When I was a kid it was always cold foods for a sore throat, like Ice Cream and milk shakes and popsicles.
But one time I had a horrible sore throat, and someone gave me some hot chocolate, and immediatly my sore throat was better.
So since then I've relied on hot foods and drinks to help my sore throat.
I've had a sore throat for about 3 days now, and nothing hot or cold is helping it at all. Last night I had a bowl of hot chicken noodle soup, and it seemed to hurt my throat more. This morning I'm eating a large bowl of ice cream, and my throat is not feeling any relief!
It seems this time my throat is not going to be relieved until the sickness is gone!
What do you do for a sore throat?

I take strepsils, and hot lemon drinks with rum in it! There is also a spray that you can by which really works for a while. I spray before going to bed so that I can sleep. rub Vick's on the throat area and keep it warm. Rub Vick's on feet at night and this helps you to sleep and generally feel better in the morning. Take care and get well.

I've never heard of stresils, I don't have any tea in the house, and I don't have any sprays either. The only thing I have is the Vick's vapo rub! I don't have the car today either, but if it still hurts tomorrow I'll buy some tea while I'm doing my shopping.

Oh I think that Strepsils are British but they are sold out here. They are a very effective sore throat lozenge. I was talking about Vick's vapour rub. It is so good for you. Try it. Get well soon

I use the vaporub on the babies when they're congested, it works wonders! I remember when my youngst ws about 3 months old he had a nasty cold and had trouble breathing. I put a little of the vapo rub on the side of his bassinet, and within 10 minutes his breathing was fine and he was sleeping peacefully. I still won't put it directly on him, but I smear a little bit on the sheets of his crib near enough to his face that he can inhale the fumes.

I've heard of that being used for diarhea, but never for a sore throat. Too bad I don't have any in the house or else I'd try it.

Apple Cider Vinegar seems to be a remedy for loads of things! I do have some, but this says it kills "bacteria" on contact. Unfortunatly I don't think mine is caused by bacteria, and I was prescribed an antibiotic anyways. I'll still give it a shot, but I've also been gargling with mouthwash (kills bacteria) and salt water, neither seem to be doing the trick.
I've heard great things about tea with honey or lemon or both. Unfortunatly I have none of these things in my house, and don't have my car today! I'm just going to keep popping ibuprofen and pick up some tea tomorrow while I'm shopping if my pain isn't gone.

Lozenges if I'm not eating, especially if I'm trying to sleep. Soup helps if I'm eating...

See a doctor if your sore throat lasts longer than 5 days. If you can't identify an allergen that could be causing your sore throat, then it's time to see a doctor. Usually, sore throats that last 5 days or longer are caused by a bacterial infection like Strep throat or tonsillitis.
Drinking a lot of fluids will help you get rid of a sore throat. Sore throats are most often caused by post-nasal drip (doctor lingo for “snot sliding down your throat”) which is the result of a cold or the flu.
Gargling warm salt water can help relieve a sore throat. The swelling and subsequent in your throat, called edema, is caused by a greater water concentration in the cells lining your throat. A light mixture (1 teaspoon of salt per glass) of salt and water gargled for thirty seconds, several times a day will help draw some of that extra water out and reduce the swelling that accompanies a sore throat. Be careful; too much salt will harm your already beleaguered mucus glands.

I've already seen my doctor and was told it's pretty much just a viral bug. I just have to wait it out. I am doing the salt water gargling now and then, but it's offering no relief!

I know this is a strangeone but try, dry toast. My Dad told me one time to try dry toast for a sore throat.
He said that the roughness of the toast kind of sands away the infection. I don't know if it will work for you, but I have tried a few times and it always seemed to help the soreness of my throat.

That does sound strange. Normally I eat dry toast to settle and upset stomach, and I don't think I like the thought of the roughness sanding away my infection! Ouch!!

I know, I laughed at my Dad when he told me to try it, but I did try it when I was going crazy with a sore throat one night and I was very surprised when it worked.
I must try toast for an upset stomach as well now that you mention it.
Maybe be toast is a miracle that can cure a lot of ailments

My Primary Care Physician suggested that I mix equal parts of Benedryl and Malox. Then gargle with it. The Benedryl numbs the throat and the Malox is thick so it keep the benedryl on the throat. It worked wonders. Hope your sore throad feels better soon

I usually just take some sort of sore throat drops. I don't get sore throats very often. Last year I had one that was really bad and nothing I did seemed to help. I went to the doctor and it turned out I had an ear infection. The drainage was making my throat sore. They put me on some medicine and the sore throat stopped in the next day or so.

