boat loader --grub

I am new to linux operating system .Can anyone tell me more about grub boot loader? Recently i encounter a fatal error i.e. grub not install , while trying to install ubuntu at just installation is at 94%.I have tried all option to install grub without any success .How to install grub ? What are stages of grub ? I need a discussion .Thanks.

GRUB stands for Grand Unified Bootloader.It is a menu displaying program which displays the current OS's installed on your PC.Do you have Windows Vista?Was the Ubuntu CD you used scratched??

No I have dual boot with win xp .You have not check CD , will check it .

I ever install a grub software under windows. It is just a software package to copy onto the hard disk partition, and set the boot partition, the grub will boot the operating system. You can try it!

I have never encountered with this kind of prob when I install ubuntu,grub and lilo are both OK.Everytime I ust put my ubuntu cd in the drive and the duo system is easily installed..hope you can find a situation sooner..
