It hurts to smile!

It hurts SO much to smile, due to dry chapped and cracked lips.
Seriously, it's getting to a point where I get mad at my coworkers for making me laugh, because my lip splits yet again, starts to bleed, and brings tears to my eyes.
I've tried Vaseline, lotion, my tat wax (from when I got my first tattoo, I LOVE that stuff!) Drinking 3 bottles of water daily, doing everything at the same time as well! And nothing changes, I can only hope that Spring gets here quicker, because this dry cold weather is just murder on my lips! It gets to be -40 with the wind chill in the morning now, but it's finally starting to warm up. YAH!
Has this happened to anyone else?

Hi candymarie
It is really painful to know that it hurts to smile.
The basic cause is dehydration. But you are already drinking sufficient water.
You may try to keep your lips wet by some of the following tips.
1.Use a lip balm every time you feel dry.Keep it with you where ever you go.
2.You may apply a creamy lipstick on your lips.
3.You may apply some olive oil on your lips.
If these tips don't work out, consult a doctor. You may be suffering from iron and some vitamin deficiency! You may be even allergic to some toothpaste!!
Wish you a quick recovery.
Happy mylotting.

Oh goodness! I just had 7 cavities filled! My dentist would LOVE me tell him that I'm allergic to toothpaste as well! LOL.
I tend to stay away from over-using the lipbalm, because my lips would then depend on it too much, at least that's my theory. And I take daily vitamins, my friends are shocked that I do that willingly when I'm 24!

Not sure where you live, but if in the the great north, try some seal blubber. (kidding) When I talk to people with this problem it is sometimes due to eating too much of the wrong kinds of fat - meat, and not enough healthy fat - olive oil, to just name a couple. You may need to drink more water if you drink coffee or pop, big diuretics and don't eat enough vegetables.
It's hard to tell just by a post like this. Remember, our cells are bags (cell wall) of oil holding water (center of cell and fluid surrounding them & blood). If the balance if off we form wrinkles faster, our skin ages faster, have more dry skin and our organs suffer too. Speak with a Naturopath or Ayurvedic practitioner, maybe they can help figure it out.

I live in Calgary, AB, Canada.
Winter is JUST dwindling down, getting warmer, everyone is happy to see the sun today I tell you that! But in Calgary, there's not enough moisture in the air, which REALLY sucks, especially since I'm from Nova Scotia, an East Coast province, with LOTS of moisture.
But uh....I might pass on the seal blubber *eck!* he he.

This use to happen to my husband all the time. He has carmex in his pocket all the time. Blistex is also a very soothing medication lip balm to use. It feels really good and heals fast.
Sometimes when one uses lipsticks or chap sticks too much, our lips don't produce their natural oils, and they dry out faster.
I find if I haven't used lipstick for a long time and then use it, that my lips start getting chapped.
Try some other products on your lips, if all else fails ask your doctor or pharmacist.

That is very true! especially with Blistex, well that was the brand they used as an example for the report. Overuse creates a dependability on the product.
Tell your hubby I feel his pain!

Make sure you the lip balm you use has vitamin E and put loads of vaseline! I do suffer the same problem from time to time to the point where it's hard to put lipstick on but lip balm often sorts it out, just keep putting it on till the problem goes away... Also try E45 (think they do a lip balm too now...), it's great for all skin conditions and lippies too

hi, i may give you some advice on this coz i used to suffer this a lot, but it was years ago. My secret is to use lip balm at night, right before bed. I used Avon, cheap but workable, i'm not sure about other brands. insist doing this for a week, have a try.

you should buy some blistex, and you should exfoleate your lips. use some surgar, honey and green tea. i use that sometimes for my face and lips, you want the mix to look kind of like wet sand, put it all over your face and lips, try to to eat it, scrub very gentlly or else it's going to hurt.

i can understand perfectly how you feel as i experienced it myself in the past... what i did is to drink more water and i use lip balm every night before i sleep... it helps a lot for me... -40 is really cold... it must be really freezing in the place where you live... take care and have a nice day...

It happens alot. I use Carmes. It works for me and my daughter. And she gets chapped all around her mouth as well. Sounds like you are having a rough go. I found an article. It may help, or you may just find it amusing:

In the past my lips have gotten really, really dry, this year I have been fairly lucky, my lips only got mildly chapped, but my son's lips got really bad this year. So bad the skin around the lips got all swollen. We had to put vaseline on his lips and Neosporin on the skin around the lips. It worked after a couple of days and his lips got better, but for a while there they were bad.

Aw! My little cousin had the same issue, and he couldn't stop licking his lips, it got so bad that entire area around his mouth by a good inch and half, was just red, and looked SORE. On top of the licking though, he would rub furiously at his skin, his mother and myself (when I was their nanny) would just be SHOCKED and why he kept doing that to himself, and would constantly remind him to keep his hands down and tongue in his mouth. SUCH a bad habit for him to stop! Difficult, but he did it, and we're proud of him!
Thanks for the tip, the response, and happy myLotting!

Dear candy...it seems like it is an internal problem and has nothing to do with the weather most probably. I had this problem years ago and found a remedy for it. For a few nights you have to pour a few drops of Mustard oil in your belly button and cover it with fresh cotton. You just have to keep it doing till you feel your lips getting rich and soft right from insight.Meanwhile, keep using some Petroleum Jelly right before going to bed. Just apply a lot of it on the lips and massage the jelly well onto the lips until the 1st application tends to vanish...and then apply lots of the jelly to stay over night.

....I'm going to say no to the mustard oil on my belly button. No offense lol.
I will take the suggestion though for the jelly, you can have this one back though. *hands mustard oil/belly button back*

LOL i thought you were gonna say "it hurts to smile when you're not happy".
I use petroleum jelly (like vaseline) when i get very dry lips. But i heard petroleum jelly could be dangerous if consumed - i don't know, i haven't done research on that. I hope it's not true because nothing else works for me better than petroleum jelly on dry lips. godiva whitening lipgloss is my 2nd choice. but i have to apply it more often unlike p.jelly....

Oh goodness! I didn't hear that about the jelly either! I know some models used to use it on their teeth so their lips wouldn't stick to their teeth. Hoped they stopped just in case.
Hehe, yes, I gave my discussion that title to make people curious to come and read!
