I live in a city and I do not have a backyard, or even a porch to garden with. I have a fire escape, but I am unsure if we are allowed to put plants on it. I think I may put things that grow easily on a vine out there - just a few. The only thing I can think of that would be appropriate would be green beans. Cucumbers would be too big, in case they fall. Does anyone out there have any suggestions? Also, what are good plants that don't require a lot of space or light? I only have three windows, so I don't have much window sill space. What plants will grow well on a window sill? I'd love to hear any suggestions or personal stories! Thanks!
Also - I plan on getting the chia herb garden. I had that when I was 10 and I never watered them and I still managed to get fresh herbs.

Last summer my family and I did a few small pepper plants in our windows. They worked out really well. We enjoyed peppers all summer long. I have tried tomatoes but they dont do so well. Seems like they need more sun than the window can provide. I have also done a window herb garden and that turned out very well. Oregano and chives were my best growers.

I was just reading this! http://www.stretcher.com/stories/960520a.cfm
It's about gardening in hanging baskets. It's mostly about flowers, but why couldn't you hang some containers to grow smaller things? Lettuce, radishes and the like should do well in hanging containers indoors. Is there any way you could hang something outside, too?
