Are you this disrespectful?

I live in an apartment complex that allows dogs. I've owned plenty of dogs in my life and I always cleaned up after my dog. The apartment complex has doggy stations all over the property that allows you to run into one no matter what entrance you come out of, and along the walk ways. However, this winter people have been so lazy that they've brought their dogs just outside our entrances and let them do their business. Not only have they been this disrespectful they have left their dog's droppings for all to see. Our entrance ways smell like dog urine and feces. It's sickening.
What's worse is that these people don't seem to care that their dog's excriments can cause serious diseases. I have two little ones and they cannot even step outside during the warm weather because all of our sitting areas are littered with poop! And I don't buy their excuse "Well, that's what maintenance is for". Are people that lazy? It's just sickening that these people even own pets because if they are this lazy, do they really care for their pet? I doubt it. I doubt they'd care for their children by this type of behavior.
And something even worse? These same people have let their dog poop and pee all throughout our apartment building inside. There are urine stains all over the stairs, entryways, and hallways. It's just sickening. Sad thing is, when we first moved in we didn't have this issue as badly. It seems to have grown worse over the last two years.
So, do you clean up after your dog when they go outside? What would you do in this situation?

Sounds that the apartment has no cleaner to clean the dog's feces and urine. I am not a pet lover and I believe it is a headache but with the diry and clean things, I would love to know if you have a cleaner for your apartment.
When I came over to my apartment, three year ago, then it was way too dirty. The reason, there was no cleaner appointed. Now, we have a cleaner and the commitee pays him money for his work. Now, this apartment is cleaner than ever!
So, instead of fighting you should have one cleaner which will have the duty of cleaning things.

We have two hired cleaners for our buildings but they just wipe down the laundry rooms, doors, and elevators doors, and vacuum each day. That's about it. Namaste-Anora

You are right to be worried about disease - a lot of dogs can be carriers for intestinal parasites that are zoonotic, meaning they can be transferred to humans. Young children and older adults are especially vulnerable. Some of these diseases are giardia, coccidia, roundworm, tapeworm, hookworm, leptospirosis (that is actually transferred through urine), and a lot of others. The pet doesn't even have to have clinical signs - they can carry it and pass it on without ever showing symptoms. I'm actually a veterinary technician and I have studied Parasitology, and it is not pretty. The best way to control these parasites? Have them dewormed and treated regularly at the vet and clean up after them immediately.
Since I am a veterinary technician, I would send flyers out to every tenant about zoonotic diseases. I would also pass them on to the management, and raise a complaint with them. If people are not taking their pets to the designated areas or not cleaning up after them, they may be breaking a term of their contract. This can result in a fine, or eviction, or other things. I'm sure that maintenance doesn't like cleaning it up, so they should take a stronger stand on this issue. Let them know that you want them to take a stronger stand.

I think I may just ask my vet the next time I'min for some brochures. Maybe that will scare them into cleaning up. Namaste-Anora

How RUDE! I can't believe these people actually think that "maintenance" is required to clean up after their dogs! It's not easy (or pleasant) to deal with having to take dogs out in the winter but a responsible pet owner does what is necessary for their pet. To think they allow their pets to relieve themselves in the hallways and stairways, rather than taking them outside, just proves how lazy these people are.
I would absolutely register a complaint with the landlord and/or building owner. I'd also be inclined to take photographs, especially inside the building. This is very much a health concern. I would hope the owner/landlord isn't aware of it yet because of he/she is, and is ignorning it, there are some bigger problems at hand.
Something these folks are also not considering is that they are running the risk of not being allowed to keep pets at all. There are so many apartment complexes where dogs are simply not permitted and this would seem like a case where the person responsible for the building could simply reach their breaking point.

I'm thinking that pictures may be a good idea as a record. Thanks for the response. Oh, and yes, our manager is aware of it but so far only newsletters have gone out threatening "If we catch you...", but not everyone can be caught unless you stand there all day long with a camera. Namaste-Anora

I don't live in an apartment but I have a house that I rent and I have one dog.. I let him out back to do his business and we have always cleaned up after him but lately when I started having more and more after school activities and sport I hired a pet waste removal service so that they clean up after my puppers for a certian amount. That way my yard is taken care of wether I have time to or not. I love my dog and my kids and I must make sure the environment for both is suitable. It's any responsible owners duty..
I think that these owners should have to pay an extra fee a month so that the complex can have extra maintaince there to take care of it. I know that is what I would do if I was the office manager at the apartment complex.

We pay 10 dollars a month in pet rent if we have a dog or cat. Plus there are security deposits put down. I would assume that 10 dollars a month from all of us is more then enough to pay for someone to come clean and detox the lawn. My problem is, why aren't these people able to just use a doggy bag and pick it up? Why do they have to let their dog go just outside the doors because you know, it's not that far to walk where the dog containers are at. Thanks for responding though, I do like the idea. This is just sick!, how could people be so irresponsible, i too had many dogs before, since we moved into apartments, i did not have any for i know maintaining it would be very difficult, both us and our pet would suffer, so i hope to get one only after buying a house of my own and i donno when that would happen...If you see anyone letting their dog do it in front of you, just blast them, i would do the same if i were you, you have the right to keep your surroundings clean and to let them realize their responsibilities

These people are not animal lovers. Animal lovers have no problem clweaning up after their pets and they would not subject their pets to such filth.
Gosh Anora, the stench in the hallways must be dreadful...I understand why pets are not allowed in apartments. I would never do something like that. You know it only takes one to do something like that then others will follow suit. it's just a shame we have this mentality...they didn't clean up, why should I?...
I shudder to think what their homes are like...I'd be calling the health inspectors I think.

