To which extent should religious freedom exist?

In my country a man was given a suspended jail term after admitting to dressing up as Jesus Christ during carnival celebrations. I find this habit of dressing in religious customes in carnival as trying to put religion in ridicule. Do you agree that such behaviour should be banned? To which extent should freedom exist?

religious freedom belongs to everyone.
I have one question for you,I am a Witch, should I be affended by all the children that wear costumes that they believe represents my beliefs?
My answer is,no,this is the way they were brought up believing we look like, anybody that is that fanatical about religion, should understand, just because you beleave so highly in your religion, others do not,and in actuality, could care less on what you think.
My belief is to live and let live.
Many Blessings.

Thank you for the kind words from you both.
and you, jedi, just described what parents teach children we look like, and as you are pagan, you understand what harm is caused by these teachings, but as this is many hundreds of years of pursecution, even today, people are still afraid of that which they do not understand.
And I find this is true of all religious beliefs.

The trouble with that ban is that anyone can say something is offensive and ridicules their religion. That's the trouble we have in the U.S. and we've ended up banning all public displays of religions that at Christian. The rest are ok because they don't offend anyone--or Christians just choose not to be offended, maybe.
Once you start banning things that offend people, you usually end up banning the things that you cherish.

I agree with this. People have GOT to start SELF censoring. If YOU personally don't like something, don't look at it. Don't listen to it. Don't read it. Don't get involved with it. Don't shop there. ETC ETC ETC! It's quite simple. Don't get the arrogant idea that just because YOU dislike or hate something or are against it that the person in FAVOR of it is purposely TRYING TO OFFEND YOU. This is not true, and it likely isn't about you at all. There are things I don't like. Doesn't mean I am personally offended and think that someone who LOVES it HATES me or is trying to hurt me or make me feel bad or get me upset or angry, etc. They probably have no idea I even exist plus my opinion shouldn't matter to them nor theirs to me.
What I see instead is someone hates something they try to get it banned, which interferes with OTHER PEOPLES' enjoyment of (insert thing here). I think THIS is not fair which is why I am against censorship and banning of pretty much anything. Several examples - I don't smoke and I wouldn't personally have an abortion, but I am completely in support of smokers' rights and the rights of women to have final say over their own bodies. If I don't support free choices I am in essence cutting off my own foot down the road.
I mean just because someone else hates a book I love or hates a tv show I watch or hates a video game or a musician or whatever, I don't believe in any way, shape, or form that THEIR OPINION OR DISLIKE should translate into anything that affects ME, so they should take their hate and keep it to themselves!

Boy...oh...boy, ronaldin~~~~This is a discussion that I will have to put on the "back burner" for a period of time, and do some clear-headed thinking about my response! Right now I am seriously vascillating...between freedom, and proper decorum! Cheers!

I actually see nothing wrong with dressing up in a costume (regardless of what costume it is) for a celebration. The only time I feel religion is a problem is when someone is badgering, harrassing, or otherwise bothering someone who doesn't want to hear about it or be converted. I hardly see wearing a COSTUME as badgering, harrassment, or bothering lol.
The key thing here is that people MUST stop trying to be offended and people also MUST stop trying to impress THEIR beliefs on others. Everybody should be free to believe what they want but not go beyond that and ever tell someone else they are right or wrong, because I don't think those terms exist when it comes to beliefs.
I'm never offended JUST because someone believes differently than me. I'm only offended if they tell me I'M wrong or try to convince me to agree with them. That second sentence there is what needs to be cut out and removed from life. Once people stop doing that to each other, then there will be true freedom.

From ever since persons has been ridicule Jesus Christ so it is nothing usual. What we should always remember that Jesus himself as spoken about blasphemy and since alot of us know that doing these things to God and Jesus there will be redemption they will continue to do it. Remember that it was the hard line that persons were taking why Jesus Christ came to lighten it up. Freedom is there to the fullest extent as long as you don't sin and committed evil acts.

I think it is ludicrous to send this man to jail for that. It would not happen in our country. Church and state should always remain separate and in the USA, the first amendment, freedom of speech, sort of covers this, if I am not mistaken. Even if it was ridicule, he was not breaking any laws.

