What would you do if you find your door open when you return home?

Hi friends... did you face this situation anytime? I faced this today evening when i was back to home from my work. From the last three days i was staying alone as my parents were out of city for some work. As last two days were weekends, i stayed at home only and i didn't go anywhere. But today i had to go to my work. When i was back after my work i was shocked to see that my door was open. I thought that thieves entered into my home. But it was not the thieves who opened the door, but it is my cousin. I gave him the duplicate keys long back when i was alone that time as he stayed along with me. I forgot about that one. He came home today in the afternoon and found the door locked. So he opened it with the duplicate keys i gave him last time. I relaxed after seeing him in the TV room. Did you face this situation anytime?

If i ever found my door opened. My first thought would be that someone of my family is at home. But then i would think about more possibilities and get scared. Even though most part of the times when they're opened it's because the thieves already stole what they wanted and left, so they probably made a mess, got what they wanted and left. So i would just wait for a little while to see if someone gets out and if they don't i would just walk in and see what happened.
Another possibility is to call your own house, as the phone rings the people inside would get scared and leave, and if someone of your family is home they'll answer and you can stop wondering what's inside.

Of course at first I will be shocked because the door is open. And I will immediately think that thieves broke in. But I will be very careful because they might still be inside. So I guess I will leave the door open after I enter to escape in case I meet the thieves. And you are lucky because it was just your cousin who went to your house. I have never experienced going home with the door open and I guess I will really feel nervous if that happens so I hope that won't happen ever.

I came home once when the door was left open and it turns out my sister was the last one to go out and she must have been hurry because she claimed to shut the door but it did not shut. I am glad no one took the opportunity to go in and steal stuff and she got grounded for a couple of weeks, since she did not put the burglar alarm on either.

that has never happen to me but I think I would start freaking out and calling people. Probably even the cops to come and check it out and go to a neighbors house until they checked it out. I would beat my cousin for doing that to me.

Wow, that is a scary thing to come home to. I have not experienced this yet, thank goodness.
I'm not sure what I would do first, maybe stand in front of the open door for a little bit, trying to hear if anyone is still there, and once the coast is clear, I think I would check to see if my cat was still in the house. (Indoor cat)
Check to see if anything is stolen, maybe call out, AFTER I get a weapon and attempt to go upstairs. Once everything seems safe, then I would most likely call the cops.

Lol, no, I have not got into such situation though I have found my house door open many times but I was not surprised at all because I have given a duplicate key to my wife. When we go out together and come back we never found our door open.

If I find my door open when return home, my first thought is "maybe my Dad or Mum is at home" so I will called them at the door,if no one answered me form the house,my next guess "maybe my house was robbed",so I won't enter my house, this situation will make me frightened, and thieves are always bad guys, so I will ask my neighbour or friend to go to my house with me....In a word, I won't go inside alone.....

i am renting an apartment with my brother, so whenever i get home and see the lights on, it's only him i think of. But there's this one time when my brother told me he will spend the night on his friend's house because of their project so i was expecting that i'll be alone that night. However, when i came home from work, I found out that the lights were left on and the door was not locked! I was very nervous to enter the apartment since i've no idea who's inside. Thankfully, my brother greeted me upstairs and told me that they cancelled their plans for the night, and that's the only time i relaxed. But i was really frightened by the thought that other people were inside the house and might do something bad to me. I think it's just natural to be frightened when you unexpectedly found something that you're not supposed to see.

Hi swaroopmsc. I never face this situation before and I hope I won't face it in the future. First step that I'll make if I'm in this situation, I will call somebody who knows me. Then I will enter my house and find the problem. Just play cool. f there is a thieve just smile at him and let him do what he want to do.

Well sometimes I found my door open but there is always someone at my place.
I think once or twice when I returned from my job my mom was surprised because door was open and I directly went to my bedroom quietly.
When she heard some voice from my bedroom she slowly checked who is there and was surprised after finding me there.

No, I have never met this before. When my door is open, that means my husband is at home.

It happened to me recently in my apartment.
I was returning from a function with some of my cousins when I was startled to see the front door wide open. My heart skipped beating for a second as I walked in.
To my relief I found it was the cable TV man.
I had ordered for the cables to be repaired, and left the spare key with the caretaker two days ago, and completely forgotten about it.