I always clean up after my dog.
It's people like these that make landlords decide on a no pets policy.
I would be complaining and demanding that something be done about it.
There is no way I would be able to sit back calmly. I think I would probably sit in wait for the culprits and catch them red handed and report them!
I hope you manage to get something done about this soon.

Well, i love dogs and I have 2 pet dogs, love birds, fish, rabbits, and Iguana.. My mom loves taking good care of animals that's why we have so many pet at home.. Actually, we are not staying in an apartment.. It is really a house wherein there is really a place for our dogs to pee and poop.. Of course, no matter how we train our dogs where they should pee and poop sometimes they were not following my mom rules.. My mother always make sure that everything is clean in and outside of our home.. I am not really fun in cleaning the house since we have our helpers to do it for me.. But when my dogs mess my things or if our maids are very busy in the household chores I'm the one whose going to clean my dogs mess and taking bath with them.. Actually, i love taking bath with my two dogs because they love water and they also want to feel fresh and clean..Even in our neighborhood, they were not lazy like your neighborhood because everyday they really clean their area and even outside their property.. All of our neighborhood respect each other and care our environment..
Now that I've move on from other city, I'm living in an apartment wherein no pets are allowed in the building aside from fish.. But even though there's no pet in our area still candy wrappers, foods, etc are all found in the stairs and sometimes people were urinate in the fire exist area.. We already complained it in the admin but still people don't follow the rules.. I really don't like going in the fire exist because it really smell bad and even my 6 years old niece also don't like going in that place due to bad smell..
I guess people were just very lazy and hard headed.. they don't seem to care about others, they only care about their own selves.. I just hope that everything they had done will come back to them..

You do not really expect those irresponsible owners to come on here and admit what they are doing, do you? I sometimes think they give people a test to see if the are deaf so they will not hear their own dog barking all night, and a test to see if they are selfish and stupid so they will leave dog excrement all over the place and allow their dog to run off leash. I hope there is a special place in Hell reserved for dog owners and they have to slip and slide through the very mounds of dog crap that they have not cleaned up over their lifetime.
Maintenance is not for cleaning up private dog poop. I live in a condo and if they have to clean up after your dog, they charge you by the hour to clean up extra.

Hi Anora - We don't have a dog and don't live in an apartment building. However on my street we are surrounded by dog owners. And yes their owners allow them to use our front lawn as a toilet. My husband gets upset but I don't want to cause trouble because the both of us work full time and we're out of the house 5 days a week. I don't want something to "happen" when we're not there. You never know nowadays... In your case I think I would speak to the management of the building. They must know who are the dog owners in the building. There must be something in the rules or regulations of the complex to enforce better and more respectful behavior?

So far the only thing they've done is send out warning saying if the owners are caught they'll be fined $50 but you hvae to have a picture and catch them in the act. That's not always the case. We're starting a neighborhood watch though at the end of this month, so hopefully something will come of this meeting. Thanks for the suggestion and response. Namaste-Anora

If they have dogs, they should know how to clean up their dog's mess and be responsible. It so disgusting to leave their dog's poop there and aren't they ashamed of what they are doing?
I wonder why there are people like this, no sanitary discipline and considering that they are your neighbors too.
Sorry to hear that you are having a problem about this, but don't you have any one there to complain about the matter?

I don't like pets. Cause I know I'm lazy for cleaning jobs. So I can't bear this situation. If someone let their pets poop or pee by my side, I think I can't keep silence.

I'd find a group of people in your complex that feels as you do and then write a letter to management signing all of your names. The more signatures you have, the more effective it will be. Yes...people are that lazy. We are not allowed pets where I live. We shouldn't even have that problem. right? Still I see outsiders walking their dogs thru here and letting them go whereever and not bother to scoop up. Also tenents sneak in pets. As for management....they should not have to clean up after other people's dogs or kids! They are busy enough clearing snow, mowing the grounds, doing repairs in apts. etc. The sad thing is that if something is not done, they'll probably change the rules so that pets are not allowed at all. That'd be a shame for those that actually do take good care of their pets and clean up. Maybe you should also try to target the guilty ones when reporting it, if possible. I'm sure you pay a decent amount in rent and should not have to live under the conditions you describe! My step-son was blinded in one eye as a child from bacteria in dog feces. he had fallen and gotten some on his hand and did not wash it properly and it got in his eye. He was 4. It is a health issue for sure. You have every reason to complain and I hope you do.

Anora_Eldorath,
I will post a big sign that says "Warning! This passage way is being monitired with an installed CCTV. Any uncivic behavior and not cleaning after your doggie's poop along this walkway will be recorded and sent to the authorities! No exceptions!"
This is just outright uncivilized and unneighborly. I would certainly sound off if I ever were to witnessed it. I think if you can in addition to the sign really install a webcam and have the day's events recorded I think it will help a lot. Start with a dummy one if there is going to be a long wait for things.
Cheers.