I agree that it doesn't seem he was breaking a law by wearing a costume. I really think people make much more of how people dress (or costumes) than they should, and that figures into what I said about how some people TRY to be offended so of course any little thing that could offend them is more likely to as a result.
As far as separation of church and state, I really wish it went a little farther than just no national 'religion' per se. I really wish it meant that people couldn't harrass and push their religion on others, because that in a nutshell is what's responsible for a lot of anger, wars, issues, etc that exist.

Now, do you think that Jesus would be angry? Well, I think no and if they thought of that kind, forgiving soul, they would realize that he would not want that.

I live in California, and we see people dress up as anyone and anything around here, and no one says anything really. Yes, some people are offended, but people have rights.

The thing s if you take away that man's freedom to dress as he please concerning Jesus then you open the door to have other freedom taken away too such as where you want to worship and when and how you want to worship. I think that you can't jail a person for having poor taste.

Wow. Here in the States you can dress as Jesus, Mary , Or Joseph. In fact there are plays where you portray Jesus. We have a holiday in October called Halloween where people dress up and party. Here you could dress as Jesus for Halloween . It wouldn't be seen as ridicule, It would s be seen as odd but as admiring Him. It wouldn't be against the law. Me, I am not a christian so I can't say if it is wrong or not. Religious freedom means that there will be times when something is done that you personally don't like but iot is legal. So there isn't a limit to religious ftreedom. Either you have it or you don't.

YEah, it's indeed ridiculous.. Because he can be going round cheating ple, as a pretect of being jesus.. lol =D In a way, if such a thing happens, they are actually making a mock out their religion..
NO matter what religion it is, they have to be respected and though there's freedom involved, but one should know their stand and show the right respect ^_^

In our country you are free to practice your own religion as long as you are not violating any of laws of the country. The law is just and fair to everybody even to all religious sects.
The church (catholic) has the right to excommunicate an individual from going to church if he/she does not deserve to be there. I'm not too sure what are the provisions for a person to get excommunicated though.

I have spoken to people who actually believe that they have spoken to CHrist (ike on the bus yesterday) and to one guy who is convinced that he is Jesus Christ re-incarnated. Of course these people are probably mentally ill, but then again...
I mean if some guy told you he was the son of God, you would think he is crazy, right?
The point is, people are going to do things that other people think is crazy or inappropriate. Doesn't matter where you go. Maybe it is how this person expresses their religious fervour and dedication.
People need to learn to be tolerant, I think

What a poor man.I think he should learn his lesson by given a suspended jail term. What he did offended God which is worshipped by most people. He played too far.

I do think religious freedom should exist, and I would not want to stop anyone from practising their religion, although that doesn't mean I would accept the right for someone to kill someone else in the name of their religion. There are points where it can cross law or moral boundaries and there is common sense to be applied here I think!
But basically, I want the freedom to worship as I wish, to meet with people of my faith freely, to speak my opinion freely, to disagree with others respectfully. I should have freedom to say I believe another faith is false, even. So I wish freedom for others too.
I wish we could get rid of the idea that being 'tolerant' means we all have to agree and be the same and can never speak up an opinion about something. Freedom means we can be different and BOTH say our piece, and respect each others right to do so.

I think that people should respect each others religion. The things that are sacred to different religious groups should be duly respected by others. These sacred things and symbols should not be abused and used to redicule or put to shame any group of people. We should always remember that our rights end where the rights of others begin.

Hi ronald, to me it doesn't really matter if you do dress as someone in a carnival, it may not be to ridicule the person they are dressed as it could easily mean they are making a statement of their beleif, and people should remember that Jesus did walk among the people anyway whomever they were too...littleowl

As mac1946 said,” Live and let live". This is like the political correctness debates we often have at home. Where do you draw the line? It's a free country and if a person is not harming anyone he can dress as he pleases, besides if all this guy did was dress up as Jesus and nothing else, in my opinion it doesn't warrant jail time and Jesus himself would be the last person to be offended, I think.

That's prosperous. I don't think you fully understand freedom. Life is full of things that offend us. You can't ban everyone and everything that offends you.
I don't see how his dressing like Christ could hurt anyone...

Hello my friend ronaldinu Ji,
I think, it all depends upon people accepting or rejecting. Also, people should not
make fun of their religion. There have been many such occasions on date. Say FM hussain's
paintings regarding Hindu Gods and Salamn Rushiede's verses. So, I would say, let's never make
mockery of any religion. may god bless you and have great time.

In my view, religion should be respected by the followers and not making fun of it.
