Do you back up your bookmarks?

We all have websites we regularly visit, and we have sites we like to keep handy for a certain time when we need to recall them with little effort. Bookmarking is great for this cause, and it is used by a lot of internetusers. And then... CRASH! Everything is gone! We backup our pictures, photo's and files, but do you back up your bookmarks? And if so, how? Do you copy them onto a cd or write them down old, old fashion? I copy them onto a back-up cd but am thinking about writing them down as this has less potention of getting lost, scratched or have errors when stored properly.

The browser I m using is Mozilla Firefox. Hence, I have downloaded an add-on called Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer to manage my bookmarks. This add-on brings about the convenience of being able to access all my bookmarks online by accessing the website. Hence, I am able to back up and access my bookmarks remotely even if I am away from my own computer.

That's a great thing, because you will be able to access them everywhere. I don't think internet explorer has that function, but it sounds great. Especially if I am in the library or somewhere else and want to look up bookmarks I saved for my college work. It's a shame the schools intranet doesn't work with firefox, I hear so many great things about it!

I think it's a good thing to have a standard amount of time inbetween updating your back up files, I don't have such a thing just yet but it sounds like something really worth the effort. Thanks for responding to my discussion, Balasri.

You are the first one to respond that still writes her bookmarks down. I think this is possibly the savest way to store them. I was counter responding to another person who had replied earlier, and I came up with the option of copying and pasting the URLS in a WORD document and printing them out. If you like having your URLS on paper this might be a time saver for you aswell. Thanks for responding!

Yes i do bookmark important sites which i feel like. I even take backups of my bookmarks. Its very neccesary to keep backup of every thing. You never know which site becomes important. Anytime you may feel the need of any site.

True, and it will save you a lot of time if you don't have to search for the site all over again. Some sites are harder to retrieve than others. When you keep an up to date back up of all your files you are more certain that if anything happens to your pc or laptop that it won't cause you any other inconvience other than the loss of a machine.

I think the most simple method nowadays is exporting your bookmarks (most recent browsers have this function) and storing them on a USB-drive. That's how I do it. I put more trust in a USB-drive since CDs tend to break much faster for me, or other things could go wrong with it, as you said.

I agree USB-drives are more solid and durable than discs and other methods of storage. Nowadays USB-drives don't cost that much either, so getting a USB-drive isn't that much more expensive, and you get a much more solid item for that price. I allways use a USB drive for my schoolwork and pictures and other files, I am not sure if I have put my bookmarks on there too? Big chance I have and didn't think about it when writing this topic. USB-drives are great! Thanks for responding.

talking about USB drive. i have just bought mine yesterday. for the price of $0.50 for 1 GB. well it is really cheap i may say. and i so i may save my bookmarks there soon. but well most of my bookmarks i ahve save in yahoo bookmarks. cause i don't want to save it in my computer before cause my computer needs from time to time reformatting. and it is really such a hassle to make another set list of bookmarks. i love to bookmarks cause it saves me a lot of time to type the website i need to visit and i tend forget those sites i do usually visit cause they are so many websites now that i do visit every day.

No, I don't back up my bookmarks. I don't usually visit my bookmarks very often and indeed, I don't think I care that much for the bookmarks. For the websites I visit regularly, I usually remember them by heart *winks*.

It's a good thing if you can remember your favourite sites by heart. The longer you manage to do this, the more solid they will become in your memory. Sometimes we do lose certain memories and all of the sudden they get back to us. It's wonderfully strange how the human mind works . Thanks for your response.

Since I use Firefox, and it has a cool feature called delicious. I have my books in delicious website and I don't have to worry my bookmarks will be lost due to any accidents:) In fact there are some online bookmarks, so I don't have to write down the link addresses. I love China

That sounds great, youless. I have heard a lot of good things about firefox, but unfortunatly the intranet my college uses doesn't work well with firefox. Also, the whole file on how to use the intranet is explained for internet explorer users. So that's basicly why I haven't switched browsers just yet. It would give me a lot of extra work and bother with my college stuff, and that's a big chunk of my internet use all together. Thanks for responding!

Yeah, i learned it from experience. My computer would restart then all my bookrmarks are gone. My Netscape browser is kind of sensitive to improper shutdown. I looked for a way and realized that i can export my bookmarks. So i did then burned them on a blank dvd. I label them with dates everytime i made changes like adding some more links. I even have a special folder for myLot bookmarks.

