I just got my computer back from the shop a couple of days ago because it wasn't running right and now it's back to it's formal glory! Yippee!! However, I wanted to pass along a little advice that was given to us. Use the browser Mozilla Firefox and not Internet Explorer because it's much safer against virus'. For some reason, virus' can't get your computer when using Firefox.
I'm curious as to why this is. Interesting and good to know but why is it much stronger than explorer? I've used explorer for years and years and had problems time and time again so now I'm going to use firefox since it has such wonderful protection! Will you? What do you think about this information?

Hey there dear lady: I used FIREFOX , and have for the last many years almost two years I think, anyway I love it, I hate IE, it got to the point where it just took forever and a day to do anything and I switched to firefox, I love it!!
and I do feel its much safer!!
Try it out , you'll love it too!!!

Hi there Jan! It was downloaded onto my computer so I am using it more often than the IE. Supposidly my statement isn't true, look below at #2 response. I'm not computer literate so I tend to listen to what others say especially the repair guy but then again, they could be fast into telling the wrong things so they'd have another repair to do.....

I totally agree with dreamweaver, IE takes forever to poad! I didn't know what I was missing until I tried Mozilla once and fell in love with. I do feel safer surfing the net when I use it.

I am using linux which is known to be immune to virus attack and it works well with firefox. I think internet explorer has been the pioneer in the computer world and virus has learn its way to attack its software or anything. I am not a computer savvy and would not know much about why and curious to get more information from other responses to your post.

Like you, I'm computer iliterate too so I don't know much about the insides of a computer and/or virus' and the workings of them. I don't know one program to the next. All I know how to do is work the internet and that's it so don't feel bad about not being computer savvy. I bet I'm much worse than YOU!! LOL But I'm watching and seeing what others say too but my hubby understands more of this talk than I do....

I have used Mozilla for a lomng time cats honey but lately had a lot of problems with the old one, had to do a total system restore (back to the very beginning) about 3 times and it was off to get fixed 3 times (they didn't manage to fix it so I eventually got a new one) but instead of setting up Mopzilla again each time I stuck with IE and I have to say that it is nowhere near as good as Mozilla and I couldn't wait to get back to Mozilla on the new laptop! lol I didn't realise that it was better at protecting from virus as well - that just makes it even more appealing to me than it was before! xxxx

Format that was the word I was looking for!!!
Just spoke to my other half and he said that a lot more virus are created to attack IE as it is owned by Microsoft and more people want to get at them! Whether or not it is safer it is definitely better so either way you are on a winner! lol
Did you make a dvd in case you need to reformat your system again by the way? If you do that it is so easy and cheap to reformat it yourself if you ever need to! Hugs xxx

I haven't a clue as to how to do that. Hubby might but I don't know how. I'm so computer illiterate that it's awful!! lol I don't even understand the termonology of most of the comments here! (Now I AM embarassed! lol) Just thought I'd pass along what was told to us..... I guess I stepped into deeper sand than I first thought! LOL

When my computer was in the shop, they had to reformat it so I lost everything that I had on here except for what hubby had saved for me. The shop repairmen had uploaded Firefox as well as internet explorer and told hubby that FF is better at protecting against virus'. I don't know how much truth is in that but I'm using it since he said it was better. However, I'm getting told that it's not true. I'm iliterate when it comes to computers so I have no idea but am just passing along what was told to us.

That is not true.
You are not protected from viruses in Mozilla Firefox. First of all viruses are solemnly something you have to download. Trojans and worms are a different story, BUT - Internet Explorer by some reason.. have this weird tendency to download things automatically and also automatically run them. Which is really, really annoying. And that's how you get unwanted viruses. Sure. But if you have a good firewall set up and a good AV system running you should be able to run IE with no problems.
Maybe it also has something to do with how each of the browser store files, cache and cookies. I don't know. But generally neither of them are a safe browser. I just want to put that out there. I don't want people to think that FF will protect you against viruses, because it wont. It is faster and more stable than IE for sure. Also it can't run ActiveX controls which probably is another reason for IE penetration.
But I am sure FF would run ActiveX if it could.
There's not really anywhere to be safe online anymore, it's sad but true :(

It's NOT true? Why would this repair guy tell us this then? I'm not computer literate so anybody can tell me anything and I'd still be way out in the left field scratching my head! lol But still, to me a browser is a browser and therefore anything can get past them if programed right.... can't it? Anyway, thanks for passing that on!

Well of course :)
But when they say it's safer it is true in the way where Firefox does not support ActiveX controls (which is a big risk factor since when activated the program can do whatever it wants) And the annoying auto-download/install thing. Maybe there is a setting for that nowadays.
So in that sense Firefox is "more secure" and I am sure if I would read up some on the subject I could be specific with small things. Like I remember when I first started using FF (at 0.6b in school because they blocked so much things in internet explorer) and everyone was talking about how you couldn't get spyware and spythis and spythat. But man.. running a scan now even if solemnly running FF you still got a lot to look out for on your computer.
I sound too pro IE. I really dislike IE haha. But what I am saying is that the base for network security is not the browser itself :)

I've used IE for years and years (shhhh! giving out my age now! lol) and never used FF before until just a few days ago and I find it pretty easy to use.... so far. It's just a matter of getting used to it, is all.

