How do you feel about others disciplining your child?

I know a long time ago if neighbors saw a child into mischief, they may take it upon themselves to discipline. Friends of the family have also been known to "help" mom out with an unruly child from time to time. Just the other night at my daughter's girl scout meeting a little brother of one of the members was acting out towards his mom and the troop leader came over and picked the boy up and took him to a seat and told him he shouldn't talk to his mom like that. Was that crossing the line in your opinion? Would you be ok with someone else doing the discipline? Even if you don't have children..if you did would you allow it?

Discipline should be the responsibility of the parents as it is important for consistency in discipline. However, if the child was being disruptive in a Girl Scout meeting the parent should have addressed the issue so that the leader could maintain the leadership of the meeting without interuption. I do not discipline others children and would not want someone to over step their role in my presence. If my child needs to be disciplined when I am not present such as school or scouts I would expect the discipline to be appropriate and hands off.

Well in a way, it is crossing the line. But, it is good that someone wants the child to respect the mother. This has happened to me plenty of times. I would go somewhere in public and someone would hear my son talking back to me and they would tell him not to do that.. I thought that it was out of line, because it is my job as a mom to tell my son this. But, when it comes to spanking, I will tell them no, that I don't want them spanking my child. I and his father will be the ones left to do that. I don't even like it when my sister, his auntie, would spank him. I will get mad and tell her to tell me when he gets out of hand.. Sometimes, my sister will spank him when I am there at the house!! So, I don't like noone spanking any of my kids, not unless it is me or the father. And, if they have not been given permission to spank my child, then they better not do it!!

If the school teacher disciplines my child i will not mind it.If my child is wrong and someone tells him something i will not mind it.If somebody beats the child then i will not tolerate it.If the child is good and still someone is disciplining him then also i will not tolerate it.

Hi vicky! School teachers are definately in the right to discipline as our children tend to spend as much if not more time with them as they do with us. Authority figures should be recognized by children at an early age and respected. Your idea of "good" may not be the same as someone elses. Are school teachers the only ones you let discipline your child or do your family members or friends help? Thanks for responding.

I would never want other to discipline our children - I mean when we have them, hahaUnless we're not around, but even so I believe if a child is well trained at home, he or she will not misbehave in public. Well, at least the troop leader just told the boy & did not hit him which is not too bad.

I think that's what bothered me about the story in question. The troop leader physically picked up someone else's child when the parent was present.

If my child had been misbehaving, I would hope that someone would discipline them, verbally and then let me know about it. I will do the same, too, for others, and have been known to discipline other peoples children. I am a teacher, so it comes naturally. I have never had anyone tell me that I was overstepping my boundaries, because I am not mean, just firm.

I agree but I do not consider that type of behavior to be discipline, I consider it verbal or physical abuse. Speaking with a firm voice and serous face is the most that a person who is not the parent should do, unless the child is in danger and they need to take action, physically, to remove them from that situation.

Hi nanajanet! I can see where having been a teacher that discipline would be a natural reaction. If I were away i would want my child properly corrected and then told about it when I came back. I think that how a situation is handled is key. Thanks for the input and take care.

I think it depends on what the child did , and how the person tried to discipline
the child. If my child was doing wrong I expect someone to tell them No!
I wouldnt like it if someone was yelling at my child. If somebody tried to
punish my child I wouldn't like it . It depends on the situation .
I wouldn't want someone to discipline my child if I am right there , that is my job . If my child was doing something the person didn't like and I was away
I would expect them to let the child know its not allowed , to firmly say
No ! and then tell me what was happening when I return so I can also take care of it .

well i would have felt ashamed a little bit that somebody else has to come & teach my child discipline , it would be like questioning our parenting skills but it would be nicer of him to come over & point that mistake of our children so that we can take care of our own business.

I think what the troop leader did was ok, since she saw that the mother was not able to handle the little boy. She simply talked to the boy about what he did wrong. I don't mind having my friends or sisters scold my kids if they are naughty but there are still certain boundaries that must be met, like if I am with them, then I should be the one to do the scolding, no harsh or hurtful words, no shouting and no spanking. I would rather that I or their dad be the one to do any physical punishment. If it were a complete stranger scolding my kids, then it would probably depend on the situation and how they corrected my kids.

I think most of us would not be happy at the situation, if some one else is trying to discipline our child. We would like to discipline our child ourselves, it looks comfortable to us.

I would have a problem with that, it would make me uncomfortable and embarrassed at the same time. I wouldn't want some stranger picking up my child and I would be embarrassed because someone else was disciplining my child when that is my job not theirs. There have been times when I wanted to discipline someone elses child but I have never had the guts to do it.

Closest I have come to disciplining someone else's child is requesting they don't do this or that at my home. Even then I felt uncomfortable but mom seemed ok with it. I would feel like you would if someone else had to discipline my child while I was there. Thanks for the response.

I would never allow it. I don't have any kids, but, I do have a cat and she is my child. One time I had a visitor over. Mija, my cat, jumped up on the table and started sniffing at her coffee. Right away the visitor smacked Mija on the nose and I got very upset about it. I told her I didn't appreciate her disciplining my baby and she started arguing with me and I told her to leave. I don't even yell or hit Mija myself so you know I'm not about to let anyone else yell or hit her. The woman was out of line and a total disrespectful jerk!
Purrs,
Catwoman=^..^= & Mija

It depends on who it is and what the circumstances are. If my kids are at school, or at home with a babysitter, of course I expect the authority figure(s) to step in when necesary, but, if I am right there and it isn't a close family member who is trying to help, yes, I would get a bit upset about it.
In the sitiuation that your described, I would have to say that in my opinion, she crossed the line just a little. She could have told the child that sge didn't appreciate him speaking like that to his mother and left it at that. If the behavior persisted, she could have asked the mother if she felt that he needed a time out.

