Coughing up a little blood :(

I'm a little scared because a few weeks ago, on and off, my lungs felt a little congested and sore and every so often I'd feel a little wheezy. But, it seemed to go away. It has come back briefly from time to time but just a couple days ago when rinsing out my mouth there was a little droplet of blood. I didn't think much of it at the time but it has happened twice more. It is just a little blood but each time a bit more. This morning my chest is sore again, the feeling you get when you are getting a chest cold or respiratory infection. I don't know what to think or what to do. It doesn't seem bad enough to go to the doctor but the little bit of blood worries me. Anybody ever have this happen to them before or have any suggestions?

Hi, I don't know if you have been to the doctor yet. I am a retired paramedic, and would like to extend to you a little advice, if you are having any kind of chest discomfort, and blood, you should see a doctor immediately. Even if you are not sure where it is comming from. You could have pneumonia, a pulmonary embolism, or any number of problems. I have recently had this problem, and did in fact have pneumonia, i wasn't coughing alot either. But i sure wouldnt wait. You absolutely need a chest x-ray. In my case, i was hospitalized for 2 days, released, placed on an antibiotic, that didnt cure the pneumonia, i stayed a little short of breath but didnt return to the doctor, a month later i was septic (infection spread through my blood)had a massive seizure, and was placed on life support. I remained in the hospital for 3 weeks. I'm sure not saying this will happen to you! I'm saying you should go to the doctor! Get well soon, Diana

You need to consult the doctor at this early stage, I think there is lungs problem, you should not neglect it.

So far today, much better! Haven't had any further episodes as of yet. My chest is much better today just a little bit sore, but barely. That is how it has been the past couple of weeks... one day I'm fine and another I'm a little wheezy. Weird!

it could be from irritation in the back of your throat from coughing or it could be something worse. When was the last time you had a TB test? I do not mean to scare you I just think you need to get to a doctor.

Hi teapotmommommerced - I haven't had any further incidence of it since posting this discussion, thank goodness. But, if it happens again I've decided I will definitely make myself a doctor's appointment to have it checked out. Better safe than sorry, right?!

Is it possible the blood is coming from you gums after brushing your teeth? Or does it come up when coughing? If you feel you have something started, it wouldn't hurt to go to the doctor to easy your mind, one can worry themselves sick, or avoid going to the doctor because they are scared. If you are coughing real hard that sometimes can cause the blood. And since the amount of blood is increasing each time, it might not be a bad idea to have it checked out.

Are you sure the blood isn't from the gums when you brush your teeth? If you think you have coughed up blood, it does not sound like much. Usually if you cough up about 1/2 cup or more then it needs to be checked. Did you go to your doctor when you first had your congestion? I've had bronchitis and also pneumonia so you might have some of that. If you are often feeling congested and have wheezing or pain, I would suggest seeing a doctor. It may be nothing but for your peace of mind that it isn't something serious...

Hi jillmalitz - No, it definitely is not my gums. You are right... there hasn't been much blood at all, just a little bit but enough to make me think "Hey... what's goin' on?!" I haven't been coughing much at all, just mainly having chest congestion. So far today I'm feeling quite a bit better but then again that is how it's been with this thing... I'll be feeling fine and then a few days later my chest starts hurting again like I'm getting an upper respiratory infection or something, might see a little blood and then the next day or so I start feeling fine again, but then it comes back again. Weird, I know!

I know I really should see a doctor, especially if it continues or gets any worse. I just hate having to dish out the money right now since I have no health insurance. It is really frustrating. I've been without it for about 8 months now due to losing my job because of my other health issue. :( Thanks for your help & concern littleowl. I really appreciate it. I'll let you know what happens. Take care.

Have you been coughing a lot? Sometimes that's the cause of a bit of blood showing. A little bit might not be serious but it is a good idea to see your doctor anyway. I hope you get better soon!

No, I haven't been coughing much at all actually. My chest/lungs are just a little sore like I am getting a respiratory infection. But, it has been coming and going over the last few weeks. The blood only showed up the past couple of days. I guess one reason it is worrying me more is because about 10 years ago I was in the hospital for heart palpatations and while there the doctors diagnosed me with sarcoidosis of the lungs. However, I had absolutely no symptoms so I did not need any treatment. I'm just wondering if maybe the sarcoid is reappearing and I'm actually starting to get symptoms of it. I sure hope not because there is no cure. I just hope it is a chest cold.

koalatbs I have been there an done that and what you might'have is called walking pneumonia. yes you need to see your doctor because'spitting up a little blood means a virus has been'giving' your lungs a bad time and you need some medical help. see your'doctor so you can get looked at and giventhe proper medications for it. when I was finally diagnosed my doctor said that was the first symptom coughing up just a little blood.

