How often do you visit the dentists?

I know that check-ups should be done at least twice a year and a minimum of once a year. I am guilty of going to have my teeth checked much less often than this. Luckily though my teeth are still in good condition (my dentist told me!). Do you guys have regular check-ups?

As a former dental assistant, I should tell you that even though your teeth may be in good shape now, early decay can be invisible to you. It can start between your teeth where only x rays can detect it. Decay can move rapidly and therefore you really should be seeing your dentist more often. More importantly, more teeth are lost to gum disease than to decay. Gum disease occurs from a buildup of tartar around your teeth at the gumline. This is why a dentist or hygienist must use scaling instruments to remove this. A buildup of tartar will cause your gums to recede and become infected. Gum recession and infection can lead to sensitivity in teeth and ultimately bone loss around your teeth. See your dentist 2 times a year.

UK_Shree, As for me, I am currently doing it once a year as I am quite alright orally. In the past, it used to be twice a year until 4 years ago when my dentist gave me the clear bill and that I do not have much of a issue as far as my oral health is concerned. Although, I cannot say the same for the rest of my family members. Oral health is equally important and I have experience the woes when it is neglected. It is simply not pleasant and it took quite a while to get back into shape. So, I would advise everyone here that we should never neglect our oral health. Cheers.

I agree, I think many people do neglect their oral health though because it is just so easy to. And many people unfortunately only do something when it gets really bad. Thanks for posting

I would like to go twice a year but the economy is so bad. I'm overdue for a checkup and I will go because it's not saving money to ignore the teeth! I'll call this week for an appointment, I need a cleaning.

I know what you mean, but glad to see that you will get them checked out despite this struggling economic climate

hello uk_shree. i have braces in my teeth and as a part of this i hav to visit the dentist once in a month. i hate going there. before having these braces done i neaver used to go for a normal check up unless and until i have a problem with my teeth. but as i am facing trouble now, i recommend every one to visit the dentist atleast once in 16 months.

I am embarrassed to say but it has been close to 5 years now. My teeth seem to be in fine condition but I do not have the insurance to be able to afford a checkup. This really is not an excellent excuse b/c I have only not had insurance since last July. I NEED to go ...I know this.
@UK_Shree (3603)

Yes I would advise that you do go. Like you said 5 years is a long time. Just book the appointment, money will have little value if your teeth are in bad health. I know you said your teeth are healthy, but many health problems which are unrelated to teeth can be picked up during dental check-ups

I have such a hard time scheduling an appointment, what with my work appointments and commitments. I have rescheduled a check up and cleaning three times now. The dentist canceled Wednesday because his daughter was sick. I am getting some ongoing work done and we are getting that fit in.

It can be so hard to fit these things in to everything else. I have trouble fitting eye-tests into my busy schedule!!

I understand that we can all have healthy teeth by looking after them but I really feel it is important to have regular dental check ups to be on the safe side.

I understand. I think the maintanence of dental health is very expensive. Here in the UK we are required to pay a ridiculous amount of money for just having a 15 minute check-up!! I still think that it is important to have them checked out regularly though

It usually goes to about every eight months. Now I meet with him in May to have my top teeth extracted. Then I wait for a month,or until my mouth heals, and then I have a plate made. And start all over for the bottom ones. Fun, huh? Pays to take care of your teeth and mouth. I had no input from my family about taking care of them when I was young.

It's great that you make a concious effort with your teeth but after reading a response from somebody who used to be a dental nurse, I have realised that check-ups are so important to detect and maintain things that we are unable to look after ourselves

Hey don't be scared. Better to do it now than much later when things might get a lot worse than they are now

That's not too bad, just a year. Mine was much longer in between check-ups. I do look after my teeth otherwise though

My husband and I both visit the dentist at least twice a year. It's just easier to have maintenance done than have so many problems that you have to spend several visits just fixing them. I have never heard of someone enjoying a dental visit but we've found that a little preventive maintenance goes a long way.

Sounds like you are both very sensible. I think you are definitely doing the right thing, and like you said, prevention is better than cure
