Do you wash your hands after using a public restroom?

Okay, I have to admit I am a but germ fiend. I hate it when I use a public restroom, and there are other guys in that same restroom that use it, and then suddenly walk out not even bothering to wash their hands. Come on, nothing is that important that you have to run out without washing your hands. It takes 20 secs to wash your hand, and another 25 to dry them off with paper towels. What about you, can you explain to me why someone would do this? I don't do it, and definitely don't allow my children to do it. If the place they are at doesn't have a sink, we will allow them to use hand sanitizer. Please share some insight on this pet-peeve of mine. I'd really like to stop cringing every time I see this happen. Thanks for your responses!

I always bring with me a hand sanitizer. Most public restroom in the Philippines do not have supply of paper towels or liquid soap that is why may be some people do not bother to wash their hands. Water alone could not kill the germs, right? then since there is no paper towel so I guess they think there's no way to dry their hands. So they would opt not to wash their hands.

Well Hdjohnson you really have apoint there, I doesnt make too much of your time to wash first after using the public restroom. I do practice washing hands after using the public restroom for sanitary reasons too. You may never know who touch the door knobs or the faucet knobs who didnt event think of washing his hands. But really yes, we can observe other people of not washing hands after using the public restroom, kinda shocking too. There are some reasons for it, either they are hurrying up to catch something or too busy, or they use their own hand sanitizer. Some maybe just plain too lazy to think about washing hands. They don't know they can carry huge amounts of bacteria to their homes if they haven't washed after using the public restroom. For me, I think if your not really doing it as a practice at home you do it as well in public, yet you don't know the consequences of not washing your hands.

Hopefully, people will start to learn about the bacteria and other germs that they are able to contract as a result of poor hygiene. That is something that we who do wash our hands can hope.

Erm I wash my hands after using any restroom, whether it's public or in my home or in a friend or family member's home. It's basic hygiene as far as I'm concerned. The worst places I have seen people not wash their hands is in bars and nightclubs, it's like they're so desperate to rush out and have their next drink or snog the next guy they see that they can't be bothered to do something as basic as wash their hands. I have a friend who is so paranoid about germs in bars and restaurants in the toilets that she uses a tissue to open the door handle because so many people don't wash their hands and then their germs get passed to the door handles which is actually really gross if you think about it carefully. What's the point of you washing your hands and the next moment opening a door handle covered in germs?!

Anonymili: Thanks for responding, because you bring up such a good point, which is something I've been teaching my son about. Those folks that don't wash their hands. Well usually the paper towel dispenser and the trash can are right next to each other in correlation with the door. So, I would dry my hands first, and then use the paper towel to open the door. Put my foot in the door way so as to not touch it from the outside, and then toss the paper towel. My son was thinking why do I go through that much "trouble." I explained to him that it's the things that you don't see, that can cause you to get sick without really knowing any better, so you had better take the time to do as much preventative as possible, before the consequences catch up to you. I think he got the picture after I shared that. He's come to learn about consequences a bit well.

You're a good dad to start teaching your son such important lessons about hygiene from such a young age. I wish more parents took their responsibilities as a parent more seriously - if they did, we wouldn't be seeing so many people in these public restrooms who DID NOT wash their hands LOL! x

Oh my goodness! Not only do I wash my hands after using a public restroom. But I wash my hands after using ANY restroom. It is very important so you don't spread germs and disease!! I carry hand sanitizer in my backpack and open doors in public with the sleeve of my shirt or a clean tissue! I too have children and encourage them to do the same. Everywhere you go there are germs, but all you can do is do your best to take care of yourself and your children!!

I obviouslt wash my hands after using a PUBLIC washroom. You never know how much bacteria is in those places. Its not healthy. You should always wash your hands when useing them, or you may get sick.

I would wash my hands in my own home as well. No need of faking the funk while I'm in a public place, besides people that don't wash their hands in public, most likely don't do it in their private homes either.

It's about hygiene which makes me wash my hands after using a public rest room or even on my own rest room. Bacteria can be everywhere not only to rest rooms. It spreads easily and can lead to sickness. Besides, water is not enough to wash away and kill germs and bacterias, so it is really necessary and make it a habit to wash and sanitize after using the rest room.

Lol, I understand what you mean, that grosses me out everytime I see someone not take the time to wash their hands. I think it's just laziness or they really don't care about germs like some of us. I absolutely hate going to any public restrooms unless I have to and it's usually because my kids have to go because I will hold it as long as I have too, lol. I wash my hands every time and my kids do as well, to be honest it even disgusts me at some restrooms to even touch the sink but I usually do the "grab the paper towel trick" and dry my hands than turn off the water and will open the restroom door with the towel too and won't let the kids touch the door. I think I've seen too many shows about germs now I'm aware of everything and try to be so careful.

What alarms me is that some people wash their hands, then they use the toliet---and proceed to walk out of the bathroom without washing their hands again. Why do they do that? What could be so dirty on their hands that beats whatever is about to get on their hands? Yuck is my response to those who do this. Now, I will admit that I think I notice this so much because I used to work in food service. So I would use the restroom, wash my hands, go back into the kitchen and then rewash my hands yet again. I also used to wash my hands when I was on register every twenty customers or so. My customers used to thank me for taking the time to do this. Maybe we should thank people that we observe washing their hands before they leave the restroom. Or would that just make us seem creepy?

I NEVER EVER EVER use a public restroom, because of the nastiness. But if I did I would most definately wash my hands at least 6 times... then use germ x also. I shiver at the thought of a public bathroom, people are so nasty these days.

Well... but if you are outside, it is hard to avoid public restrooms... Thankfully for me, we have relatively clean toilets over here...

Better is to slap hard on their face whoever comes out without washing their hands. They really would have touched the knobs of the doors which we defenitely will touch them when we come out.How can one imagine to come out without washing their hands after using a public restroom?

LOL I'm sorry but I had to laugh out loud at this response. That is a bit extreme to say you'd slap someone's face for not washing their hands, they could charge you with assault and then you'd be in trouble!

Nah. Germs are what make humans live longer and healtheir lives. We are SUPPOSED to be exposed to them. NOT exposing ourselves to germs is more prone to kill us because our bodies cannot defend us from things. Besides, I don't pee on my hands. lol

I am, and always have been, a compulsive hand washer, even when it was not so widely publicized. Because I have either always worked with children or mentally handicapped adults, I tend to remind a lot. I have to stop myself, though, when I start wanting to remind strangers to flush and to wash.

I always wash my hands after using a ublic restroom, because I don't want it to bedirty and I would not be able to eat or anything, because I would feel that something is wrong. I don't know why is that, but I am sure that you need to wash your hands, it's a must!

I know! It's so annoying! There are those who don't bother at all - I really don't understand this! I wash my hands first thing when I'm coming home, after each chore in the kitchen, after taking the garbage out, after cleaning,I wash my hands so many times a day, that I can not even count. I insist that my kids do so, too. And my husband. And I'm not a cleaning freak. But to be clean, it's important. There are so many germs around us, that can make us sick. Our body is not very strong, and if we don't keep it clean as much as possible,we're going to suffer, not anyone else. So, for our sake, that's all what it takes - to wash our hands.

I wash my hands whenever I can in public places. Unless I'm just waaaaay too lazy sometimes. You know those days when you just don't feel like taking extra steps to do things.
