I think my dog is DEPRESSED!

My miniature schnauzer, Sunshine, had surgery last Friday. He had bladder stones that needed to be removed. The surgery went well and the poor thing has stitches internally and staples on the outside. It looks so painful. He is recovering well but I think he is depressed. He has to wear one of those cone shaped collars over his head so he won't mess with his incision area. The vet says it needs to stay dry & clean. I attached a picture of him wearing this thing. Does he look depressed to you? He sure is acting depressed. He hangs his head down low and either just sits there or stands in the middle of the floor most of the time and won't do anything. I guess he feels like he is being punished. I feel so bad.

Poor Sunshine. I hope he feels better soon and can get his pretty necklace off soon. Not sure if he is depressed or if he is just wanting sympathy. My dog is so funny, he will tear one of his dew claws at times and we have to put medicine on it along with some vet wrap and you would think that poor thing has just had major surgery, he will pout around, not walk much on that one leg but as soon as it is taken off he is back to his ole self.

Hi tyc415 - I've been keeping his "pretty necklace" off part of today to see how he does. So far so good. I will put it back on him when I'm not home though because I won't be able to keep an eye on him. Oh goodness, your poor doggy with his claws! Maybe he just likes the attention he gets when he has his foot wrapped up. ;)

I am so glad to hear that Sunshine seems to be doing better with the "necklace" off. I agree with you, I would put it back on if and when I was not there to watch him. Hopefully he won't have to wear it too much longer.
Oh when my daughter comes to visit she brings her two dogs and my dog gets so excited and after this last visit I told my husband that we should have thought and wrapped his leg to see if that would have calmed him down. hahahaha

Hi tyc415 - My poor baby still has to wear it because he was supposed to get his staples out yesterday but we had a big snow storm Sunday and everything was closed. My teenage son didn't have school & my husband's office was closed too. The vet clinic called to say they were closing and he could come in today to have them removed. However, I have no car today nor will I tomorrow either because we only have 1 car and my husband needs it tomorrow too because he has a meeting mid-day out of town. :( So, poor Sunshine has to wait until Thursday. I feel like a bad mommy.

Poor little guy. I think he is just not use to the collar, soon it will just seem like part of him. What you need to do is not allow your feelings to feed into him, you know dog do that they respond to the owners moods. So tell him wat a beaut full guy he is and just how happy you are to see him, pretty soon he'll forget all about this.

I guess so savypat. I hope he gets used to it soon because he just hates it! He isn't eating too much either. I try to take it off of him every now and then throughout the day so maybe he'll eat something. He has finally started eating a little bit of his dog food today. Before that he was barely eating... just some scraps from the table and some dog biscuits now and then. I'm glad he is finally eating something. :)

Well, he doesn't look very happy but would you be if you had to wear one of those things?! My dog reacted the same way. Talk to him a lot, hold him on your lap, give him lots of attention and tell him he's a good boy. He doesn't feel well, anesthesia makes animals feel icky long after we realize and he's probably sore, too.
When my dog (long ago) had to wear one of those cones, I told him how pretty he looked and made a big deal of what a cool thing the cone was. I'd stroke it and tell him he was a very good boy and looked so handsome! After a day of that, he perked up and didn't feel so bad. I kept up the reinforcement till I could take it off then presented him with a new collar and told him how pretty THAT looked! I could just see the wheels turning, him wondering why I didn't just get the darned collar and skip the cone!

Hi dragon - I've been telling Sunshine that he is such a good boy over & over again. He just hangs his head low and pouts. :( I have been giving him tons of lovin. He has a vet appt on Monday to get his staples removed so I sure hope he feels better after that and I'm sure he won't have to wear the stupid thingy on his head anymore either!

He probably is a little depressed. He has no idea why he is being restricted and has no way to figure it out. Not only that he is probably in some degree of pain. But he will heal and you can lavish him with affection and he will get over it. You know that this is for his own good so you will just have to stay strong for him.

