Should you ignore your hunger?

I am one of those people who have gone on diets all my life and did it the wrong way when I was younger. Well, I tried my best to do away with my bad habits and now I am proud to say that I have lost 25 lbs doing it the healthy way: Through proper nutrition and exercise! But recently, I have noticed that I haven't been losing weight anymore. My weight has remained stable for a month despite a calorie deficit in my diet. So I decided to increase my exercise level. The problem is, when I increase my exercise level, I get hungry! I know that hunger shouldn't be ignored because it is your body's way of telling you that you need fuel. I don't want to have ulcers because it is so painful and I have experienced that before. So do you think that I'd still be successful if I increase my exercise and eat a bit more or it wouldn't make any difference at all?

If you are still hungry..just try an ounce of a lean protein...chicken or fish. If a 1/2 hour later you are still hungry then maybe you should add something.
Your body might be at a plateau. I am in weight watchers now and have not hit one yet...but I assume that it will happen. I will be thrilled when I hit a 25 pound weight loss..I am about 1/2 way there.

Ah Hah~~! You have hit what many people termed as the weight plateau!
You are doing the right thing to increase your exercise routine. But you must not ignore that hunger!
Cos when you do, you will just signal your body to conserve energy as it is not getting the energy it wants. And when the body does that, the metabolic rate will drop.
As you are already burning more energy, it is okay to eat a little more.
Just be mindful of what you eat and you can still keep the weight away and at the same time, lose a few more pounds.
Some of the food you can munch on whenever you feel the hunger pangs are Guava, Grapefruit, Beetroot and Broccoli.
Guava is especially good for snacking on during those odd hours where hunger pangs strike. OR when you feel the need to much on something cos the mouth is just itching to chew.
Broccoli is good cos it is considered a negative calorie food. It takes more energy to digest it than the energy it provides. As it is a vegetable, the fibre it has will also add bulk to your meals. Consider including more of this vege in your meals when you are planning them.
That two alone should help you to shave off a few pounds if you maintain your additional exercise routine.

I guess you should try to eat something and not totally ignore it. Eating smaller portions of food as often as you can can really curb your hunger and at the same time maintain your ideal weight and figure. As a diabetic and a overweight my doctor did not recommend to me to be eating too much but never ignore my hunger as well. he recommended that I eat 6 small portions of food the whole day. If I could do away with the 3 meals a day instead spread eating the regular three meals plus additional three smaller snacks in between them so that my stomach would not feel hungry.

It is not at all advicable to skip your food or ignoring your hunger. When even you are hungry try to take some light food( means light fat food). Or take in salads, juices or protine kind of things which wont increase your weight yet fills your hunger.

You should be comfortable at your own weight and being able to keep it stabelized.. very few people are able to do that.
My suggestion, don't ignore your hunger. Just eat small, more portions throughout the day and you shouldn't have a problem. Don't exercise more than your body allows you to because you will just get sick.
Go see a doctor for the best advice, and talk to him. He might send you to a dietician.

It's a really easy answer. The more you excercise the more calories you burn and since you have been eating right through proper nutrition your body's metabolism rate has increased, including your resting metabolism so you may be now burning more calories then what your intaking. What I suggest is eating more protein based items which are lean in fat and low in calories and having a few high protein snacks during the day. If your excercise routine is as vigorous as mine is, you might take a lesson from the body building world and eat more but smaller meals up to 4 times a day. Another thing is about your decrease in weight loss. It may not be as bad as you think. Remember if you are exercising your are building muscle and losing fat so the weight may be lost and gained proportionately. The thing to look at is your body fat measurement which most gyms and nutritionalist can measure for you. Then also it may be water weight built up in your cells. Weight loss at an athletic level is more based on a cellular maitenance. Look closely at your hydration levels and problem areas and just start focusing on those instead of your body as a whole. If would like a few suggestions about high protein, low fat and low calorie healthy items just contact me and I'll send you a link for products to look at.
Your friend,
Dave

I exercise a total of 1 1/2 hours a day. I am also suspecting that the reason why I haven't lost weight is because I haven't had my period and I get to have some water retention before that. I actually think that I am also lacking some protein recently. Thanks for reminding me! Happy mylotting!

