we usually wash our hands before taking our meal. but are you sure you wash your hands properly. last month when i went to Apollo hospital with my father i have learned a new thing. the authority sent my dad to a cabin. the cabin was well furnished. the bathroom was decent. there was a notice attached by the becin regarding some procedures to was your hands. i didnt aware of that. there were six steps. from step when to six they instructed to wash your hand top to bottom. i just astonished that i have learned standard procedure to wash my hands when i was 28 years old. but i found it effective. do you think you follow the standard procedure to wash your hands ?

We do wash our hands specially before we eat. It is not the regular standard of washing like you are saying but, i can say that it is a routinary hand washing for us since we are used of using our hands for eating.
About the routine washing of the hands, we only used bathroom soap, wet our hands then spread the soap all over the hands, the palm, and then few massage on the hands and fingers and fingernails so that it is surely clean, and then rinse it clean with water.
I don't mind the military or doctor's way of washing hands, the doctors used to scrub their hands even more, takes them 5 to 10 minutes squeaky cleaning so that no bacteria is present that will infect their patients.

Does it take so much procedures just washing hands? I wash my hands the normal ways and does not follow ethics or procedures. As long as my hands come out clean after every wash I will be satisfied.

After taking a course in food safety and getting my certificication I am paranoid about washing my hands. I wash them, hand sanitize them and then lotion them. Although I am better with it now, I just do it first thing when I come home. After going to the bathroom. After popping a pimple. After messing with a scab. If the cat drools on me (GOD FORBID! D:) etc.
I don't wash them as "recommended" though. 30 seconds, work up a good lather, and really hot water. More like 20 seconds with a soap under cold/room temperature water.

Standard procedure? Apply soap, use hot water, lather, rub, rinse. There's a standard procedure?

I didn't know there was a standard procedure for washing hands. I just make sure that I wash my hands thoroughly before I eat every meal.

I have learned of the proper ways to wash hands when I was in high school. I never really followed that before but when I became a mom I started washing my hands from top to bottom. Before I only wash my hands by simply using soap and water at the hand part alone. I do not wash the upper part of my arm which should also be washed because you never know that some dirt and bacteria are in the upper part of your hand. Since I have a baby, I should always be clean before I touch him especially when I prepare his milk. Cleanliness is next to goodliness as the saying goes and I always feel better when my hands are clean.

I am 24 years old and I admit that I just learn how to wash my hands properly last year. It is important to prevent cross contamination and the effectiveness of handwashing. Most infections came from not washing hands properly.

Well I don't really know what is Standard procedure to wash hands.
But I like cleanliness very much.
I wash every time I am eating something or even when I am giving something to eat to someone else.
I wash my hand from my wrist to the edge of every finger.

i really am not sure whether that procedure of washing the hands properly is something everyone would like to follow. i mean, soaps are made to bubble and once that foamy water runs on your skin the effect of any soap's disinefecting properties isn't diminished. soaps were made for the use of the general population who are most of the time are not much informed with the how's of many things.

actually, in my daily hand washing, i don't follow a certain procedure. as long as I wash my hands very well paying attention with the nails and folds of the skin. But in the hospital especially in the operating room, it is a must that employees involve in surgery should really follow the procedure. this is to maintain aseptic technique.

If the steps are what I think they are, that include using the towel to turn off the faucet, then no. I lather, rince, dry. I'm not a food handler (other than what I cook and eat myself) so I don't bother with all the extra stuff some "authorities" put on other people.
They didn't say to use anti-bacterial soap, did they? If they did, the sources I have read said that that is the worse thing you can do - it is encouraging the growth of resistant bacteria, and it will be a matter of time when many bacterial diseases will not be able to be treated because of the mass-marketing of such products.

proper handwashing technique is taught to all nursing students early in their sophomore years if im not mistaken. its been practice esp. when they scrub for major cases where sterile technique is a must. but during their day to day life, i think nursing students often forget the basic steps. how ironic it seems

I was watching Oprah once and one of her guests was a medical expert who spoke at length about the importance of proper hand washing and the fact that the majority of us don't do it properly. She suggested (this sounds silly, I know) that we should take the same amount of time washing our hands as it takes to sing "Happy Birthday to You"; so we should all be standing at the hand basin singing a birthday song and ending up with very clean hands!

Yes I do. Not only before taking meals, each time I feel I have dirtied my hands and need washing. Sometime with plain water and sometime with soap or like thing whatsoever is felt necessary at that moment.
