Well, as I told my friends last night, my roomie is in the hospital. Well, we are scheduled to have a repair guy come today to fix the dishwasher. The other roomie and we have been keeping up the cleaning and she did the litter boxes and mopped on her days off.
We had planned on fixing a crock of chicken soup to help with the cat smell today, but that's normally the roomie's job - cooking I mean. So, this morning, I got up extra early, and started the soup. To start it, I first had to unload the dishwasher. (No, its not working, but we've been drying the dishes on the racks because that's the ONLY place we can do it with no cat help - we leave the door cracked so it has some air circulation.)
I took a rest after that, did some other cleaning in preperation to doing the boxes and just finished scooping the litter boxes.
I also cleaned the counter by the range. I have eaten breakfast, brought in the last bag of cat food and fed the beasts.
I am not at work, because I have to be here when the repair guy gets here, then I can go to work. He is supposed to be here by noon - but when I was calling in sick for the roomie - I got beeped and couldn't answer it so I hope it wasn't him.

You never mentioned why the one roomie was in the hospital. Curious/concerned minds wanna know. I hope that wasn't the repair man calling to tell you he couldn't make it. That would mean a full day of no work instead of just half day. Hope he gets there soon for you and roomie feeling better.

ahhhhhhhh ok..That gall bladder sure can cause alot of problems for something so little. Glad to hear the repairman is on his way. You'll be back to doing dishes the easy way soon enough now. I just sent up a prayer for an uneventful surgery and speedy recovery.

26???? Where do you put the litter boxes you do use??? I only have bedrooms or living rooms...my bathroom is too narrow and my loo is separate and my laundry is downstairs and outside. Luckily I live alone but I do have my daughter and her girls to stay sometimes and they would be offended to have a litter box in their room....so would I. How do you look after that many cats??? You probably have a really big house I guess.

Sounds like a lot of things are all happening at once. It is good you are staying busy. I hope your roomie recovers soon. So how was the chicken soup?? Did the repair man get the dishwasher going?? Did you ever get to go to work??

The repair guy came, but the parts weren't right, boy was he angry over that.
We went to see the roomie last night and then went and got some food at Mac Grill instead of the soup. So, I haven't tried it, will probably do that today.
Yes, got to work for about 4 and a half hours and got 90% of the stuff done, just didn't get one thing done, but because my feet were hurting, I didn't want to do that. Well, my feet do hurt a lot, so they were hurting more than normal because I'd done so much around the house first.

Hi ElicBxn.... First I want to tell ya, I'm not bragging but simply trying to help. As you know, I have 9 cats and 3 dogs. I've been complimented time and time again about how good my house smells and how one can't tell that we have any at all. I'm guessing because I use pine sol all the time to clean. I'm constantly cleaning something with it. I got a bottle of sp*c and span, used it up and now I mix pine sol and water in the bottle and use it to clean counter tops and floors. I love the carpet deodorizer called Pet Fresh. You leave it on your carpet for an hour or so and vacuum it up. Another thing is I use Arm & Hammer scoop litter for multi cats which is remarkable in keeping the smell down. I used the deodorizer too which is very strong so I mix it in with the litter so it won't bother the cats when they use the box. I also use packing tape to get all the cat hair off the furniture or use the vacuum cleaner to remove cat hair. I wash all my bed linens (everything) once a month. I use equate brand of lysol air freshener and/or febreeze to make it smell nice in the room which also kills the cat stinch.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you're dirty for I'm sure you're not but thought I'd try to help you with the smell. It takes almost constant cleaning. Hope I've helped you in some small way!!

Haus Frau I'm not. Cleaning is NOT my top priority. But I do put some time into it, and it wasn't really bad except that I figured the boxes needed delumping before the repair guy came. It was hard work, but I did it.
Honestly, I have a "numb" nose from Afrin abuse and I really know I have trouble smelling it, but I did work on the cleaning.
Last week we put in 2 hours each, all together 6 hours, cleaning. I did the boxes, the roomie did the counters and some cabinate fronts while I followed her and finished up. I also cleaned around the range and otherwise washed up.
I'm sure it still didn't smell great - but it wasn't anything like it had been and the cooking also helped.

It is days like this that you appreciate just being at work!! I hope that it wasn't him, either, although all service people who come to my house are told that they must call first as I babysit and sometimes cannot answer the door right away.

Don't worry if it beeped he knows someone is home. The phone wouldn't be busy all on it's own.
For making the house smell good, you can try boiling some cinnamon or vanilla in water or baking some frozen cinnamon rolls or some other good smelling frozen food item I say frozen because it's just so darn easy. Just throw it in the oven set the timer and the only thing left to do is take it out.