I've done that before, had a bad cold, with alot of chest congestion, it made me cough so much, that my chest was sore, I started coughing up blood too, so I went to the doctor, found out I had bronchitis, and had to be put on antibiotics. Even tho, it may not seem to be bad enough to go to the doctor, I would go anyway, especially if there is blood coming up, you may be getting some kind of infection, and need to be put on medicine, you should do it before it gets worse.

I have barely had any coughing at all, just occasionally... maybe a few times a day. That is what is kind of weird about it. It seems to be ok one day then bother me the next. It is mainly chest congestion, but so far today I feel much better, just a little sore when I breath, but barely.

Well thats one reason why I would go to the doctor, to see what's going on, to see why you feel good one day and the next you don't, and why your chest feels congested.

Time to go to the Doctor and get this checked out. it could be very serious or nothing at all but if it is serious, the early you get treatment the better. Fear is your enemy here.

I know I should savypat. I just hate spending the money but I know it is better to be safe than sorry. I'm going to wait until tomorrow and see what happens, if it goes away or gets worse. If it gets worse by tomorrow I'll definitely go. No health insurance, unfortunately, makes one wait and ponder things a little more before rushing off to the doctor. :(

I don't want to scare you but don't wait, go to Emergency room or free clinic if you have to. I don't know where you are or what is available. But you've fooled withthis thing long enough. If nothing else go on line and see what the internet has to say, there are some good medical sites on there.

Hi koalatbs, So you are coughing blood up , or it is only when you rinse your mouth out? If you are coughing it up , even a little bit . I think you should tell your doctor soon! If it was only when you were rinsing your mouth . It sounds like it might just be your gums bleeding . Since you are not feeling well I think its a good idea to go in and get checked out, and tell the doctor everything . I'm sending you good vibes koalatbs! Get well soon!

Thanks beachstarz - It is definitely not my gums bleeding. I can tell it is coming either from the back of my throat or lungs. If it happens again or if my chest feels any worse I guess I'll have to resort to going to see a doctor. I hate to wait but I have not health insurance at the moment so money is an issue. I don't like putting important things like my health on a back burner because of money issues. Even more important is being able to go back to see a specialist for my possible MS. I've been without insurance now for about 8 months and it really sucks. :( Thanks for your "good vibes"! Really appreciate it. :)

Cripes woman, get yourself to the doctor, immediately if not sooner. There's no such thing as a mild chest infection, they can turn nasty very quickly. You probably have pneumonia. You would not want either of your lungs collapsing on you would you? Your body is trying to tell you in several ways that it is not well...please listen to it. I really can't understand why you haven't listened. GO NOW!

To me, I'd be off to the doctor right away but then I live in Canada where there is no charge to see a doctor.... At any rate, I read where you may have MS and also where you said about the sarcoidosis.... With the reality of these two conditions, I would certainly be heading to the doctor... Don't put a price on your health! HUGS ~Heavens~

i've had it happen when i coughed too much-they said i broke a vessel in my lung somehow-it even showed up on the x-ray. but it could be anything from that,to an infected lining,to a number of other things causing it.i would definetly get it checked out if the amount of blood is increasing also.

I know it is late been lost. Ok have you been coughing alot. As if you cough alot then yes you will get a little blood and it from breaking blood cells in stomach. But if not you mite want to go see Dr. Unless you had brushed your teeth and I don't think so as you didn't say you had just got done brushing your teeth. So give the Dr. a call and talk to a nurse and she can deside if you should go in. Your friend onlydia

Hi Jill. I hope by this time you have already seen a doctor. The fact that you are sure that the blood is not coming from your gums but from inside you is a bit scary. It is better to see a doctor so that you'll get the advice that you need. This worries me and I noticed that you haven't commented to the rest of the responses. Are you ok? I checked your profile page and it says that your last log in was 12 hours ago...not long...hope you are doing well. Take care.
