This city's pollution is taking its toll on me.

India
March 2, 2009 9:48pm CST
Now as I am in one of the most densely populated and polluted city world over, Delhi, the atmosphere here is taking its toll on me. I have caught cold after some 3 or 4 years and I am feeling spent at the same time. I guess I have to fight not only with the increased work I have been put to but the pollution as well. Two things that I can't do are to stay indoor or to travel by air conditioned vehicles. Can you tell me how to fight pollution with those restrictions.

That is a tough one. Have you seen a doctor at all? It might be wise to see if you have allergies, or something else wrong, that is affecting you.

it is really difficult to be dealing at the same time with a demanding job and the existent pollution of the environment. the only advise that i can give you to deal with this and cope with the situation right, will be to take time outs in those forested areas during weekends. this will envigorate your spirits very much, lightens up your feeling, and most important, it will promote better health. another thing will be to keep within your house an oxygen tank. take deep breaths using that oxygen tank in order to keep your blood cells and the brain too, well supplied with that most needed amount of oxygen from time to time. the main reason why we feel so bad and get sick easily when we are always exposed to a highly polluted environment, is the very low oxygen content in the air we breathe.

Have a mask on your mouth and nose! That is the only way you can fight with pollution. I have been to delhi for 6 months or so but I felt that Delhi is less polluted than my home town that is Patna. There every vehicle is running on CNG which doesn't emit smoke at all!

But Delhi is a lot more polluted then Bhiwani and I am still adjusting. And yes most of the public transportation is running here on CNG but the private vehicle are still using petrol and diesel.

Yes, it is a problem with all the cities. I live in Chennai and the pollution here is horrible. The sad thing is I can't run away from the city leaving my job and other things. It is not possible for me to find the same job in my village. I don't know how to fight against this. I am also a victim of city pollution.

same here with me. i am already considering finding a place to settle in the outskirts of the city where we are currently taking residence. it is of considerable distance as it takes about three hours ride. when commuting, it might take four or more hours from this place to the heart of the city. however, considering the healthy environment that we will be enjoying if we live there, it might outweigh all the disadvantages. most likely, i will just find a way of finding a living over there if ever we would decide taking this step finally.

But then 4 hours of commuting will have almost equivalent effect.

Even i live in one of the most polluted city in the world that is Ahmedabad. Well you do have a problem mate so the only thing you can to is wear a face mask or say tie up handkercheif over your nose that will restrict polluted air to go inside your nose and it it will even help to to keep your face clean from the dust....

I would say, move to a less polluted area, or try to stay away from the most polluted areas around there.

And statistics and environmentalists say that the Delhi air has improved much over the years, as also its green cover! So what would you do if you lived in Calcutta? Jokes apart, pollution is a serious health hazard and I think a morning walk in one of Delhi’s well maintained gardens can give you good fresh oxygen for the day ahead. I think you can also increase the intake of food rich in antioxidants to fight the free radicals entering our body and wasting it from inside. Amla is a wonderful source of VItamic C and antioxidants and amla is now is season too. You should have some slices of amla and a spoon of pure honey everyday.

See Dabur is a good branded company but I don’t know about the purity of its honey. If you take a jar of Dabur honey, you will note that in the ingredients part, pure honey is not mentioned. I take Himalaya Honey instead wherein it is clearly mentioned pure honey as the ingredients. You see, it does matter what the companies write on their labels…if some day I take a jar of Himalaya honey to be tested, I am sure it would turn out to be pure honey, otherwise the company can be taken to court. Similarly, I don’t think Dabur is 100% pure coz it does not say so. So you can take any good honey, but do check the label for the purity.

That was the word I was looking for, a bit at least, the antioxidants. Thanks dear. And yes the green cover and pollution in Delhi has came down a lot, I had visited this city before and as far as I can remember in the period from 2000 to 2002 it was horrible to be on a Delhi road. As far as pure honey goes, will dabur honey do? and I'll take some amla for sure.

Wow! come to Canada. We don't have a lot of pollution. I can't imagine what it must be like to live in your area, or in Beijing China, for that matter. At first when i read the opening to this post, that's where I expected you to tell me you were. I remember all the problems they had there, getting the place cleaned up in time for the polymics. YIKES!

