What does this indicate to you? Familiarity or closeness? What does it denote to you when he calls you by your nickname in front of your classmates? So you find it offensive or endearing? what are your thoughts on this?

Does your nickname irritates you? If not, well its good knowing that your professor know a bit deeper about your life. Unless your nickname is annoying / irritating to hear, then you should be glad about it. (Unless your professor keep calling you by your nickname and you feel it might make other students feel uncomfortable, then you should consult your prof.)

Eh. If it bothered me, I'd ask him to call me by my real name.

For me it simply means that the professor knows you. I find it very comfortable that a professor would call me by my first name or nickname. It is also a way of some professors to bridge the gap between teachers and students, it helps in a ways that communication will be much more open and teaching would be easier.

It depends on the Professor. I have one who I am very friendly with - I have had him for 5 classes now and one of the classes only had 3 people in it so he got to know all of us pretty well. I have no problem with him saying , "Hey, Court! (My name is Courtney) How is it going?" walking down the hallway or him teasing me in class. He teases everyone he knows and everyone knows he isn't being cruel anything. He's a fun guy. There are a couple of other teachers I don't mind, but there are some that I would not like them calling my nickname. They are the ones that I don't particularly like. I don't mind teachers getting to know their students, I think its a good thing.

As long as my prof doesn't call me by a nickname that isn't mine, then that's fine. When I was in school, I didn't like being called by my real name, I preferred my nickname sounds a lot better.

No, of course not. I think it's actually nice that you are even being recognized by the "authority." I don't find it offensive. It does indicate familiarity, not necessarily closeness. It's a good thing, isn't it? Unless he calls you by your nickname when you don't want him to. Do you hate it?

I will look for the tone in which he calls me.If it is friendly then okay and if it is abusive then I will tell him not to call me like that anymore. This I will say in a stern tone.He has no rights to irritate me as he is simply a professor.Again,if he is friendly towards me,then I will take it as a compliment of closeness.Cheers!

Yes, Andiel told the right thing in case your nick name does not irritate you there should not be any problem or rather you should feel privileged that the professor knows you better. If not the professor should not. My self a college professor never call any of my student by their nick name unless I know the student and know that he too would not mind.

I don't care whatever name my professor calls me as long as I'm not doing anything bad in class. Some professor easily remember their students nicknames so I think this is the reason why some professors call you by your last name. I don't think that any student should feel offended whenever he is called by his first name.
