We have 2 little dogs here. one chihuahua, mine and one pekingese, my sons. both fixed and girls but very jealous of each other altho they get along. these dogs will beg for and eat almost anything they see you eating. tonight, i was eating some watermelon chunks and here they came begging. i told them, i dont think you will like this and not even sure its good for you. i havent been able to find anything on some fruits on any of the sites. so i gave them a teeny tiny bit each. they swallowed without even caring what it is we have been trying to not give them any people food because they are both getting to fat. my son says they do this because of "rivalry'. each is afraid the other will get something the other dont. so do you have this problem with yours? and does anyone know if watermelon is bad for them? also, they already know they arent getting anything if we say "its chocolate" they walk away.

Dogs are dogs and will definitely eat anything you allow them to eat, but they should not be given anything and everything to eat. if you want to make them good watch dogs and keep them alert, you have got to under feed them and keep them hungry so that they are not lethargic.

That's just nasty. How would you like to be underfed so you didn't get lethargic. Feeding dogs properly, taking care of them and training them properly is what keeps dogs alert if they are guard dogs. My dog is here to keep me protected. She barks and scares people away, she does not need to attack anyone. She is awake and alert at the slightest noise and I assure you, she is not underfed.

yes i dont believe in underfeeding any thing. i cant stand it if something or someone is hungry i know they shouldnt eat to much but you should make sure they have enough. people used to say that about our cats. when we had rats once they said i fed the cats to much and they wouldnt catch them but that was not true. i had a cat that always got all she wanted to eat and she wiped out those rats in two nights. she didnt eat them just killed them.sad i know but its just not true about letting anything be hungry

Look under my profile as I started a discussion on foods, including fruits, that are poisonous for your dogs. If you cannot find it, I will find the link for you.

Yeah I never knew until recently that chocolate could kill a dog. Mine wants to get in our face cat included and try to get what they can. That is why they are outside especially if we eat. I haven't heard about watermelon hurting a animal but I have fed mine some before and even cantaloupe. I guess the worst that can happen is a upset belly and diarrhea.

Your dogs are really cute and interesting. And they have such cute, imploring eyes! Wonder whether I would be able to resist myself from giving them food if they come begging. Your son sounds right. They are just trying to get all the attention they could and being a bit jealous about each other. They may not care much about the food they eat. It's always better to monitor their food habits and give them regular exercise if they are getting fat. It's for their own good, you know. I don't think watermelon would harm them if they eat moderate amounts of it. I used to have a god who was fond of fruits.

Check out this site all over, it tells you what food not to give your friends but also what to look for around the place that could cause problems. You may be surprised the things that we take for granted which are toxic for dogs.

This came from a vet, for the last week i have been giving my dog a few grapes as treats after his insulin shot then i got this email about the grapes WEIRD HUH !! MY DOG MAX WILL EAT ANYTHING BUT A BANANA , HE SMALL LIKE YOURS HES A LHASA APSO. I READ THE OTHER DAY THAT A DOG GOT AHOLD OF SUGARLESS GUM AND THE CHEMICAL IN IT STOPPED HIS KIDNEYS. I FIGURE FRUIT SHOULD BE GOOD FOR HIM BUT LIKE THE DOG FOOD GUY SAID IF HE WAS WILD HE'S NOT GONNA GO STRAWBERRY PICKIN FOR FOOD. IM GIVIN HIM MELON ANYWAY, LOW SUGAR, AND ITS WET.

Talking about dog food and nutrition, for seedless watermelon it is OK and not too much, it can effect dog's digestive system. Actually, I have a friend of mine in Maryland and she is a qualified dog trainer. At YouTube you can search for "toflaki" when you have free time to watch how she trained dogs. She gave me this link about "Dog Food and Nutrition"; http://www.dogage.com/care/facts.aspx/FF/40

lol that is funny. It actually isn't bad for them, the watermelon. Our vet actually recommends celery and carrots for our dog as treats. Does seem like they are trying to one up the other. I guess its that leader of the pack thing.

Hi bunnybon7,
Why, don't like chocolate? I have two cats and one of the cat would eat anything, he even eats raw potatoes and the othe cat won't eat it but she will sit and wait when I have my dinner and she loves me to give her titbits from my plate and whe I say to them "All gone" they both go off to whereever they go. Love and hugs.

when i had my lab i had to teach him not to chew things he wasnt supposed to eat for his own good. but i thought once i could give him a big ham bone to chew. but when he chewed it in two i took it back. afraid it would not digest.

One of them. If it crinkles, he is your bosom companion. He will inhale it through your fingertips. By your face is preferable, but we're firm about that. If it involves any sort of food, he is so there. It's like he's starving. He's not, but he'll tell you he is.
I don't think watermelon would be bad for them. It's mostly water anyways. He adores strawberries. He stole some from his human just lately. Now he sits and literally drools when she's eating them. It's quite disgusting. He's never drooled before! Or since! Silly dog.

I have 3 chihuahuas and I know raisons and grapes even just one can kill a dog So checked it out and found the following:
If your dog has ingested any of these foods, get veterinary help immediately
Grapes and Raisins: Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs. As little as a single serving of raisins can kill a dog.
Apples, Cherries, Peaches and similar fruit: The seeds of these fruits contain cyanide, which is poisonous to dogs as well as humans. Unlike humans, dogs do not know to stop eating at the core/pit and easily ingest them.

LOL--never heard pets eating watermelon before. As far as "rivals"--oh, yeah! My Pyewacket is the real "ham" of the dwelling and vies for my attention any which way he can. He positively can't stand it if I pay attention to my other kitty, Kissy. If I'm talking to her, no matter where he is, he has to come charging out and pushes her out of the way to get my attention..he doesn't even like it when I talk on the phone and has to practically be right up at my face...not bad when I'm just talking to friends, but another matter when I'm doing a "business" type call..as far as begging for food...Pyewacket always like to "share" my breakfast with me...mmm..well, not share, mostly "steal" food from my plate..LOL

yes my coco is the more aggressive of the 2 dogs. thats also one of the things my son has tried to explain to Agra! they are babies and they will show their own personality and dont always understand if they are being greedy from the other dog. coco has had a tuff time giving up to the other dog, but shes getting there.

My Aussie Shepard Bongo Loves Carrots. Whenever I eat one I cut an inch or two off the fat end and toss it to him and just gobbles it up. It's good for his teeth and his breath.
I read today in an old Mother Earth News Magazine That someone was picking Tomato Hornworms off of their tomato plants and fed one to their dogs, now the dogs go searching for them on their own!

we have two chihuahua's and one is more of a eater then the other. They both are jealous of one another as well, and will pretty much anything except for their own dog food. They beg for food but are pretty good about going away when told they can't have it, they do come back though and beg again. I am not sure if watermelon is good for dogs or not but it is mostly made of water and as long as the seeds are not it then I don't think it will matter, then again don't just take my word for it!

Hey bunny! Who is that adorable little boy in the avatar? He is just
precious! You can check out the Humane Society site to see if
Watermelon is ok for dogs. I know that some fruits are definitely
off limits! Your son might be right about the rivalry between
them! I have heard that happens! Maybe you should try dog biscuits
instead! My cats don't like the same things. My cat Luna loves
ice cream and potato chips and my cat Star, his brother won't
touch either. So they don't have a rivalry over people food.
But, when it comes to their food they do!