Hi savak03 - I know... poor thing has no idea why he has this stupid thing on his head! Hopefully after he sees the vet again next Monday to have his staples removed he won't have to wear it anymore. He just loves his trips outside to go potty because I take it off of him. I will definitely lavish him with affection... I ALWAYS do! :)

I am not sure that depresion is what your dog is going through. He may just still not feel good. When people have surgery it takes time to feel like doing stuff. it is possible that he is still sore. He is very cute. I would just give him extra love and attention. It took both of our dogs about 2 weeks before they were back to normal after we had them fixed. I imagine it is about the same thing, plus he may feel funny wearing his new collar.
I'm sure that when those staples come out he will be back to normal

My dog had to wear that twice this year. It gets in the way of eating, drinking and playing. My kids called it a flower pot because it was round like a flower pot. Anyway, I don't know if my dog was depressed but he didn't like it much. He managed to get the second one off somehow.

First, Sunshine probably does not feel real energetic after the surgery. Second, that cone is kinda heavy. It is something Sunshine is not used to. Third, Sunshine does not know that the cone is only temporary.
I suggest you not let Sunshine see himself in the mirror right now. Saying lots of encouraging and loving words will be helpful. You can tell Sunshine that Gizmo had to wear that cone for awhile also. When he got to feeling better, he figured out how to do things with the cone. He could push his toys and balls around the house. When he would go outside to play in the snow, he figured out how to scoop the snow and throw it in the air at Lizzie. He really enjoyed throwing the snow. Lizzie would get so mad and run back in the house to pout.

I will certainly tell Sunshine that Gizmo had to wear one too. I've been giving him lots of lovin and telling him what a good boy he is. He has been gettin a little more active and not quite as depressed looking. Today I've kept it off of him for a little while so maybe he will eat some more. He ate a little but not enough yet. Maybe he will later. I will put it back on him when I have to go out for a few hours though just to be sure he doesn't pull his staples out or aggrevate the area.

He could be depressed. When does he go back for a checkup? Maybe he is just stressed out after the surgery. I'm sure that the cone is bothering him and that bugs him too. Maybe he just needs some loving.

My poor Sunshine boy was supposed to go back for his checkup & to get the staples removed yesterday. But, unfortunately for him, we had a big huge snow storm over the weekend and everything was closed yesterday, including his vet's office. :(
Now, he has to wait until Thursday because my husband & I only have one car and I can't get it again until then. :(

most animals who have to get the space collar seem depressed.and i can't say i blame them.
he'll probably kick out of it once it's off.
one of my past cats had to have one because he had a gigantic abcess from a neighbor's cat biting him.he had drainage hoses, and they slapped that on him to keep him from tearing them out.
the poor cat one day seemed depressed about it,and sat with his face down and the cone fully touching the floor.he looked so sad i just picked him up and held him.

if he has enough room in the cone-you might try a game i did with my cat
i put a bunch of little treats down in a circle on the floor, and he put his cone down over it and gobbled it up (we had 5 other cats-and they couldn't steal any by virtue of cone),he seemed to find it fun.

Hi scarlet_woman -
Your poor kitty... that is exactly what my dog does half the time too. He just sits there with his head down and the cone touching the floor like he lost his best friend. :( The poor thing even has to keep it on a few extra days because we had a snow storm this weekend & everything including his vet's office was closed yesterday. I could take him today but have no car to get there. I can't get our only car tomorrow because my husband has an out of town meeting with his boss. So, Sunshine will have to wait until Thursday to get his staples removed.
Hope you have a good day!

The poor thing! Of course he's depressed! Wakes up one morning, happy as a lark...except for that annoying pee problem. The day stars going downhill when mom doesn't give him breakfast, but instead brings him over to that awful smelly place where he always gets poked with needles. He doesn't know what's happened, but now he hurts inside and out on his bottom side, but doesn't remember how it happened. He's excited when mom brings him home, looking for to having everything like it supposed to be. Then to add insult to injury (literally), some one thinks it's a joke to dress him up like a satellite dish! He doesn't even like tv, and is probably hoping that no one thinks to mount him on the roof, 'cause he's afraid of heights. I've figured out the look on his face in your photo. He's doing the math on how many treats and how much pampering you're going to owe him...And he can't quite remember passed a LOT of mouthfuls.
Hope he recovers quickly, and enjoys a whole lot of good stuff to help him forget!

