A friend's response gives me such an inspiration to post this discussion. I am thin and it seems it's hard for me to pull on weights no matter how I eat. I wonder whether this is because I eat slowly and therefore I chew the food well. If you have a plus size, you can try to eat the meal slowly and see whether it can help you to lose some weight.

Yes, chewing slowing will tend to get one to eat less as the mind has time to register that the body is eating.
It is found to be one of the techniques used to help people to lose weight.
Also, the longer you chew, the slower you will eat, the less you will shovel in your mouth when eating. As such, the stomach will digest better as the first round of food break down is done better due to the slower chewing in the mouth.
The main thing is that the brain will know that it is eating. And when that is registered, the body will not be needing so much food to feel full as the brain will tell it that it is eating.
It is an interesting fact. Something that requires some habit breaking in order to get it to work well in your diet.

Hi youless!
I agree with you my friend. I have learned in school before that chewing the food well is good in aiding proper digestion and it could also help you lose weight. I did a research on this so I can have it posted an explanation that could be more clear than if I will explain it my way. haha..
Here's the link I got the explanation from if anyone would like to read more.

There are a few reasons why eating slowly can prevent you from over-eating and thereby lose weight in the process.
First of all, it takes time to eat slowly by chewing your food thoroughly. Most people would run out of patience after eating for 15-20 minutes. So you wouldn't have the patience or the urge to keep eating after a few minutes are up. And by eating slowly, you have ensured that you eat less in those 20-30 minutes.
Second reason is that, our body is designed in such a manner that the stomach sends message to our brain only 20 minutes after you are full. That means that your stomach might have had its fill well before you even realize it. But if you eat slowly then you can overcome this problem to a certain extent.
Take care and have a great day!

Sounds like it would work. Will have to give it a try. My husband has not been able to gain weight as long as I have known him until this past year, where he has gained a small amount of weight.
Many people that are thinner, or thin, have a high metabolism, and some of us don't. So we have to be that much more active in order to maintain our weight, plus watch what we eat.
Great topic.

I really agree with you.
It's true that if we eat slowly and chew the food for 32 times per mouth, that we will feel few sense of hungry. This is I learnt from the TV. And I practise it, it really work.

I know that if you eat slowly then your brain has a longer time to realize that your stomach is full. Eating slowly is supposed to help people lose weight.

I also think if you chew the food very well it helps to increase the absorption of the food and also for the digestion. This helps to decrease the weight. I am trying to lose weight right now as I have some extra pounds. I think I should also eat slowly and also eat with chewing the food very well. I think our mind will helps to decrease the intake of the food if we chew the food very well.

May be it si hereditary. Were your parents too on the slimmer side youless/or it may also be because you haev fairly regular meals and exercise.[apart from the chewinf well aspect] Untimely meals and junk food cause people to put on unnecessary weight.
Dont worry that you are slim.People would love to be slim and look neat.

Yep, chewing your food thoroughly can help you lose weight. I read a book written by a French author about keeping your weight in check by chewing your food well. Im not really one of those people who take the time to chew my food well. I am the eat and run type but since I live in a big house with three flights of stairs to climb, I don't gain much weight. I get to run the stairs to check on my son in the upper floors more than 10 times a day so that is enough to burn the calories that eat!

we are actually taught to chew our food '40 times' before swallowing it..
that way.. we dont over-eat.. we dont put stress on our stomach.. and of course you will much less.. and can stay fit..
also.. we are taught to eat only when you're really hungry, and we should stop eating just before we get too full..
i think the idea is.. we should just eat - not to let yourself feel hungry..
there is no need to feed and stuff yourself every mealtime, if you're not hungry.. dont force yourself to eat..
i think if everyone thinks this way.. we will have learn to eat less - and i dont have to spend so much time cooking in the kitchen...

Good afternoon, youless. It is a good habit of your eating style, chewing slowly before it is well absorbed in the stomach. I think that it can be seen as part of the secrets of your staying good and fashion figure. By the way, however much my wife eats, she remains slim as well. My niece always admires her for her slim figure. lol. Take care and enjoy yourself, youless.

Hello youless. It is true that I have not been as active as I used to ever since the beginning of the winter vacation when I got back home. Now even when I am back to school, I find myself busy at the beginning of the school term. But I think that I will get used to mylotting a lot as before when I have adjusted to my work. Take care, youless.

It's definitely one of the biggest tips out there... along with drinking lots of water before and after a meal to help you feel full and to keep yourself healthy. I try to do this whenever I can, myself. It's just good practice. Besides, I like to ENJOY the food I cook! Thanks for posting.

Hi youless.. In my opinion, chewing slowly the food is one of the ways to keep or maybe cut down your weight. When chewing the food well, the food is broken into pieces in a way that makes your digestion very easily. In that way, its very easy also to excess it after digestion or else it will just stay inside your body and form into fats. Hmmmmm, I might start to eat now slowly and chew my food well since my weight is soaring up like hell. Im always on the rush that i tend to eat as fast as I can, maybe its one of the reasons of my weight problem now. Thanks for sharing you secret my friend.

Not sure if its the secret or not. But, it is true. The slower you eat the better off you are. This is because I've noticed that when I go to the Chinese Buffet and eat slow, I can't eat as much. Mainly because by the time Im getting my second helping, my brain is tellig me that Im full. Which from what I understand takes 20 minutes. So, eat slower and fell full quicker.

I think it is good habit to eat too fast and chew the food well when at meal, what you mentioned about remind me for one of my friend, he always eats slowly, but sometimes slow eating habit seems bring him some embrassing moment, especially at the moment some classmates had dinner together when we at the college, often most of us had finished our dinner and then just leaving him still eating, but we would not leave the dinner room first, we would wait for him to leave together. So he always seemed a bit neverous and then eated fast when he found only he was still eating, although we had told him don't be so hurry about that and just keep the habit as often. Actually it has been a long period of time after our previous communication, i think i shoud make a call to him. your advice seems useful, i will tell it to my friends who want to lost wight, thanks for your topic, have a nice day.

It may certainly be part of your problem, but essentially the key to gaining weight is to consume more caloric energy than you expend. While I do not recommend becoming sedentary (activity is key to maintaining good overall health) if you are truly trying to gain weight, you must eat more calorie-dense foods (nuts, fatty foods). There are also calorie dense supplements available on the market that can be added to your meal to help you bulk up.
