Should illegal immigrants be entitled to social security benefits in the U.S.?

I've read that the Senate has passed a bill allowing social security benefits for illegal immigrants. This doesn't seem right to me. After all, the social security system is already running out of money, and people who have paid into it all their working lives are at risk for not being able to collect from it in future years. The retirement age has been raised to help alleviate the problem, and benefits are kept trimmed to the bone for the people who need them the most. I'm not understanding why our government would want to give the money our senior citizens need so desperately to people who aren't citizens of our country. What do you think?

my thing is if they know they are illegal and know the address to send the check. drive over to the house pick their as$ up, send them back. they are "ILLEGAL" immegrants. meaning everything that they do here has no bearing. even if the employer did pay social security on them, sorry charlie, you're here "ILLEGALLY". no money for you.

I loved your comment about being able to send them back when they know their address. That's funny but oh, so true! In my experience, employers don't pay any taxes on them at all and don't withhold anything, so why should they be entitled to receive something they didn't pay in in the first place?

There's more of our taxpayer's money going to waste. I personally believe this is ridiculous. Why give them benefits they haven't paid any dues towards? That seems outrageous to me. Now, i'm going to be furious the rest of the night over this. Good dinner topic.

The system is not as "flawed" as one would think, reading such books as "With No Apologies" by former Senator Barry Goldwater, Sr., or "The Creature from Jekyll Island", not to mention perusing the archives of the Council on Foreign Relations--clearly shows that the long-term elitist plans of globalizing government, economics, and military (and more) requires the ultimate destruction of the American infrastructure and the crash of its dollar. I think that this is just crazy. If they are not in this country the legal way they should not be entitled to anything at all. They should be sent back, and only be able to come back if they do it the right way. I have no problem with people coming here as long as they do it the right way.

I certainly agree with that. Breaking the law by entering the country illegally shouldn't qualify them for any benefits. Thanks for your comments!

And what idiot decided that if you're ILLEGAL pregnant mother gives birth to you.......that YOU automatically become an AMERICAN CITIZEN??? COMMON SENSE seems to be getting LEFT AT THE DOOR. What kind of idiot LEGAL CITIZENS are we becoming???

This happens in the UK all the time, yet we are all in recession, yet they can still give money out to people who have not worked or even lived here for it.

I am a voting tax payer & US born, we need to send this question to our new president! Did you know that he has an Aunt who is an illegal immigrant? That might have a bit to do with it. I was looking so forward to retiring at 63 & spend quality time with my 2 grandsons, so much for that, I now have to wait until 65 & then might not get much SSI due to the very fact it won't be there. It scares me to think what this country has become & the direction is still downhill! My husband of 20 years is not a US citizen, resident alien from the UK. He pays taxes like everyone else but, he has no say in where it goes, cannot vote, but, to become a citizen he must DENOUNCE his country. He refuses to!. Doesn't ILLEGAL still mean....not legal, contrary to law, prohibited? {websters} Lets all send a dictionary to the government.

Personally I would think that they would save this for people who are legal citizena here who have gotten past their Visas. But you never know what the real thoughts behind this type of thinking are. Since they do keep on raising the age before retirement and at the same time telling us that this money might not be there when we retire anyways, or most people having to work while getting this as well just to make ends meet, I would think they would make this harder for people to qualify in getting than easier. But you never know.

They shouuld not receive Social Security. I beleive that there is a treaty that would allow us to do that. It is part of the world governmnet movement. Under the treaty if you are an american citizen and work in Mexico, which is illeagal, you could count your working years in the US toward your Mixican Pension. You could receive either the Mexican pension or SS but not both. This owuld make things fair and spread the wealth around.

I do believe that you reap what you sow. If you contribute money to Social Security when you were working, then you reap the benefits of doing that. If not, then why expect something from an agency that you did not even bother to contribute to when you were earning money?

I am against illegal immigrants getting benefits of any kind. If they want to come to our country, tht is fine, just do it legally. I just cannot grasp the concept of intentionally giving benefits to those who are here ILLEGALLY, doesn't the word "illegal" mean soething? We work hard and pay in to Social Security and Disability so it is available when we need it, I have never understood why our goernment thinks they should just give it to people who are not even legal residents.

I don't think illegal immigrants should be allowed to receive social security, but that is not the only thing they receive from the government. If they are not here legally then they should not receive any benefits from the government. There are to many U.S. citizens who can't get half of the help from the government that illegal immigrants get. It is unfair to the people who have paid into the social security system.

As far as I am concerned. The money we have put away for Social Security should be ours. If they want the illegals immigrants to have Social security, then they should start a separate area for them, and not use what all the others have put away. It just isn't right. We won't be able to retire the way it is, and with funds be allocated everywhere and to anyone, there won't be any if we are ever able to claim S&S

no, not at all. when they are illegal, they don't belong to the USA until USA has accepted them. so question of social security and other benefits should not be made available to illegal immigrants

Could you please give a reference of what exactly you read because I think there must be some kind of misunderstanding. Illegal immigrants do not have social security numbers given to them by the social security system for the simple fact that they are illegal. So how would it be possible to think that they would be receiving social security benefits?

In the UK they claim as "asylum seekers" "escaping" some "atrocity" in a country they've never been to in their lives. They then bypass ALL the social security checks that us dumb taxpayers have to go to to get a brass farthing. Right now there's illegal immigrants in my country whooping it up in $6 million mansions because they have a "right" to housing. Yeah. They have a right to plasma TVs and new cars, too. Seems it's one rule for them and another for us. Mark my words, you'll see Tony Blair's stamp on this latest mandate somewhere ... him and that Blair witch project of a wife of his ... no they should not.i'm sorry if they're gonna lose it if they paid in,but they are breaking the law being here in the first place, and they knew that when they got here. i can't pick what laws i choose to obey, and neither should they.

There are so many inaccuracies in this discussion that I felt it should be revisited. I don't know if any of the responders are still around today but if they are I hope they will see this. The senate did NOT pass a bill giving illegals social security benefits. If there is information further than my research, I would wish that someone would make us aware of it. You might want to read what Snopes had to say: http://www.snopes.com/politics/socialsecurity/illegal.asp http://www.snopes.com/politics/immigration/socialsecurity.asp

No, I don't think this is fair at all. Another thing that pisses me off is that today I went to apply for emergency medicaid for my step-daughter, because everyone told me to do that for our situation...and when I brought it up at DSS today they told me emergency medicaid is for illegal immigrants who end up having a baby here or lose a limb and can't pay for it. So they can get that, but people who actually need help from the state can't get the help? That's a bunch of bs.

If they are illegal then why should they be entitled to anything?!?! Doesnt make much sense to me. I understand however that ALOT of the illegal immigrants are doing jobs alot of people from here would not and do not want to do but with so many people being out of work and out of their homes, cars, etc......let us attempt at having those jobs....? Let the pople here, from here, at least be offered them? Even if some of them only do them until we can get back on our feet? There are tons of people who could use that money to survive here. IMO.