I wish I can come to your place some time in near future. By the way I am in Delhi, India. Something very similar to what you have quoted might turn up here as well. Delhi is going to host the 2010 common wealth games that is if everything goes well.

Yes, the world is getting more polluted. This is not only in your place but in my place as well. It would be difficult not to catch cold most especially if our resistance is weak. Well, I guess you could get some shots for colds and flu. I had this before and I never had any serious flu or cold for sometime. This could be useful for you most especially that you are quite busy with work.

I'm pretty gratefull I can stay indoors and have aircon with it. In Port of Spain, Trinidad, in the Caribbean, where I live, there has been heavy construction going on for the past four years and the entire city is smothered with dust and heat all day except for a few hours early in the morning. I get the cold regularily and when I do the cough follows. I take all the vitamins and medecines I can think will help and it doesn't stop. Lots of people in Port of Spain get the virus all the time since the city has lots of garbage which is not properly collected everyday. Just because its India doesn't mean much as far as I am concerned. We get the same thing in our little Caribbean islands.

DEAR DEAR DEAR...no one is complaining about the conditions in India here. It is a beautiful country. The only thing is that I have been in very small town all my life up to now. You hardly see an automated vehicle after 7 in the evening and now I have moved to this city where there is rush, crowd and pollution.

There probably isn't a lot you can do, other that to try to do any traveling at times when there is few people out, or to try to pick routes that are perhaps less traveled...if there are any. You could wear a face mask againt the pollution, but you may not feel comfortable doing that. As far as the colds go, whenever you move to a new location you are always exposed to new germs and viruses. When I first moved from Massachusetts to Oklahoma, I had colds all the time. After a while I built up an immunity...and I'm sure you will too. Other than the colds, volume of people and pollution, are you liking Delhi? It must be exiting to meet lots of new people. If you have access to a digital camera, I'd love to see some pictures.

Okay. Now to answer all of those I have to tell you something about Delhi first. Delhi is the capitol of India, so no problem with the places to visit to. It has a great history and related monuments scattered all over it. The problem is I don't have the time to visit those places. I am going to go to a few of them though and I'll be going to my native place every chance I get to be there, as it six about 6 hours from here. And yes I am studying IBM mainframe here.

Perhaps the bright side is that you really aren't going to be there that long, right? How many months are you supposed to be there? Haha, have you made yourself a countdown calendar yet? If there are any museums in the city (there must be, right?), places like that should have pretty good air filtration to maintain their collections. When you aren't in classes or visiting outside the city in your spare time, try visiting some of them. It will be a little respite from the pollution and may make you feel better. By the way...what are you studying, if it's ok for me to ask?

That's a really tough situation. My son suffers from allergies and when pollution levels are high I can't let him go outside as he is hightly sensitive. It's even harder on people with breathing problems and asthma. There's not too much you can do except move and I suppose that's not an option. Maybe you can consult your doctor and advise him of your condition and perhaps he can prescribe something to help you. Hope you feel better soon.

I know how you felt about polluted city, when i was at big city in our country anywhere i can breath the pollution air from the vehicles all over the street. I felt so much awful every time i smell. So, when i go out i use to ride an air condition public transportation but usually i bring a mask and i wear every time i go out. I suggest you to wear mask too so you can smell the air pollution and prevent you to get a air burn disease.

Aww maybe you can just take more vitamins? And perhaps wear a face mask so that you don't inhale all the bad air? I live in Manila sometimes and it's polluted over there too. Unlike you, I prefer staying indoors in any air conditioned facility rather than being outdoors where ll the smoke and dust is. I still catch a cold at least twice a year though, so i take lots of Vitamin C.

Hi coolmailraj, There is not much you can do with pollution in your city short of using a mask where ever you go, your country needs to change and start cuting out pollution, but for the moment wearing a mask for your nose is all you can do. Tamara

Population is every ones deep concern. It's happening all over the world. Yet folks doesn't care at all. Cooperation is been ignored. WE go to save this planet or else, we are going to destroy it with our own eyes, by utter negligence.
