Although this movie has swept all the major award ceremonies around the world, but i am not able to really understand what is so special about this movie. If you guys have seen this movie. kindly help me in putting this movie into a better perspective. Because after watching it for nearly 2 times, i am still not able to find anything which can be termed as very special about the movie.

Well, mainly because people love rugs to riches story. Stories of success and finding a long lost love are key elements that make movie-goers want it. To put it in a more simple context, it is an inspirational story that makes everyone believe that no matter what their situation in life right now, they could still make their dreams come true and honestly, I really do think it's special, the film was artistically made.

May Be! The rags to riches angle is one that might have appealed to you; but if you look at the history of Indian Cinema, you will find that there were better films made than this, which i think were more worthy of this award.

I have not seen the movie. What I hear about it is all good. However, it has been my observation that 75% of the movies even nominated are ones the general public doesn't care for. This is reflected in online reviews, outgoing surveys of movie theaters, and even the box office. But since I haven't seen Slumdog Millionaire, I can't form my own opinion about the movie. I have however, been very unimpressed by the films the Academy deems as Oscar worthy.

No, I have not seen the movie yet. I am waiting for it to come out on DVD since I don't have the time to go to the theater and see it. The actors and producers and writers in Hollywood seem to think they are the best judge of what they think is "good" cinema. We have the People's Choice Awards here, which gives people the chance to vote for their favorite movies and stars, but it isn't even close to a prestigious event. It doesn't even have specific categories. While I'm sure the people in Hollywood think they know good film when they see it, I also think their pompous and overinflated opinions of themselves and their world gives them the impression that no matter what drivel we think a movie is, they firmly believe it is high art. Slumdog Millionaire is of course not what I would say is drivel, but based on past winners, drivel has definitely won before.

Now that almost 3 weeks have passed, i believe you must have watched the movie SLum DOg by now. Please tell me about your opnion on the movie, and also tell me whether you think it deserved to win so many Oscars? ANd for the second part of your discussion, if most of the nominated movies are not from the the popular movies; then what are these awards constituted for? It is actually the people going to cinemas that make a movie hit or a flop. The best criteria for a movie success should always be based on people's opnion; and not on what some cynical critics think about it, isn't it?

I have heard and seen the trailer of that movie but unfornately, I haven't watched the whole movie. I already have a DVD of it but got no time to watch it. At least, I am now reminded that I still have many movies to watch.

I even do not find the song 'jai ho' a good song which has made rahman sweep the oscars .The only reason for its triumph is its direction which is done by an english men,,danny boyle. It is highly praised because living in a posh country ,he is making a movie from slum. If it was a movie from an INDIAN director ,it would not have brought laurels. Am i right???

I think you are absolutely right! Had it been directed by an Indian director, the movie would never have been able to win so many awards.

i have not seen it yet. and it is not yet shown yet here in my country. i don't know what makes this one interesting. hope to enjoy it once it has been shown here locally. for sure it will going to be shown here as well. anyways, i too love the rags to riches stories. and love to know more how people were able to go through their difficult lives. which is not so different here in my country though. there are so many poor people here though i will say that india has more though considering their large population.

Me too my dear friend! I have also been forced to think about the funny criteria of these awards, and on what basis that they decided to give the Oscar to this movie.

Truly speaking being a INDIAN also i did not liked the film because story line is disgusting it does not draws your attention in between movie become intresting but at last it becomes boring again. I cannot imagine how it got oscar i think what was wrong with SWADES this movie have upper hand from Slumdog in all parts of movie except director as an britisher"DANNY BOYLE".

No this is exactly what i wanted to hear from a true patriotic India. A movie which does not show our country in Good Light becomes nominated and gets awarded at the Oscars just because it is directed by a foreign director, who also carries the same image of slums in India, as the other do.

it's quite relevant. with messages of true love and a slumdog being a good person, and that it wasn't really his luck that brough him to the big million bucks, but his way of keeping memories no matter how insignificant they may seem (remember the dollar-bill question?) i think it won best in directing because of how these messages (above) were portrayed. i've always liked flashbacks, though. so that's just me. the movie is quite heavy.

There is no doubt that this movie is made very nicely; and presents a binding tale of that boy from a slum; but do you really think in your heart that it deserved to win so many awards? That's exactly what my issue is. I mean, Oscars are believed to be one of the finest in motion pictures, and for them to be so heaviely biased against just one movie, seemed a little odd to me. Afterall, there were other worthy movies as well, who deserved their share of recognition.

No dear friend! India is far more vivid and beautiful in many other shades of life as well. What you see in this movie is just 10% of the entire India. The rest is dotted with so many things that you would find it hard to see in your entire lifetime. No! I am not bragging, neither i am being too fussy about muy country!I tell you, you must come to India atleast once to find out what i am talkin about.

Good for you! Even I am sick of wtaching these funny, melodramatic, songs filled masala sequences which have almost the story line and that same happy ending. ALthough, there have been a few young directors who have started making some good movies in different generes.

Even i've seen the movie twice and haven't found anything special in this movie. Perhaps the movie appeals to outsiders by showcasing the underbelly of India, but as an Indian, a lot of the stuff seen in the movie is what we see everyday out on the streets( except for a slumdog winning such a huge sum of money)! Had the movie been a complete Indian production, it would not have done that well in India! Although if u had to point out a few things as special it has to be the cinematography and the music!

Very true my der friend! This is precisely what i am talking about. There is nothing special about the movie; but just because it shows our country in bad light, it has appealed to the people in the west.

I havnt seen this movie yet nor do I really want to see this movie. Even though I expected to win a few academy awards since movies like this always wins awards I was pretty shocked it won 8 academy awards. The most I thought this movie would win was 3 or 4 not 8.

Ya! That's exactly the point that i made. There were other movies as well who deserved to have their share of accolades as well. But giving all the awards to just one movie sounds a little too much, and can be quite disheartening for other directors who had also put in their best efforts for creating similar masterpieces apart from Slum DOg.

The film is good it gives you that feel factor but i do agree with you that the fim wasn`t that good in compared to the awards which is been received by the film. The film is good but not so much plus i find the flm quite predictable i mean you are know that jamal is going going to win the prize money right from the word go. I think the director is quite influentional.....

I too didn't find anything special about this movie. The story-line is breathless, heart-breaking, exciting, action-packed, romantic but not like winning oscar. Acting was not so good. No comment about direction, I do not have much knowledge about it. And if I consider music then I must say that AR Rahman has already composed much better music than what he made in Slumdog Millionaire and he should have got oscar much earlier. So, putting all of them together I think that this movie has been bit overrated.

slumdog millionaire is a movie more like a love story of 2 childhood friends who gets separated & met again to get fond of each other & in the process they got richer through some unexpected fall of events also the life of slumdogs is illustrated in the film & their cunningness to survive also kudos to a.r.rahman for such excellent music it's truly fine performances from every actor.

There is no doubt that the movie has many good things about it, including the soul stirring music of this genius Rahman; but don't you think that it was not so exceptional to be given so many awards...?
