i was watching TV this morning......actually i was watching The History Channel, and they were talking about sending these girls in the 50s to charm school.
i've seen the subject of charm schools brought up before on old movies and TV shows.
so my questions are:
is their still charm schools in existence or are they extinct???
did any of you girls here attend a charm school???
can you charm me???

kind of.. i went to a modeling school but it taught us all the charm school stuff so i felt like i had been.. so i think they still exist but are more hidden in what they are.. why else would you learn how to use the right silverware in a modeling school?!?!

hmmmmmm.......i thought modeling schools just taught you how to walk around while balancing a stack of books on your head.
that's how the sit-coms always portray them anyways.

yeah, plus those dolls from the adult book store
always have this expression .
it was a great idea calling them "book stores" so our wives and girlfriends think we're READING or something.

I went to finishing school in 1995 (Lucie Clayton in Kensington, London) which I suppose is kind of like charm school. As far as I know it is still going, but I think it might be the only one left in England (I'm not sure though).

Nope, never had the pleasure. I attended ballet, tap, baton and tumbling classes, but no charm school. Aha! Maybe THAT'S what's wrong!! But wait, I'm southern, and ALL southern women have charm, haven't y'all heard???

Hoo baby, I'd like to see that too! Especially since I took those classes about a million years ago! Yikes, if I even attempted a tumble, I don't know that I'd be able to get up again. But it sure would be fun trying!!!! And (southern-speak) why thank you, Mister Sconibear, you sure do have your own charm, darlin.

Haven't you seen 'Ladette to Lady', Sconi? They have a very strict finishing school in England, where rough lassies are sent to be made into laydeeeees! They've just sent a bunch of Australian slappers over there for the treatment ... God help the Brits!

yeah, it was actually the history of street gangs, and they were saying to keep the girls out of the gangs they would send them to charm school.
so i guess back then, they thought instead of raising women to be tough and stick up for themselves, they would raise them to be Miss Manners and June Cleavers.

I saw one the other day at a local mall. I went in to inquire as I was very curious as to how to teach charm since my daughter is in a "State of emergency" when it comes to charm. Turns out, they were more like a modeling place, where they taught young girls how to walk, pose, etc. etc. I just walked out. That wasn't the kind of charm I was looking for.

You mean to tell me that you can't tell I've been to Charm School?.
All that money I spend for them to show me how to walk with a plant on my head.

I think a lot of people today could use a dose of charm school to teach them some manners. I am tired of out of control children running around in restaurants, teenagers that are "bored" so vandalize property, and people that give you the finger in traffic, or shoot you for looking at them the wrong way. I am not talking about women only, but for everyone, men included.
It was something that worked at the time because women were brought up to be charming housewives who depended on men to survive, so you had to be nice to husbands. Whether they still exist, I do not know. I suppose they went the way of dance studios and the home economics classes in high school.

I think "charm schools" are sort of outdated, mainly since - in my opinion - they existed to teach women to "behave properly" (you know, be appropriately submissive and feminine and all that).
That said, these days I think that many people of both genders definitely need to attend a "manners school".

yeah, manners schools is a good idea.
the problem would be finding qualified teachers in today's society.