I don't think that it is a good idea to starve yourself, because then you can't focus on the important things in your life. I think it is a better idea to focus on what you eat. If you want to lost wait or something, I think it may be a better idea to eat healthier food, and less junk food. I'm not saying to completely stop eating junk food and only healthy food, but I think it's more about finding a balance between the two. Focus more on the healthy, while still treating yourself once in a while. This certainly hasn't hurt anyone that I know of.

i think you need not starve to reduce your weight, there are many good foods which make you loose your weight. My sister is a doctor she advised her friends to take food which is high in proteins and drink more water this make the fat in the body to melt so that we can redice the weight.

you should never ignore your hunger. If you feel hungry you should at once take something to eat. If you are on some deiting and trying to lose weight then in that case you should not eat stomach full you should eat a bit. So that you can control your hunger but not that you are over eating.if you ignore your hunger you will invite some deseases to your body like you will feel weakness and you will not be able to stand even. And if you feel weak that can adversely effect your beauty too. Your charming face will become a dull one.so for a healthy living you shuold never ever ignore your hunger.

See I think our bodies adjust to whatever we do. So if you have decided that you want to ignore your hunger so you can decrease your calories then your body will adjust to that. Give yourself a few days or a week where you ignore the hunger. Eventually your body will get used to eating less calories and you will not get hungry. I think the best thing to do when you are hungry is to drink a glass of water or have some fresh juice or eat a fruit. Water and juices really fill you up. I know many people that drink two glasses of water before they start eating because it fills you up and you end up eating less. Or they drink two glasses in the morning because it makes you less hungry the rest of the day. To get to the second part of your question, exercising more cannot do much harm as long as you do not overdue yourself. Being a little bit breathless is Ok but too much means you are overdoing it. I think about 30 minutes to 1 hour everyday is plenty, more than that would be a bit much for someone who is just trying to stay fit. And, make sure you change your exercises every week or few weeks because once again the body will adjust and get used to the exercise and the body will stop reacting. So try different things and you will surely see results.

Thanks for your advice. I exercise a total of one and a half hour a day. But I don't do it at once. I do half an hour in the afternoon, then 1 hour at night. I would surely try different things because my routine has been the same for more than a month! Thanks again!

Decreasing your calorie intake too much only results in your body "shutting down" your metabolism to conserve calories. Eating enough of the right foods to eliminate hunger and cravings is essential to maintain or boost your metabolism.
I have been following the Let's Do Lunch plan for about two months now and it has been very successful in boosting my nearly non-existent metabolism. If you would like to check it out, go to http://www.letsdolunch.com

Hi there jaymeeliz! It is ok to increase your food intake when you are exercising. You need calories so you would have more energy to exercise. More exercise could make you lose weight by burning your stored fats. If you eat less your metabolism will slow down. Eat 5-6 times a day but make sure that the proportion of your meals are small. Your diet should be loaded with vegetables (mostly green leafy vegetables). If you want some more information about losing weight without getting hungry you can visit sparkpeople.com. I have lost 30 ponds since using the program in the site. Another thing, maybe your body has hit the plateu. It is when your body get so used to your exercising and dieting that your body is no longer losing weight. The technique to that is that you have to put variation on your exercise. Like me, Monday I do yoga, Tuesday I do kenpo (karate), Wednesday I do pilates, Thursday I do strength training....etc... Go to visit sparkpeople dot com. there are a wide variety of exercises there that could do. Good luck!

Well, I just simply changed my diet to more complex carbohydrates and natural foods and quit all the junk food. I wrote all I ate in a notebook so I won't go beyond my daily limit of calories and never missed a day without exercise.