Very very true, cats
read the ingrediants, you will probably in there find corn starch or food starch of some kind (not specified) and that is more than likely corn starch - that's why I can't eat it
the roomie is diabetic so she shouldn't eat them
the other roomie is obsessed with staying thin so she won't eat them

I guess I'm lucky that I can eat almost anything. I love deserts. Yummm I'm supposed to be on a diet, but once in a while I'll eat sweets or processed foods. It must be hard if you can't eat everything.

Oh boy, that would be typical after all that work wouldn't it, my friend? I've been much the same for the past two weeks, having a new kitchen fitted. Every morning, I cleared the kitchen of anything that would get in their way, and every evening when they finished, I put it back in so that I could cook and eat. Then what happens? They don't show up for a couple of days... then they take a day out, doing something else. I get tired of all the hassle to be honest!
I hope your repair guy turned up after all the work you've done. Brightest Blessings, my friend.

Hey Elic...hope the roomy is doing ok in hospital...all the best to her.
You may be able to help me. I'm keeping my puss Banjo indoors these days and It's worrying me that the place is starting to smell like a cat's litterbox. I'm using a clumping litter that is supposed to reduce smell, but I have a sensitive nose and it has me worried. I know you have a couple or maybe even a few cats so can you tell me how to keep my home smelling nice.

the roomie is home - check the discussion the Good the Bad and the truly Ugly - and don't ask me, I know my house smells like cats, that's why we are cooking things that cover up the smell, and we only have 7 boxes going at the moment and cleaning those out nearly killed me.

Gee, it sounds like my house! I haven't used the dish washer for 8 years it isn't cost effective to use it for just one person, and like you're doing right now I am using it for a dish drainer. I will be pulling it out next month when I finally get to remodel my kitchen (Yes, I am excited. It'll be a lot of mess and work but it will be worth it.).
As for the cat box, that is a given that as soon as the repair person arrives the cat will hop in the box and dig a hole and leave the smelliest poop that it has EVER laid! It's like the cat is saving that one especially for company to enjoy! Then, if nothing else the dogs will decide to pass wind simultaneously. It's called give up... I do use scented litter and I invested in a litter maid so it isn't as big a job to clean the box. During the summer months the box is on the screened patio for the cats to use. As soon as the patio gets finished next month the box goes out there instead of the house. I don't know if you have heard of air ionizers, but it helps a lot with the cat smell if you have one close to the box. Also they don't use too much electricity and it really cleans the air! If you would like one, let me know...I know where you can get one really really cheap! They also are great for collecting the dust from the box too.
Right now I am really glad that I don't need to have repair people come by. I am refraining from doing too much house work because I know how dusty and dirty things will get from the remodel...plus I am snowed under with school work (Uh I did an eleven page test Tuesday night...it kind of gives you an idea of what college is like, or at least it refreshes your memory.) And of course I have the four kitty terrors plus four doggie terrors. I couldn't believe it when I sat down on the couch for lunch and one of the mini's pooped right beside me! I had to clean the couch too today. Then of course my sister's dog knows how to open the garbage can and she LOVES to sort the kitchen garbage...at night so when I get up in the morning I get to dodge cans and can lids to get to the bathroom. It's kind of like little kids, they can go to sleep and look sooooo innocent, yet during the time their up they can be so devious!!!I am glad that your repair person called. I am the lucky sort that has them promise to be at your home by noon and it ends up at noon six weeks from the fifth Sunday in the month of February.

I guess I kind of have to change my habits for the short time before the kitchen gets redone. I am used to just tossing the empty cans in the trash and not thinking about it. I can move the can container out to the patio for the time being. Trying to crate Abby, my sisters dog, would be like stuffing an elephant into a size 8 swim suit! If there was any other option I'd take it, but Abby's owners didn't do the best job of training her...so I'm trying to do it. Not that it is going to be kept up with as my sister acts as if Abby is her "baby" and doesn't reprimand and stand behind it. She'll tell the dog no or chew the dog out and then the next minute she'll hug the dog and love the daylights out of it. Talk about mixed messages!

A very dear loved one of mine told me about a product he bought to kill the dog urine smell he had in his house (he had an aging dog who couldn't hold his urine anymore) He said he went and got some stuff called ODOBAN they have a website but they also sell it at Walmart. I have animals as well and sometimes they have an accident in the house so I went down and bought some of this stuff and let me tell you it works great! Gets rid of the smell it does not just cover it up I love this stuff it will get rid of that male cat spray and the cat poo smell it's wonderful stuff and safe around animals.

Hopefully it wasn't the repairman beeping you, if it was, then you probably had to miss another day of work for him to come back again.

Well I hope that your roomie is feeling better soon and that you get your dishwasher fixed. I know what it is like to be without one and I have to say that it's not fun. I am a stay at home mother of two and between me and the girls and my husband, I have to do about 2 loads of dishes everyday, I have to say that if I had to do them by hand I would cry. I hope that all goes well and that you and your roomies get back to normal soon. Good luck.