I also am not sure whether or not it completely is depression.
I think your dog feels out of place. I think he realizes something is different - "what is this giant thing on my head?" It might also be heavy and weird enough that he doesn't feel like moving his head. It may feel like a punishment for him, though. He's probably also in pain. My dog has had surgery as well, and she only wanted to lay down for a couple of days. She was antisocial! but a few days later, I got my Lucy back and all her personality.
Just give it time. If he wants to lay down, let him lay down on the most comfortable pillow you can find. And make sure he's drinking enough water. You could even have the radio on for him. That always used to calm my dogs down when something was wrong.

Hi seabeauty - He has a vet appointment this coming Monday to get his staples out. Thank goodness! I feel so bad for him. I'm sure he is still in pain eventhough he is becoming a little more active each day. Right now he is just sitting looking so depressed right next to my teenage son who is playing video games. He loves going outside to go potty because i take it off of him.

Is he on pain medication? When a dog I used to have had surgery, the medicine kind of made him seem out of it. Maybe that is the reason. Of course it has got to be depressed to be in that situation. I don't care what anyone else says, dogs have emotions. And a cone around the neck sounds miserable. Hopefully, he'll be better soon.

Yes, he was on pain meds Ambiepam but he took his last one yesterday morning. I'm sure he is still hurting a bit because his staples were supposed to come out yesterday. He wasn't able to get them out because of the vet's office, along with everything else, being closed yesterday due to the snow storm we got. I think we got about 8 inches or so! So, now, poor Sunshine has to wait until Thursday when I have the car again to get them out. :(

Poor Sunshine. He just doesn't understand. May feel better but can't understand why he has to wear that awful thing! Poor little guy. I feel for him! The things we have to do and can't explain to our babies!!! I am sure you are giving him lots of loving and affection and that will help him understand you have sympathy for him and aren't mad at him! Just like babies, wish we could communicate things to them. Feel so bad for them!

Poor doggie, he does not look very happy with his new headwear. When my male cat got neutered, one was put on him to keep him from licking his wound. Believe it or not, Jake loved the silly thing. When he no longer needed to wear it anymore, my husband took it off of him and just put it aside. One morning when we woke up, would you believe Jakie was wearing it, he somehow got it on himself, it was such a funny scene.
I hope your dog get better soon, and won't have to wear it anymore.

Oh my goodness sudalunts... that is soooo incredibly hilarious about your cat! I can't believe he got it back on himself! I sure hope you were able to get a picture of him. I bet cats looks really funny with it on. I have been keeping the collar off of Sunshine most of the day so far while I'm home. He has been licking at his wound some but right now he is just sleeping on the floor in the ray of the sun shining in. I figure a little cleansing licking won't hurt too much. I will just keep checking his wound every now and then to make sure it isn't getting irritated. Of course, when I have to leave the house in a little while I will put it back on just to be safe.

He just had surgery. He has stitches and staples in his groin area. I think I'd look a little sad too, but it might simply be he's uncomfortable. Imagine how you'd feel if that had happened to you. I've had a few surgeries. I looked sad too. But it was only the pain. Hopefull the vet gave you pain pills for your little baby.

You are so right mlh8087... I'm sure poor Sunshine boy is extremely uncomfortable with those staples & stitches "down there"! I can't imagine... OUCH! The vet did prescribe him pain pills but he can only have 1 pill once a day so I'm sure the pain relieving effects don't last all day. :( He is also taking antibiotics too. Luckily, on Monday he goes back to the vet's office to have the staples removed. The vet said that the stitches are the disolvable kind.