Yes that is true Cats
I have used Firefox and it's Add ons for 6 years now and it is certainly a lot better then IE
Make sure you get the Add ons the Important once are No Script Wot and Adblock plus
Wit No Script you control what Websites and other things you want to allow through
and with WOT it tells you if a Site is dangerous and then leaves it up to you if you want to view it or not

I'm not sure what all that is so I'll pass that on to my hubby who is a lot more computer literate than I am.... not great but better than I am! lol I know the repair man put ff on here and took off a bunch of other stuff that I used but it had to be done because of the awful virus which he had to reformat my hard drive. It's working a lot better and not soooo slow like it was so I'm happy..... HUGS!!

I love firefox. Most of the time it works great, I'm used to it, I love how I can enlarge the screen, and I've been using it for years. Internet explorer has some new features now that there have been some upgrades it's gotten a bit better, but I still prefer Firefox. The only thing I don't like about Firefox is that it screws up with certain sites.

I've gotten answers all over the board on this issue. I'm so computer iliterate that I don't know one way to the other. Maybe this will all come together some day. I've had to come to terms with this machine by not asking so many questions and to know that it just is. Why this and what is that and how this and that.... quit the questions and know that it just is.... lol I'm still confused!!

I used IE for a long time and then suddenly I had trouble going to a page because it had an important information box on it that would cover the normal information and then a little box would appear saying that the page would not open which it had but when I closed the little box, the whole page disappeared. So I got Firfox and it opened the page fine and I started using it even though there were several things I didn't like about it. Then it starting letting in all kinds of spyware, adware and viruses much worse than IE ever had, so I quit using it and uninstalled it. Then I went back to IE and the page I had had trouble with was no longer showing the information bax and the page would open fine. That page has had information boxes since then that cover up the page and I can close them and view the page just fine. So my experience with Firefox as far as keeping out viruses was not a good one.

Obviously not! Dang. I've heard a lot of good and very little bad about firefox but I never downloaded it because I wasn't sure how it worked. So far I'm not having any problems but we'll see how it goes in the days ahead. Maybe you got a bad version of it? I couldn't tell you since I'm not fimilar with it just yet.

We at the house use both I.E and firefox. The reason being is somethings don't work right on one or the other. I have known about firefox being better protection for years now but can't bring myself to go straight firefox only. Maybe one day I will.. But as of now I'm just going to visit the sites that I know are safe on I.E. and Use firefox when I need to .. While my other half uses firefox all the time and I.E. occassionally. LOL!!

Hey there! Thanks for that information that you gave. Although I rarely use Internet Explorer I have to be careful now because my computer can get hit by virus. I always use Firefox because it's a lot more faster than Internet Explorer. Videos and websites load faster than in Explorer I have to for half a minute or two. I know Firefox warns you when you go to a site that has potential viruses that can harm your computer. It shows a warning. Happy posting!

Hey there to you too!! lol You're welcome, I'm just passing along what was told to hubby and I however, you're very welcome! I'm new to firefox so I haven't seen much of it yet but am curious as to how it tells me when there's a potential threat. It'll be interesting in the least and hopefully my computer will come out a winner.... at best.

I'm finding firefox to be quite quick too and I'm liking it so far. I'm getting responses all over the table on this issue but being computer iliterate as I am, I don't know which is right and which is wrong. I'm just merely passing along what was told to me and hubby....

partly true, and partly not true. Virus can break through Firefox protection too. Just be careful what you are browsing at, and what you are getting from. Sometimes, you much better have some external protection from the commercial softwarez, such as Norton or McCafee.

They didn't say that it won't break through firefox but that firefox is better at protecting than internet explorer. You're right, we do have a virus protector on our computer. Thanks!

Maybe it's just by computer, but my Firefox browser has been crashing every 10 minutes or so for the last few days. IE never did that.
My computer has had a very health record so far, maybe it also needs to visit "the shop"

That is weird. Is there a way to go to the programs you've downloaded and "repair" it by hitting the repair button? Sometimes a program will have that and sometimes not. If not then yeah, I'd say it's time to go to the shop but make sure you find a reputable company that won't take you for all you're worth.

mozilla firefox is much better browser than internet explorer. It speeds up the browsing and its security is more strong than Internet explorer. It can save a web page lightning fast than Internet explorer. On unexpected restart mozilla can remember all last visits and reopens all the previous windows which is better than history. Mozilla's intregated downloader is very fast compared to internet explorer's downloader and mozilla's downloader have pause button that internet explorer's downloader dont have. Internet explorer consumes more memory than mozilla firefox and the list will go on like this so I think mozilla is a 1000 times better browser than internet explorer.

I always use Firefox. When I first started using the computer I used IE but as you say it is chock full of crap that passes the popup blocker and full of viruses. Firefox is so much better for surfing and playing games and doing just about everything. I keep telling my family to download it and use it. But they think IE can do no wrong. lol
Maybe after several days with trying to rid their computer of some virus they will listen to me.
Have a great day.

CatsandDogs I think your information saying to use Firefox rather then Internet Explorer to be very good.I'm not exactly sure about if Firefox is much better to use then Internet Explorer regarding trying to stop virus' but it could well be as I heard about a big sercuity flaw that was in Internet Explorer(which I belive is now fixed with the correct version-update) and this flaw may of made it easieer to catch a virus in Internet Explorer. Also, this may not be a virus-issue that caused this, but seeing as almost each time I have used Internet Explorer in the version it is (one of the newest I think) it has crashed and stopted working, so I would certaintly favour Firefox if its better, I'm typing this using Internet Explorer, sometimes the over browser on here(Opera) dosn't work either and crashes-I think converting to Firefox may be a great idea!
