Would you paint your house with glaring and bold colors ?

While admiring a freshly painted house in a nice tinge of lemon yellow, I remembered some of the very bright and some very glaring, gaudy colors that people choose to paint the external facia of thier houses with. One of them in a very glaring combination of purple and another was in combination of black and white.
It's totally to do with our individual choices though and what may be glaring to some is very attractive to another.
What are the color choices/shades that you would consider glaring or gaudy and would not consider using when it comes to painting your house ?

This came in timely with our neighbour deciding to paint his house a flourescent greenish hue! Yesterday, as I was washing my hand and wondering at his choice, I ended up washing my hands more.
Good for me! I agree it comes down to personal choices and we humans have this varied taste nodules that make them distinctive. I do not have any problem with that except for the fact that the inmates might suffer health hazards in tropical summer. The amount of heat that purple would absorb is way above some lighter colors would! And the more electricity consumption, more wastage of power to cool down the heating affect. This, I would totally blame on the lack of consciousness of the people.
If you ask me, inspite of the go green thing, I love lighter shades. More light, more good it is. White would be the best, anytime. But since it gets difficult to maintain I can settle for light lemon or lighter olive shades.

Washed your hands again on seeing the fluorscent green.
I would be bewildered really.
That's a great point you have shared there about the heat absorption of darker colors.
Lighter shades are what i prefer as well. The dark purple one which i had seen recently got me wondering, what made the person choose and are they really not bothered about how it affects the neighbourhood or what people might think ?
Lack of conciousness i'm sure it must be as you have rightly put it.

Wanting to be different and attract attention may be ok, but when neighbours start to was thier hands twice on seeing on seeing the colors, some message must get across to them. Maybe the message is too subtle and needs to be stronger.
Some of the choices can be a real eyesore to others around. But yet they seem oblivious...

The choice of colors and subsequently deciding on darker shades is not really lack of consciousness but just a matter of choice. Some people like darker shades and they go for it just because they love it! May be the endeavor to get different counts but what a way to show your exclusiveness!

Let me confess I too dislike gaudy and bold colours on the out walls of a house. The house feels repulsive to me, if I happen to see any such house. I also wonder how come those house owners dare to go for bright shining dark colours. Dark purple or red colour in fact observe the heat and does not do any good to the house, in terms of temperature control and they look like an eye-sore. I would never like to paint my own house in dark colours. I even do not like dark colours being used in my rooms. I prefer light and soothing colour for my house.

I fail to understand the choice of those people, who go for dark colours.

in the area where i live, all the external paint of the houses are similar... we are not allowed to change it by the council and body corporate to preserve the market value of the houses in the area... just imagine if we buy a house in the area where every house have a different color of paint... i wouldn't want to buy it as i know that it will be very hard for me to sell it in the future... take care and have a nice day...

I wouldn't be adverse to painting a house in bright colours, but it would mainly come down to my surrounding area and neighbours most of all. I'm all for individuality, but there's definitely a fine line between chic and garish at times. lol. The style of the house structure can play a major part too. In my home state, there are many timber built houses with sweeping verandah's etc. This building style looks great in lemons, purples and other bright colours. But a standard brick and tile home may not be anywhere near as suitable for the same! Personally I would far prefer to be creative with paint INSIDE the house rather than outside it. I'll differentiate the outside with my garden instead! And colours I like? I'm open to most things really, as long as it's not too bright like a fluorescent tone or something! lol.

It does have a lot to do with the type of house. The neighbourhood too becomes an important criteria in the selection.
The fluorscent tone seems glaring an idea though. The purple i was referring to was on a standard brick house. It was noticeable from quite a distance and most of the times evoked negative reactions from people.
Thanks James.

I think the first thing to consider is MY personal taste and not my neighbors' taste. Thank God, I'm not a big neon fan!
I do want a yellow house or a lime green house all because it makes my house unique and its easier to find. Say, I have relatives coming from abroad or the south, they can just tell the name of the subdivision and ask where the lime green or yellow house is.hehehe

My house is painted a light shade of lemon yellow and it happens to be one of my favourite colours for the house. I would not like my house to be painted in any dark colour. Everyone's choice is different and luckily everyone at my home likes the light colours only.

Personally I wanted to paint our house we live in now a shade of Bluish purple, and my husband is against it. He is thinking that it would make it stand out too much and personally he is not for that. There is no way I could do mine Orange, Green, Pink, Bright Yellow or a noticeable purple unless my neighbors did not mind me painting it that color. As I hate any shade of Green for a house that is definately out for sure. Right now we cannot afford to consider painting the outside of our house, but in time I still would like a Bluish purple for sure.

It is down to personal taste. I wouldn't paint my home in gaudy colours just for the sake of it. I think I'd have to consider what the neighbours would think, because it's not really fair to paint something they'll hate as they'll have to look at it too.
I know someone who deliberately painted their wheelie bin in purple with orange spots because she hated her neighbours and wanted to irritate them. Rather petty in my opinion!

I have seen a house that is all purple. It does get your attention though.
I don't know if I would have the house painted in bold and bright colors. Like what they said, it all comes down to personal taste and individuality. Just as long as I don't get to see it every day, I am fine with what other people decide to do with their own homes.

The first time we painted our own apartment, that was several decades ago, we paint our sitting room wall as bright yellow, a bit italian touch. My relatives and friends felt shocked when seeing the color, but i enjoy the masterpiece very much. Since then we have moved several times, never that color any more, but pale green, light yellow, or just cream white. I guess the choice of color preference has a lot to do with the inner feeling, your self esteem, your choice of life style, etc.
