As some of you might now, as I have mentioned it, that my mum turns 60 years old on the 13Th March. For her birthday she has asked me and my brothers to give her a photo of our families but it has to be a recent one taken in March this year. I started getting her gift together at least 6 months ago because I couldn't stand the thought of giving her just a photo of me and my boys. So what I decided to do was get 59 other small items together and put them in a box with the photo. I still have a few more things to get to make up the items to 60 and I must admit it hasn't been easy although when I began I thought it was going to be a walk in the park - wrong!!
So bearing in mind someone has been on this earth for 60 years, what would you buy them for their 60th birthday?

Ohhhh that sounds so sweet humbug25 :) In our case, we just took her to Boracay island, one of the nicest island in the Philippines. It was a simple celebration.

That is a wonderful idea.
What about one of those digital photo frames?
Her favourite movie?
A voucher for a spa day?
A rose bush?
A dvd with recordings of family and friends sending her a personal message?
LOL! I'm out of ideas allready!

Hi ya mummyofthree
Not easy is it? LOL The thing is that I don't want to make it too expensive, I mean things in the box have been a bit pricey but then others have only cost 99p!! Putting a dvd together of video clips with messages from all the family would be a great idea but I don't have the time to do that now but that's a good idea for her 70th!
Cheers mummy

Well, that's hard to say, considering I've been on the earth 66 years. When my brother turned 60 year before last, they gave him a dinner at one of the restaurants. My older brother gave him 60 NEW $1 bills. Nobody gave me anything on my 60th.

I think your gift of 60 items plus the photo was a very thoughtful gift and your mom is very lucky to have you as her daughter. You are a very generous and loving person and I know that your mom is very proud of you!

Hi there..I did this exact thing many years ago for my friends 40th birthday..I showered him with 40 gifts!..How funny! And you are right, it isnt easy and I only had 40 to buy!
Too bad you couldnt get ahold of 60 pictures, to make a collage of your lives and hers, from the time you were all little, and your mom as well.
I guess it all depends on what she likes..I like to do things that are different, like make a tiered birthday cake out of 60 cupcakes..

That is a wonderful idea and so caring of you to add things to her asked for gift. My mother is 65 and I buy her what she has asked for or said that she needs or wants along with other things that I know she would like. I also give her money when I can as she is on a limited income.

I would buy something they can use for their hobby
if the person likes cross stitching I will go to shops that sell craft items and buy them something that are useful for it
my hubby will just send them card and a bit of money so that he doesn't have to go out and look for himself
but your idea sounds really creative and a keeper

That is so cool! When my son turned 14 I did the same and hid them all over the house....you have to have alot of imagination to get someone 60 gifts and if you got most of them you are good!!! I would even include some small gift cards to like a fast food....so they can have a treat too....my dad always loved them and just used them to stop someplace for coffee. Happy Birthday to your mom!!!!

That's a cute idea. We had a family member have a similar request and what we did was get everyone together (those who live in town) and went down to the beach to take a group picture. We all wore jeans and white shirts to get a uniform look, and a photographer friend did us the favor. We then had the picture printed and framed and it turned out to be quite lovely. I hope you mom enjoys her gifts and has a very happy birthday.

Hi ya di1159
That is a super idea!! I don't live in the same hometown as my mum and neither do my brothers so it would be very difficult to do something like that, even her sisters live miles from each other and everyone else too! I plan to give her the photo in the morning and then surprise her in the afternoon with the rest of her gifts in the afternoon when we are back home!
Thanks for sharing your experience with me, I enjoyed hearing about it!

I can't think of e better one than what you intend to give her. Giving here 60 small items is a sure way to make her happy on her birthday. You can also compile 60 sayings and quotation about how good she is a your mom. Or a 60 message for her.. anyways, I wish your Mom a very happy birthday this coming March 13.
Now if you ask 59 small items, here's I can suggest:
comb, lipstick, wallet, coin purse, photo frame, a scent diffuser, a tea candle, mug, a nice brooch, handkerchiefs, tote bag, a small book, a prayer book...
Oh my I am running of ideas!
how about cd albums? or movies she liked?

You had a really good idea with the 60 little gifts, but I think the photo will be the most precious one. You could add gift certificates for books, chocolats, a dinner, a pedicure or a manicure. Things that will not take up much space. I imagine she has enough vases and other knicknacks.
When I turned 60 my son who was at 3000 miles away at university came for a surprise visit and my other son arranged a surprise party at a friends house. That was the best birthday ever.
Now I will be turning 70 very soon and I have asked my kids to please not to do anything or give me any gifts. We finally agreed that they can take me out for dinner at a nice restaurant. As for other things I really don't want anything that adds to clutter in the house since I have a very hard time keeping up with housework due to illness.

Hi ya Lindalinda
I think your kids will find it hard not to buy you anything for your birthday no matter how you protest. My father is getting married this year too and they have asked that no one buy them anything but I couldn't help myself!! It's not that I don't respect their wishes, it's just that I feel that I can't celebrate their wedding day unless I give them a gift to help celebrate the day!
Thanks for your response

What else does your mum like that can be added to the gifts? just curious. Does she scrapbook, likes postcards, been to America, etc? just generating some interest if I may here. Does she love bubble baths, going places, shopping etc? gift certificates are good too.

Hi there Savvynlady
Well my mum is a bit tricky to buy for as she doesn't dress up to go out much, doesn't wear make up, showers rather than bathes etc. I am getting there and if I am 2 gifts short I will make it up in lottery tickets or scratch cards but I think I will just about do it.
Thanks for your response

It would depend on what the person likes nad what they already have. If it were my Mom, I would give her a picture as she requested, but also things like books that I know she enjoys reading, figurines of unicorns because she has always collected them, a gift certificate or gift card for dinner at a restaraunt that I know she enjoys as well as the grocery store or other stores I know she likes, but only goes to when she is looking for something in particular. I would include her favorite perfume too.
After we moved here, so far away from my family, I had a harder time finding gifts for them. For Mother's Day, I took my kids out to many different places and took their pictures, had my brother-in-law take some pictures of my husband, me, and the kids all together as well as some of me and my husband, and I compiled them in a photo album for her. This way, she had recent pictures of all of us and it was not just one picture. She told me that this was the best gift she ever got from me.
Whatever you choose to give her, try to make or get things from the heart that will reallt mean something to her personally. If there is a special time that you can remember that you had with her growing up, find some little token to show her that you remember. No matter what you decide to do, I am sure she will love the gift, Mom's normally do!

I think it would be sort of cool to go to your local library and see if you can get a copy of the paper 60 years ago or maybe even the newspaper place might have one. It would be neat to see what was going on 60 years ago when she was born. Just a thought!

My mom is nearing the big 6-0 and I've been considering taking her on a trip for her birthday. She gets to go away often, but not often with our family, so I think she'll really like it.