Hi lynnemg! I agree. I think that if the parent os present it should be brought to their attention first. I would be offended if someone tried to discipline my child if I were right there. School and outting without me..I would expect my children to follow the rules and be corrected if they weren't. Thanks for the response.

i sometimes want to discipline kids of other people but i don't feel it is any of my business and the parent might get offended, but if the kid is acting up in my house or with my children or family, i will not hesitate to give the kid a few pointers since he will be in my territory and getting an attitude with someone close to me, especially if he is doing something wrong that i do not want my kids to imitate. if you tolerate these kids, other children will see that they can do the same thing and not raise any complaint or reprimand from parents. so i think i will do something about it if i feel that i am in the right place and time.

Thanks for the response. Oh yes..in my house I have rules my children must abide by and I can't let others come in and do what I won't allow. If I'm around children that are acting up I use their behavior as examples to my own that if you done that I would...or if you acted that way you would...kind of scenario. It helps in teaching bounderies to my own. This is usually in public I get these examples though.

Dear friend,
If I could find it really helps my child and betterment of my child I would cop with it. But if it hurts my child gives my child a much negative impact or if I feel that my child really do not what that from that person I hope it may make me either to respond or to get my self uncomfortable. I would like to see my child well disciplined and meanwhile happy and enjoying life too.

I would like the same for mine as well. I don't think that another's input is a bad thing if like you said it doesn't effect my child negatively but if I'm there..I would want to handle it myself. If not..then I would still like my child to abide by the rules and be corrected fairly.

Unless I am gone and you have been put in charge by me or my husband then disciplining my child is out of the question. I would rather a parent take me aside and ask me to address a problem, like if we are visiting someones house.
I have had people stay with me who tried to discipline my children and after many problems I say one set of "chiefs"(mom and dad) is enough.

I would have done the same thing the scout leader did, I don't have to put up with children that misbehave. If their parents don't do it I will or I'll leave. If the Mom doesn't like it she needs to make other arrangements for her child. When a stranger takes over the child very often listens and I am never mean so believe it or not children love me.

Hi savypat! I think that a child actually likes and respects fair discipline no matter who it comes from. It's a way to show that you care about them and what they are doing. A lot of children act out for attention too. I've never taken it upon myself unless I was babysitting. I usually give a time out and tell mom when they come pick them up. Kids are usually good for me though. Thanks for responding!

Up to a point, yes I'd allow it. I dislike having to discipline other people's kids. I find it offensive. But if they're destroying my house, and their parents are sitting there ignoring it, I will speak up. If the parents don't like it, they can leave. I never was able to do that before my sis-in-law. She trained me well. As she put it, while training me to deal with my own kid, "If someone is letting their kids destroy your house, then get ticked off and leave cause you told them to quit it, what have you lost? You just got rid of kids who are obnoxious, and the parents who think it's cute. Where's the loss?"
That comment has helped me deal with a great deal of stress with people who come visit. If they're insulting their parents, even in my house, that is for the parents to deal with. But if he's insulting me, or calling me names, they can leave. I don't much care. I won't be talked to like that.
I once slapped another parent's child. In their house. Think that was horrible? I was pregnant, and the little monster punched me in the stomach. I was 7 months along!! The mother just laughed and thought it was so cute! Since he was being praised, he pulled his fist back for another punch. He was a rowdy 9 year old and could do no wrong.
I don't like other people disciplining my child, or someone else's child. But sometimes you just have to, when the parents won't step in and you have reason.

Hi snowcat! Under those circumstances I would say you would be right to step in and correct another's child. I don't want my house tore up or punched by any child. I don't put up with that out of my own and I'm sure not going to put up with it from another. If a parent obviously ignores a child's bad behavior or thinks it's cute I would have them leave too. Some parents just do not care how their children act. I can not tell you the times me and mine has made a special trip to the restroom to straighten things out if I fely like they were misbehaving..lol..Thanks for sharing and take care.

I think a suggestion to me would be enough. I dont think you should approach someone elses child without at least saying something to them first. I understand if they are in school or daycare, etc and have time outs and what not but not just some individual. Especially if I didnt know them. My husband is the stepfather of my 3 older children and of course he sticks them in time of from time to time. We never lay our hands on them and I know even if we did he wouldnt do it, he would leave it to me.
I actually had a neighbor a few months ago that saw my son running around playing tag and she didnt like that he kept tagging her daughter so she took it upon herself to pinch him and tell him if he touched her daughter again she would punch him in the face...UMMM NO! I got so aggravated. Can you imagine saying that to a kid? Why would you touch another persons child, and then to pinch....who is more childish?!?!
I dont know....just my opinion

Wow..that would make me mad too. I would have rather had a call if she thought my child was acting out of line with hers. Step parents is great to bring into this discussion because there are some of them that take a great part in their step child's discipline. This can be the end of marriages for some if they haven't discussed how the discipline will be addressed. Thanks for the response.
