Hello mylotters! I know there are a lot of people from from different countries with different races and ethnicity. So have you ever read a discussion that is badly worded(wrong spelling, out of this world words(lol), etc.) and has incorrect grammar? I have read lots of them. I'm not saying that I'm proficient with the language. I would say that I have some knowledge about it because I'm not an American or a native English speaker. English is a second language for me and most of my country men. How do you feel about such discussions? Do you get annoyed? Do you try to correct them? Me, at some point, both, yeah. But, I try to understand the fact that they are not so good with the language. So, I have to adjust and try to understand what they really wanna say and not focus on the words and grammar.
So how about you guys? How do you feel? Thank you so much for taking the time to read my discussion. Have a nice day. Happy posting!!

I understand your point. There are times when the discussion is awfully messed up and has grammatical errors...especially tenses and determiners. If the discussion has a good topic to offer and sensible one, I usually respond to it.
But there are another set of discussions which have been started just for the sake of sarting one and are usually senseless. These are not only poorly constructed but also poorly thought of......you kow what i mean. These are the dicussions that annoy me. Adequate knowledge of a language is needed (and can be achieved through genuine effort), but more importantly....basic sense is required to begin and respond to discussions.

In mylot, there are many kinds of people with different degree of language skill. As such, the existence of such discussion is not unexpected. As long as I understand the discussion, I am still tolerant. It does not matter if it is written in perfect English. I feel as long as there is a message conveyed, the discussion is successful. If I do not understand the discussion, I simply skip the discussion.

If I could still understand the gist of their discussion, I would still participate as usual. I really don't make an effort to correct anything if I do find anything that needs corrections. I would always think that they would eventually know the proper way to spell or how to construct sound sentences as they go along being active in this site.
Me, english is also a second language to me and I sure do have to learn more about it, similar to deeper languages that my native language would be to me. At any rate, I guess it is proper to correct them immediately so that they wouldn't commit the same mistakes again and again but, I still prefer to let them realize their own errors by viewing other discussions that they can participate in. That way, it wouldn't be so awkward when someone really points out one's mistakes while anyone who gets to read the post would also see how he or she is getting corrected.
Well, that's just how I do it here.
I wouldn't go along a discussion if its not really catching my interest so, even if its not well constructed properly but, still has the essence of the discussion, I would still participate (^_^ )

English is my native language. I was taught to speak correctly from the very beginning by my school teacher mother. Thus, it really rubs against the grain when I hear or read people butchering the language. However, I have only corrected anyone on MyLot once. I had already established a reciprocal (though unspoken) agreement with her.

Yes, most of the time user who are from non English background, used to make discussion which are not too good with the grammar and all. I don't mind them doing that as this a place where people come to share their ideas and it is not their fault that English in not their language. They tends to learn very fast because you guys are very sound in english which encourages them to do good.
I have had a chat with one girl from China and she left this site because she din't liked it but when she realized that her English is getting worse then she came back and her English is now very good!

I do shake my head and just laugh inside. But I try to get the point and courteously respond. It's not easy if you are not fluent in English. I too have a lot of limitations and sometimes feel like dumb when I am conversing with a native speaker.
If indeed I do sound funny to the really good ones, and they'd laugh at me, I'd feel bad so I try not to do it to anyone.

Hey there! Now, you've responded here.lol remember the golden chihuahua?lol that was me. Anyways, yeah it's not easy if you're not fluent with it. It is hard to converse with a native English speaker verbally, but if you're chatting it's a lot easier. Thanks for respoding and sharing here. Have a nice day. Happy posting!!

Love your icon.
Yes, i have seen some really weird spelling and stuff. But as long as you can understand its ok. But i have seen a few here that are spelled correct but i just do not understand what they are trying to say at all. I check the profile and see they are from somewhere outside the US. I dont correct any one. If i dont understand what they are saying i just dont respond. Move on to the next topic.

I have read a lot of discussions that worded badly. I know that this is a world wide website so I know that a lot of people don't speak English fluently, that does make it a little easier to understand. I only find it frustrating when I really can't understand what it is the mylotter is trying to say. To play it safe I don't respond to them sometimes.

