Today while I was in the grocery store, I saw angel food cakes and thought I would love to have some smothered in fruit cocktail and whipped cream. As I ventured around the store looking for the cans of fruit, I spotted ripe, juicy red strawberries!..YUM! This time of year, they would be hothouse or imported. But who cares!..SO instead, I got the strawberries!...I love to crush them up and let them sit in the fridge with a little sugar until it forms a nice syrup. Then pour it over the angel food cake and top with whipped cream...(light)
Others prefer however to use biscuits or white cake...
What do you prefer to spoon your strawberries over? Icecream is good too!

hello sandymay
i love those strawberry shortcakes that you found in the grocery store today. i haven't seen any of them yet this year. i have to go grocery shopping this coming Friday, so i imagine that i will be seeing them then. lol and that is what that i also do with the strawberries that i bring home from the store as well. i clean the strawberries and then slice them and put some sugar on them and sit them in the fridge and let them produce the syrup. they are so good to eat like that. and i also like either pound cake or angel food cake to spoon my delicious strawberries over, and of course i have to have the Cool Whip on the top of all of it. yum. enjoy the strawberries that you got at the store today!
take care and have a beautiful afternoon.

I absolutely love strawberry shortcake! We always get the little angel food cakes with that are shaped like little bowls. They have the middle cut down which is perfect for holding the strawberries! We do the same as you put them in sugar and let them set for a while then serve with whipped cream oh my goodness making me hungry!! We always have our first ones on my mom's birthday which is in June.

I have made them with the little angel food cakes you are talking about and I have made them with actual shortcakes that you make up. I don't crush my strawberries though. I simply slice them up. I think they look prettier that way. I put sugar on them and let them sit for a little bit to make a syrup too. I like them over vanilla ice cream too, but really I just prefer the strawberries plain.

My boyfriend and I love to eat fruit. Period. We frequently go to the market and pick up mangoes, strawberries, black berries, apples, and blood oranges - we love those!
My all time favorite thing to do with strawberries would have to be to cover them in chocolate. If I can't do that, I like to make jello with strawberry chunks in it. And in third place I would have to say PUTTING THEM IN OR ON PANCAKES.
Oh man, now I am hungry. Thanks a lot!

I absolutely LOVE strawberry shortcake. I'm like you, I like to crush a few, put sugar on them and let them sit for awhile. They are nice and sweet that way. I think strawberries without sugar is just not as good. I prefer angel food cake or a white cake for my strawberry shortcake. I can eat it with or without whipped cream - good either way! I really don't care for strawberries on ice cream however. Spring is coming if there are fresh strawberries in the store! YUM!!

I haven't had strawberry shortcake for a very long time now but you've definitely got me thinking about going down that path again! I think once we entered 2009 I decided that I was going to cut down on the sweet things so I guess I'm focusing on fitness this year! Anyway, I still love indulge on the odd occasion. Andrew

We love to spoon our crushed strawberries over homemade hot oatmeal waffles, and top that off with whip cream. Or you can take the strawberries and put them in a blender with a little milk and then add ice cream and have a strawberry shake.
Mmmm, Mmmm Good! End of June beginning of July is strawberry picking time here in Wisconsin.

I usually use the little store bought angel food cakes, too. I do the same as you. Put sugar on them, let them sit in the fridge, and then put them on the angel food cakes and top with cool whip. Strawberry shortcakes are one dessert I have always loved, and will never get tired of.
