I am a big eater and since I quit smoking that only increased. Today I thought to write down everything I eat to see how much I am eating. I want to see if it is too much and where I can cut back. I plan to do this for a while to see the patterns.
Do you ever write down what you eat in a day? Do you find it helps?

CONGRATS! My sister is on the plan too. She just started a couple weeks ago. I wish you luck in reaching your goals too.

I do write down what I eat - the eating plan that I follow has an area on their message board for those following their plan to post what they eat. It not only makes me accountable, but it also is a good opportunity to receive feedback from others doing the same plan.

Yes, it IS a good idea. The plan I use is the Let's Do Lunch plan. If you'd like to check it out, go to http://www.letsdolunch.com

I keep track of what I eat all the time. I even use a webste to help me. You can go to sparkpeople.com and set up an account. You can track your foods, portions, ect. I use it because I had weight loss surgery and I need to make sure I am getting certain things in my diet on a daily basis. Instead of me adding it all up, it does it for me. I can even add in my exercise, to see where I am with that. It is cool, and I would excourage you to check it out!

It is a great thing to do, vicki. You will learn a lot about yourself and your habits.
I enjoy keeping journals of all types. I have kept food journals several times in my life for one reason or another. I always learned something.

That is great making pots. My sister is now doing it too. One thing that is shocking is how much I eat and how little she does. She is full with what she eats while I eat all that and I am still hungry. I hope to gain information from it too. Thanks

I have heard that this is a good idea, because it can be surprising how much we "snack" throughout the day, and often you can find places to cut back.
I find that I can never keep up a food diary for more than a few days. I also find that if I do start a diary, that I seem to make a special effort to eat well so that my diary looks good! It works for a few days, but then I just go back to my old eating habits and I'm back to square one.

Good points as I find I am trying to eat better today.
I used this method to quit smoking December 10th 2007 and it did help for that so I hope it works for this too. Thanks

Yes, I always write down what I eat in a day and I reflect on what I could have done better and accomplishments I have made. It has helped me out so much and I find that it helps me lose weight.

So, what was the outcome of your writing about eating materials for a day?
Exciting to hear about the result!
For me, I never thought that I would write down them(eat) in a diary. I don't see any need for that. Also I am not very good at writing diaries, so, I don't think I would do that in future too!

Good luck we are pulling for you. That seems like a good idea, writing it all down. I wonder if you could import that information into some kind of calorie counter so you could see what is the worst. Like you would not know a double chocolate cake is bad. You have to think it is a step that will help, I know when you are looking at your budget using Quicken you see how many times you stop for a coffee and how much you pay a month it becomes easier not to do it.

Thanks a lot. I also used this method to see my smoking habits before I quit. So I am hopeful this will give me a better understanding.

I have been doing this Challenge on Self.com and it really motivates me and keeps me motivated to stay in shape. It's a one month challenge and you record everything you eat for a month. I write down everything i eat and i enter it on my personal profile on Self.com and it calculates the calories, protein and everything you should know to help you to stay healthy. You can also record your workout and everything. You should check it out. It's very helpful!! Go to Self.com/challenge

I write down what I eat every day. Well minus the occasional weekend days that I'm just too busy to do so. I follow Weight Watchers so writing down your meals is a big part of the plan. I also find that it helps me think more about what exactly I'm eating and helps me decide whether or not I really need that "treat" or if I should eat a piece of fruit or something healthy.
No matter what weight loss plan you're following or if you're just cutting calories I recommend writing down what you eat. I truly think it helps!
