Standard vs Automatic

Do you prefer to drive a car with a manual transmission or an automatic one? Is there a particular benefit to one or the other? For me it's a standard hands down. There's something about shifting and knowing I control the car as it accelerates. Both my manual transmission cars have been 5 speed and while it requires a degree of patience (not to mention coordination) I wouldn't trade it for the world. I'm sure there are certain advantages to automatic transmissions but if you love to drive you have to love a standard!

i prefer driving an automatic vehicle. for me, it is easier since you only have two pedals to deal with, gas and brake. also, you already dont need coordination between gas/brake and clutch. but be carefull in using AT, always keep in mind that when you want to stop, just press BRAKE pedal otherwise you might get into an accident. this is the common mistake of those you is driving and AT vehicle

Well I have owned vehicles of both types, and I have to say that they both have their advantages. I have a physical handicap that has progressively gotten worse over the years, so I chose to purchase a truck that has an automatic transmission in it the last time I was shopping for a ride. I miss the excitement of shifting through the gears in my old truck that had a standard transmission though. Automatics have their advantages in heavier traffic. However, the are not generally a good choice if you plan to do a lot of heavy towing or hauling with your truck. Even trucks with automatic transmissions that have the so-called "Towing packages" can have trouble with transmission slippage when pulling a heavier trailer. This is one situation where a standard transmission has its advantages, however, if you are pulling the trailer in wet or muddy conditions, such as in a pasture or other wet area, it is very easy to cause the tires to spin when you are just starting to get the load moving if you are using a truck that has a standard transmission. From my experience, it is easier to start the load moving on wet or muddy terrain without spinning the tires on the truck if the truck has an automatic transmission. I worked on a farm when I was in high school, and we frequently had to go into pastures and other locations with livestock trailers or other trailers loaded with heavy items. There were two Chevrolet 1500 trucks that we used on the farm as work trucks. Ironically, the trucks were virtually identical except for the fact that one had a standard 5-speed transmission, and the other had an automatic transmission. We used both to pull the livestock trailers and other trailer we had to use, and the fields and pastures that we went into were often wet and muddy, or the grass in the pastures was often wet from rain. This is where I began to notice how much easier the tires on the truck with the standard transmission would spin on the wet terrain, and how much more they would spin in comparison to the way the tires on the truck with the automatic transmission would spin. MOST of the time, the the truck with the automatic transmission would have an easier time starting off moving the heavy loads than the truck with the standard transmission did when the areas were wet. It was often possible to get the load moving using the automatic transmission with little or no tire spinning at all...

Wow, I've never thought about how a transmission would affect my ability to tow something. Right now my car is too small for that but if I get a larger vehicle I might want to occasionally hook it up to one of those little trailers to drive to festivals and shows. You've given me something to think about.

It is important to buy enough truck to safely tow the loads you intend to use the vehicle to tow. The last thing you want to do is to buy a vehicle that is too small for the load, only to have to end up repairing the vehicle because the strain of the load caused damage to the truck. If you intend to use the truck to tow trailers or to haul things, you need to do some research about the weights and cargo limits on the trailers you will be towing, and then make sure to buy a truck that can handle the load. You can usually find the towing capacities of the vehicle on a metal plate that is mounted on the driver's door frame, or in the owner's manual that comes with the vehicle. You can also talk to the salespeople at the dealership, but be careful not to let them sell you MORE truck than you actually need. Company websites are also a good place for information about towing abilities of the vehicles they sell...

It sounds like you haven't mastered the use of the clutch. You have to put your foot on the accelerator a bit before you slowly start to lift your foot off the clutch. The other thing is to be sure you put the car in neutral at stoplights before you lift your foot off the clutch. That's another thing that will cause the engine to kill.

There really is nothing like the feeling of shifting the gears and controlling the car yourself, is there?

^_^ Howdy!.... Canellita!....
I preferred automatic driving on SUV or AUV. On a regular or small or sport car, manual are good but I still like automatic on them.
Automatic can easily handle climbing on slopped roads especially in a long traffic queue.
I'm not really a driver but I can drive well and I'm not need for speedy. I just want a smooth, nice and easy comfortable ride.
^_^ Thanks!.... and Enjoy!.... myLot!....

Driving up an incline is definitely challenging with a manual car if you're not used to it and realize you need to shift down. (I had similar problems with my mountain bicycle.) I've gotten better at it though and fortunately my car has pretty good pick up so it climbs well. Driving is something I enjoy very much though there are times where I am not in the mood. Thanks for participating.

I drive a standard. My last three cars have been a five speed. It is what I have driven the majority of my life. The first new car I bought right off the car lot was a standard, and I didn't even drive it off the lot. Someone had to teach me to drive it. Thank Goodness I learned pretty easy. The only time that I find it to be a pain in the rear is in traffic, otherwise, I don't even think about it and just automatically shift.
There are several benefits one being usually better gas mileage as well as transmissions generally don't go out on them. The clutch will usually need replaceed but that is cheaper than a transmission to replace.
And the most hidden agenda for me to drive a stick, I don't have to hear my daughters asking me to drive my car!

No one in my family currently drives standard so that is a plus for me also! I got my car at the thrift store and the reverse was different from my previous car so as I was about to drive away someone came running out to make sure I knew how to find it (over to the left and up). I think on my last car it was down and to the right. Good thing he thought to come and tell me or I would have pulled into the parking lot at the insurance place (which was across the river -- this was the year after the storm) and been unable to drive back and seriously stuck! I get great mileage though with today's gas prices it doesn't seem like it. Thanks!

I don't care if its manual transmission or automatic transmission. I like them both.
Most cars I have owned has been with manual transmission - and it's the thing to go for if your car stops ... you can't push a car to start if it's not manual.
The best car we've had - the one that had the best effect from the motor was acuallt a car with an automatic transmission.
For city driving automatic is great, I don't like to drive at all - it's more a thing I must do.
Manual transmission is way cheaper to change if it breaks as well :-)

You know, I thought about the push start aspect when I started the discussion. There was a time I was having trouble with my car and was able to push start and make it home. With an automatic I would have had to call someone to come and see about it or get a tow truck. Either of those options would have meant spending money and would have taken up more time. Thanks for your repsonse.

I have to admit that in serious gridlock it can be rather tedious to have to shift up and down repeatedly. A manual transmission is not for those who are impatient or in a hurry. Dealing with traffic can be quite frustrating and you have to be able to almost commune with your car to not get frustrated even further. Thanks for your input.
