care about that. Just it is matter of 3 or 4 hours to install OS and other softwares. Thanks to virus, because of that only i learned all in computer. Now I am concentrating the hardware parts of the computers.

Nice question. Brings back memories of frustration and hours of troubleshooting experience. I Try to solve the problem without formatting but at certain cases things really mess up and theres no way out except re-installing windows or other OS.
So lets see.....
I almost always have to re-install windows once in every 6 months.
I cant always blame it on virus, sometimes I do my dangerous experiments with system files and registry and find that I've really busted my OS. And then the one way out part comes in. So I always keep backup of my files and never save any documents in OS partition. I always keep drivers copied in my HDD and optical discs.

I have seen in general when we keep on using the computer, the operating system starts to slow down because of a lot of unnecessary files and many other things. So I generally prefer to format my computer after every five or six months so that my performance does not degrade by the huge amount. I have quite a few heavy applications installed on my computer and so if I don't get the optimum performance it irritates me. Moreover in the computer is not working fast enough then the whole process gets slowed down and it makes things even worst. So generallyeye to format my computer after every five or six months interval so that I get the optimum performance from my computer.

Wish me further luck! my current laptop I haven't done any windows reinstallation for the past two years. But with my desktop before I've done it about 4 times due to virus infection. I have to pay someone to do it for me 'coz I hate to make further mistakes. The very last time, I just dumped my desktop and purchase this laptop.

if we have a laptop, we have to keep the original windows so if we have a problem with the operating system we have to try very hard to resolve it because if we reinstall the operating system it very difficult to get the original os

I have reinstalled my operating system for many times, at least fifteen times more. I have backed up my windows with "ghost" which can easily restore my system to a healthy state. This is a very powerful application. I use it when my computer has serious problems such as virus infection, system core files lost and many others which cause the system to slow and collapse. I always had the impulse to reinstall windows when I was a computer novice. Now, I has become more patient with computer problems and never easily got the idea of formatting my pc. Sometimes we can search out some solutions on the Internet.