Wow, a special folder for mylot bookmarks? Are you bookmarking discussions or different aspects of the website to go there quicker? I am curious to know, and if it saves you a lot of time. I never thought about making a mylot bookmark. Surely I have made a bookmark of the front page, but no more than that (and when I visit I pretty much allways type it from the top of my head as it isn't a superlong or hard URL). Please enlighten us .

Yes, I do back-up my bookmarks. I usually save them to cd or dvd. I copy them to multiple cds and dvds so if one of them gets lost or destroyed, I still have another copy or two. I don't really like the idea of writing them down since there are just too many of them and besides...I'm too lazy to write them down. Have a good one.

That's a very honest response, and there are lots of other ways to store your bookmarks so there is no need for you to put effort in writing your bookmarks down if you don't want to. Thank you so much for responding, sixclix, have a great day!

Actually I have not backed up my bookmarks, but I can see where I probably should. Writing them down sounds like a good suggestion too. I think I can remember most of the sites I have bookmarked, but definitely I would not be able to remember them all. Thanks for the idea. I had not given it any thought before.

Good to hear that this discussion has made a difference for you . The bookmarks we use a lot are indeed the ones that we can remember easily, it's the ones we need from time to time that we don't save in our memory and will get lost if we don't back them up and our computer crashes. Thank you for responding!

I actually back up my bookmarks only when I have far too many bookmarks, or only when I remember to do so. So far, my computer has never crashed, causing me to lose my bookmarks. When I do back up my bookmarks, I would copy them to my usb thumb drive so I can have access to them wherever I go. =)

Having your bookmarks everywhere you go sounds like a great thing. You have a back-up and a way of traveling aswell when you use a USB thumb drive as a back up solution. The only thing that scares me is when you lose your USB thumb drive along the way and have no other form of back up. Losing your bookmarks is not nice, but if you also have pictures and personal files on it the loss would be even bigger.

I usually back up my bookmarks on USB. I used to write them on book,it lit bit time wasting but like you said, the risk of lost is small.. But now i save it to USB,it is more practical.

USB-drives are great for backing up files, I agree. Wrting them all down is indeed very time consuming. Whilst answering these discussions I came to wonder; why not copy and paste all your URLS in a WORD document and PRINT them?! It costs less time than writing them down and it is very safe aswell. I'll think about doing that sometime, it sounds like a good idea... thanks for your response!

I do it a lot more now to backup up my bookmarks. I have lost really great sites because of the computer crashing. I usually back it up on three different places. I export bookmarks to cd, online on yahoo and on stumbleupon.

You have really putten some thought into this, BinaryKat. It's a good thing not to put all of your eggs in one basket, if you know what I mean . If for some reason one of the three places fails you bu crashing, breaking, going offline or getting lost in some other way, you still have 2 other places to turn to. I hope you will recover some of those cool sites you lost, I am sorry that you did lose them in the first place.

I have a little addon for my web browser that saves all my bookmarks online so in case I have a crash or whatever I just restore them. It's pretty convenient :)

I agree, that sounds pretty convenient to me! What type of web browser are you using if I may ask? I use internet explorer and I have never seen a function like that? I don't use any online ways of storage because I have a little more faite in things that are touchable in real life, for example a USB-drive or written on a piece of paper. But I do think this is less work, especially if it keeps updating itsself (that's something I sometimes forget, to regularly update my USB-drive/cd).

you can export the bookmarks in IE and Firefox pretty easy. I do back them up just to keep the bookmarks on all the machines I use the same. Then i back them up to a jupm drive and they are on a file server at home. Some on them I am sure do not work and I should clean them up but who has time for that. I keep them all as this way if i ever wanted it i bookmarked it, so i will always have it I guess, kind of a pack rat thing.

I have some pretty old bookmarks aswell. Even though they are not on my current machine, I have backed them up on a floppy drive! My laptop doesn't even support that feature anymore, and I am curious to see which old websites are on it and if they all still work. I guess neopets is one of them as I started playing that over 6 years ago.. and perhaps dreamvalley-mlp as I am a my little pony collector. So I can relate to the packrat thing.. I never throw away bookmarks either.. just in case .