Both of my ears have been hurting as well, so I saw my doctor yesterday. He said the swelling in my throat is what was causing the ear pain. I don't have any infection, and it's pretty much just a nasty cold caused by a virus that nothing will help. He did give me antibiotics anyways, and I did start taking them. So far it's not helping, but I didn't expect it to considering it's a virus. I just have to wait it out.

There's a bug going around in my area that starts with a sore throat... a real bad sore throat. I had it a week and a half ago and my throat was so swollen, I could barely swallow food.
My husband went to a healthfood/organic foods store and found a small box of tea that included 4 packets for a couple different ailments. One of them was a "throat coat" and I have to say, that it worked wonders (and it smelled great too)
I used honey to sweeten the tea and no milk and the throat problem was already much better by the time I finally got a doctor's appointment.
If you can find a tea that contains licorice root, slippery elm bark, orangepeel, cinnamon, wild cherry bark, etc... buy it, that combo of herbs works so well for throat problems.

Thanks, I'll keep my eyes open for it. I've already had this problem a few days now. It appears to be getting a little bit better. I had a doctors appointment yesterday and was prescribed antibiotics, but they won't help because it's a viral infection.

I prefer warm things going on hot and definately nothing cold.
I get relief when my neck and throat are covered up too with a high necked jumper or a scarf. If it's open it seems to be worse but when it's covered it seems to sort of soothe it. Do you keep yours covered up and does it make a difference to you in any way?

No, I haven't tried covering my throat, but I did notice the other day when I pulled my blanket up around my neck that the warmth helped a little, so maybe I'll go hunt down a scarf and see how that works for me.

First of all you reduce taking cold foods like ice cream and milk shakes. I will tell you a remedy for sore throat. Put some salt in luke warm water and gargle it thrice a day. Hold the water in mouth for some time. You will get great relief doing so. You can drink some black coffee with some pepper powder and dried ginger powder in it. This also will help you to give relief. Even you can chew some cumin seeds for sore throat. Eating small onion also is good.

Hi katsmeow
First of all,you don't try with ice creams. It is not a medicine at all.
You keep doing salt warm water gargling every two hours or so as per your comfort.
Keep drinking lot of hot fluids such as hot water, tea, lemon tea, soup etc.
Don't smoke or be near to a smoker.
If your sore throat is by viral infection, then you will get relief by 3,4 days.
If your sore throat continues even after that also,it may be due to bacterial infection, for which you may need some antibiotics.
Please consult a doctor,if your pain is intolerable, some blood is seen in your saliva or sputum, some swallowing problems occurs.
Get well soon.
Happy mylotting

I like hot lemonade with honey in it. Both are antibacterial and the heat the citric acid help sooth on contact and kill the bacterial causing the sore throat. If you've had your sore throat for 3 days already it may take a while to clear it up, but I'd recommend drinking a cup of hot lemonade with honey ever 3 or 4 hours. Put a little garlic and red pepper in your chicken soup. It may burn going down, but those are also antibacterials and will help.

I feel bad that you are still sick! 2 of my kids and my husband have had that in the past week. I always buy popsicles or make them, I make jell-o, and load them up on Tylenol. I think for everyone here it is all sinus, causing them to have headaches and sore throats. My oldest came home from school today with the headache and sore throat. He wanted Chicken and Stars soup from Campbells....and Vernor's ginger ale. Those are what my mom gave me, so that's what mine get. Hope you feel better soon.

While cold liquids feel good on my throat for the moment, I've found warm works better to last longer. I use hot tea with honey and lemon to help my sore throats. But I also use spray chloraseptic if its a bad one.

I like to use hot, and I mean HOT items on my throat, almost as if I were burning away the part that hurts. Otherwise, I'll have something carbonated, usually seltzer, because the fizzing sensation feels nice on a sore throat. I used to use cold too, too try to numb away the pain, but I don't like it so much anymore. Mainly I use hot and fizz now. Good luck - feel better!
