we live next door to an elderly gentleman (say 65-70) and recently someone has been cleaning out his house, loudly. we haven't seen him in two days but we know he hasn't died. all the lights are on in his house and the doors are locked. someone has been tossing major amounts of paper, even put a trash can on the front entry. i want to call the authorities, just to have them check it out and make sure its legitimate but i feel weird, i think in the same situation, i'd be happy that my neighbors cared enough but still, i might be annoyed. what would you do?

Just out of my concern for my elderly neighbor I would call the police and have them check it out. The man might have gone out of town or even be in the hospital. There are people that will take advantage of people when they know the person won't be home for any given amount of time. Just to be on the safe side I'd call someone. I too would appreciate if anyone of my neighbors around me did that if they were concerned.

I'd tell them about the old man that lives there alone and that you haven't seen him in days or whatever. But that some people are over there doing stuff in his house...just say what you are feeling. They will send someone if they know the old man lives there alone and that you have not seen him lately. Yes, also tell them the people are being loud if you want to. This is what I'd do. Let me know if the man is okay. I'll worry about him until I know. I'm just that way...lol

yea i think i might have to suck up the potential embarrassment and just call. maybe say they are being loud or whatnot, the police wont say it was me who called anyways.

I agree. I would call the non-emergency number and ask them to go by and check on him. Maybe he's got someone helping him clean up - perhaps a family member came in from out of town. Either way, someone needs to check on him.

i wish i could see him is all, maybe ask him if he's okay, its just too weird with the timing and the secrecy, all the blinds are closed too.. too weird!

Well, if I were you I would call the authorities. Sometimes you have to trust your instinct.
