I have taken probally every allergy medication on the market. What kind do you take? Do you take it daily? Does it have side effects?

I've major allergies to foods so I have an epi-pen. I was on shots for a time, along with lots of allergy meds like Allegra D, etc. When I moved to Arizona things calmed down because of the change of weather, and since I've been in Minnesota I've had even fewer. Now I take just the occassional psedo (whatever the new name is they are calling it lol). I do a lot of natural remedies though and the one that helped me overcome my cat dander allergy was drops. I bought a homeopathic remedy from the herbal store that was a mix of cat, cattle, dog, dander-the most common dander allergy. I took the recommended starting dose under the tongue and increased until I had no symptoms. Today I live with a cat and haven't had an allergy attack in 3 years. Now interestingly enough, one of the serious medication allergies I have is to benedryll. Go figure huh. Anora

Most healthfood stores will carry them. Do you have any organic co-op stores near you? They may carry it. Anora

I have taken Allegra which is still by prescription only and had no side effects for me. I really liked it. Right now I take Zyrtec which doesn't work quite as well as Allegra but it is okay for now. I also take Singular which is a new medication for allergies that is prescription only, it hits another allergy pathway. It helps a lot. It makes about twice the difference as just taking Zyrtec by itself. I have horrible allergies (its about like having a cold all the time so much so that its hard to tell when I have a cold and when I have allergies) and I am always looking for a new way to combat them.

I just got it again, cause I finally got insurance that will cover it. Otherwise its like $100 a bottle and I can't afford that.

I take the benedryl capsule, no corn starch, but I take them for the fact that I can stay asleep all night most nights I take them more than the allergy effect - my allergist helped me with most of my allergies

yes I did, but my allergist taylored each person's shots to their needs, and didn't have "one dose fits all" that other allergiests seem to like

I don't normally take anything for allergies. Fortunately I only have seasonal allergies, and they are worse during the late summer days. If they get too bad, I just take benadryl (I'm not sure if I spelled that correctly). I take it because it usually knocks me out and I sleep really good with it! Other than that, I try not to take any medications.

I hate to take medications to. This is the time of year my allergies start to get really bad and I have been feeling it in the morning. My symptoms will last from now to May. So I am wondering what I should take this year.

I have been taking allergy medications since I was a kid. But that was a long time ago and steroids were not used then. The past years non-steroidal allergy medicines like Claritin and Zyrtec went out in the market and it has been proven effective and safe. Back then, I take them once a day for about 7 days. I have outgrown most of my allergies and it is those seasonal ones that affect me now. That means I usually get allergic rhinitis and the only medicine I take is Benadryl. I take them once a day for 3 days. Works for me though...and keeps me away from the doctor. Hope you get better and get over your allergies. I know how difficult it can be.

Because Rowan has food issues and we now carry an Epi-Pen as well as allergy meds, I can tell you what I've learned. Zyrtec doesn't have the drowsiness of Benadryal and it's 24 hours. Claritin is good but doesn't help with as many allergens. If you take the Zyrtec around bed time you won't feel any real effects because any that happen, you sleep through. My 19 month old is on it nightly.

I take Zyrtec and I like it because it has no sedating effect. As I have read you have been taking Singulair too. I take Zyrtec when it is needed but I believe if you are on Singulair you have to take it regularly to benifit from its effect. It is good for Allergic rhinitis. And it can help you with asthma if you have asthma too.