All the time. I read them with run on sentences and poorly used grammar, etc... It's not like I can gather them all together and sit them inside of a huge English classroom of some sort. I don't get annoyed or disturbed by those sort of discussions, as long as I can understand what they are trying to say. I do assist them where I can, but I don't try to do it openly. I'd do it privately mostly. I wouldn't do it publicly, unless the were obnoxious with the entire discussion or response to one of my own discussions. I try to get along with all people. If others need a helping hand, I try to give it to them. I don't try to belittle or embarrass anyone. Basically, I try to treat others, as I would like to be treated. If I'm wrong for doing that, then I guess I'm guilty.

Same with you my friend I read and try to understand what they are trying to say up to the extent of their strength. Even me, I am not really good in english and i'm always grammatically wrong when I able to speak English. Because during my time when I'm still a student I was always absent in my English subject and if I am present, most of the time I was sleeping during discussions. In my native land English is next to our language and it was very important to know this dialect. As of today we are in global world it is now important to converse in English especially if we are applying for a job. I tried to improve my english even today. And i love to read their blog even it has wrong grammar but I did not attempt to correct their spelling.

I feel mylot and its members are very tolerating to its members and friends. Having said that, I would rather all users pay attention to the wording, spelling, grammar, whatever constitute the discussion. It is a sign of your respect to the readers, and will be the ruler people regard you in response.
One thing is special for me, sometimes, the not so good language is from the native speakers of English. They are equally obliged to use standard language on an international site. Illiteracy is not a good thing in the long run. It will prove to be a barrier to our life.

I can figure out most things written, even with bad grammer, or wording that is less than correct in many ways.
But I have to say that I have come across a few that for the life of me I couldn't figure out no matter how much time I spent on it or how much I tried.
I wound up deleting the post as I couldn't figure out what was being said.
As English is a second language for you, let me say that you do very well. No one would know that you weren't born into the language.
Welcome to he lot. I look forward to more post from you.

Hi AltheGreat,
I am not at all perfect in English especially with grammar. I didn’t show any interest to study grammar when I was a student. Once I have read one discussion and I could not understand anything. I skipped that discussion because I thought that I didn't understand it, as I am poor in English. Sometimes grammatical errors happened with me also. It may take two or three days to realize the same and at that time I murmured myself ‘Oh my God, I used the incorrect grammar' (lol). But nobody corrected me except the last time (I asked a question and two responders told me that it would be like that, before getting their response I realized the mistake but that time I could not do anything).
I have received responses with poor English and I never tried to correct them, I know it may hurt and I don’t like to hurt anybody. Finally mylot is valuing everybody and not allowing teasing anybody if they are not good in their language. The only rule is everybody should write in English.

During the course of mylotting i daily come across several discussions in which there are several typing , spelling and grammatical errors. What surprises me most is that many come from people who live in English speaking countries like the UK and USA. I never comment on this aspect because it really does not matter to me in what manner they write as long as the message they are trying to convey is clear and explicit. I know that many are not proficient in the English language since it is not their mother tongue so i do not pass any comments nor do i try to correct them.lol

The posts that I do not like to read are the ones that use 'text speak'.
U no wat I mean?
It doesnt matter too much about spelling or grammar on a site like this because of the masses of people who use it who have English as a second language....and even the people who DO have English as a first language cant always get it right.
It is a strange question to ask, especially when your grammar is not correct in itself.....and you will also find that Americans write differently to English people? So who do you judge by?
And not forgetting Typos.....which are not the same as bad spelling.

hi althegreat! how are you? yes, i have come across several discussion already that are badly worded and with incorrect grammar! the truth is, i really don't mind it as long as i can understand what's being said, what topic is being discussed and the subject matter is clear to me. that way, i can still contribute to the discussions. otherwise, if i cannot really understand it, then i opt not to comment or reply because i believe i could only send conflict or misunderstanding if i don't understand and still participate on the discussions.. right? happy mylotting!
