When you are sick, do you go to work?

When I worked for a company, I never wanted to call in sick. I would go to work even when I was sick. My husband is the same way now. In fact, he went to work sick last week and they sent him home. When he went to the doctor, he had walking pneumonia. Let's face it, some companies just hate for you to call in sick. But when you think about it, is it better for your company for you to come to work even if you are sick, or is it better for you to stay home so that you will not spread the illness to your co-workers? Do you go to work sick or do you stay home? Is your company understanding when you cannot come to work?

oh well, i always go to work sick (I mean easy sickness like headaches, or cold, or smth. like that), but I try to be isolated as much as i can, not to spread it.
But if they can manage without me, I try to stay home or get the work done from home...
Productivity would be compromised if let's say I go to work, get someone sick and it'll spread, and let's face it, you work slower and make more mistakes if you aren't concentrating on it. But my employee understands and pays me even if I'm at home. it's his fault for my illness sometimes, no?

It's timing that I read your post...right now I am sick and have been absent for 2 days at work, I did not really call but sent a message to my boss I am sick..(It's not a big company...just an average dental clinic), my boss seems to be understanding because she didn't even comment if I'm telling the truth or what...My reason for not going to work even if I'm sick is because I don't want to worsen my condition (I have a terrible sore throat and have no voice because of the irritation and infection) I cough a bit, so it means I have a virus with me, don't want to spread the illness to my co-workers and patients as well. I also don't want to work like a mute...they might even laugh at me.LoL!(^_^)

Unless I am running a fever, vomiting, or on the toilet all the time, I am going to work. IF I have a cold, I try to make sure that I cover my mouth when I cough or sneeze and wash my hands often to avoid spreading my germs to others. My clients areall pretty understanding if I am sick and cannot go to work that day, but I try to keep a good work ethic and be therewhen I am scheduled to be.

Hi Toofancy.
As much as I don't want to miss work, I usually stay home whenever I am sick...reason is I don't want others to catch it. I make sure that they could reach me through phone, email or skype if there's anything they need. But if there is something important that requires my presence, then I would have to go to work.

Hi,there, actually,i ask for leave little time no matter when i'm still a student or i'm working now.Generally,i won't ask for leave because of light sickness,i think i can bear it and continue to work. But if i get really heavy sick,i have to ask for leave, then i will . Of course,it depens on the boss,if the boss is a good person and kindly to employee,i will stick on working even when i'm ill.But if the boss is not so kind,i will ask for leave without hesitation.

I dont go to work when I'm sick. I call in sick, and rest at home. if i do have to go to complete an important task, i return early. i've noticed that in the past whenever i have gone to work when sick, i've had to remain absent for more number of days to recover. my company understands, as they'd rather not have a sick person on their premises.

I am glad that you work for an understanding company. I wish all companies were more sympathetic with their sick employees. Because as you say, if you are sick, you are sick. Unfortunately, some companies could care less and just want you there, producing, no matter what. Thanks for your response!

If it is just a simple cold and I have something important to do in the office, I still go to work. However ,if I feel that my body is telling me that I REALLY have to rest, I just call my boss and tell her I really can't make it. My job is pretty flexible and if there's a task assigned to me, we try to work around it. The way my boss thinks is that it is better to rest than go to work and get all the more weak and sick.Thank God, I do not get sick at once (KNOCK ON WOOD!). I take lots of liquids and I always pray to God to give me the strength and stamina to do what I have to do everyday.

hello toofancy :-) well i hate missing work so i guess i just take a day off from work when i am really really sick and also when i am extremely tired. well lucky for me, my boss is understanding enough that he would allow his employees to get enough rest when they are sick. to avoid absences and consuming my sick leaves, i take care of my health and take multivitamins, i don't abuse my body.

It depends on the work situation. I was thinking that it was unintelligent to work if one is not feeling well because he will be productive being in the state of health. But when I worked with a very demanding company and work responsibilities, I forgot about thinking sick at all. I have to feel well all the time to meet the demands. I didn't last there for long though.

If i am sick,I will call for a leave to my company and don't go to work.I believe if you go to work with a sickness, you cann't work well.So stayying home for rest is much better.

I am working in a biological lab.Sometimes my reasearch is hard and everything is running on the line,so I have to work on it if I am still slive;Sometimes my work is easy and it is flexible, then I will rest and take care myself. We must recognize that health is important for our life.If my condition is not suitable for work and if there is no required assigment that need me to deal with,I will wait until I am getting well.

I hate calling in sick! I guess maybe it is because I love my job, I always go to work when I am sick, but then I end up getting my employees sick, so I know I should stay home but do not usually do that.

Your work ethic sounds like mine. I always hated calling in sick, too. Illnesses are usually passed around at work, just like they are passed around at home. Somebody is always coming to work sick because they don't want to call in! Thanks for responding.

depends on how ill i am.if i'm having breathing problem or wiping my nose every minute, yea i'm staying home.
most places here go so far as to basically threaten your job if you call out,but yet when you show up coughing and sneezing, they'll work you til a customer complains about having a sick employee.you would think they'd want you to stay home rather than expose everyone to it,but often that's not the case

I am unemployed now, but when I was working I was a really faithful employee. I would go to work sick as well. The only times that I took time from work because of illness, was when I winded up in the hospital. I did have the flu last year and had all intentions of going to work. My husband said NO YOU ARE NOT!!!!!, but actually the next morning, I was so sick I couldn't get out of bed, but I bet if I could, I would have gone to work, and they probably would have sent me home.

When I worked for a company, I never wanted go call in sick either unless I was like really sick to get up from the bed otherwise, I would still go to work. When I get sick, I don't like to sleep on the bed and waste a day, I would rather do some stuff that I could handle. I don't get sick easy anyway. Not complaining.

If I'm not so ill that I cannot function I do come to work. I usually don't call in sick until I'm so bad that I wouldn't be able to see the computer screen. However I do understand that some people who come to work when they're ill put others in harms' way. I work for a company which understands to a certain extent - no one takes advantage of the system although we don't have an official policy on sick days. I hope your husband is feeling better now.

No, I prefer not go to work if I got sick, especially I may spread the illness in my company.
I suffered back pain two years ago, as back pain won't affect co-workers at work, so I would go to work when I was desperately painful. However, one day my boss came to my desk and told me I should go back home and took some rest. As I was so moody that day, my boss just thought it was not good to have a moody guy standing at the corner^.^
