learning language as a hobby is very interesting, but as a task is quite boring and oppressed. i have learned English for more than 8 years, but still not vety satisfied, and now i have begun learning Japnese, as a interest, i like japan very much, because of its cartoon and movies, not others, so i plan to leran it by myself. fighting......if you have a interest in learning language, just do it.

Sounds like a jack of all trade master of none. I learn english in school but become proficient in chinese when I mix around with many chinese friends. I speak my national language and my local dialects but communicate with others in either english or chinese. I did some french language course in college but is not very good at it cos can't practice it when there are nobody to talk to.

I have a "plan" sort of like this. I'm fluent in English (as it's my native language), but I'm learning Japanese right now (and I have been for about 4-5 years now), and I plan on learning Russian later on, next year in school. So, it's sort of a similar plan as you.
Good luck with learning all of those languages! I'm sure with the right amount of commitment and practice, you'll be able to do it!

I'm fluent in English as it's my native language. I'm ok in Spanish as I had three years of it, and I did take Russian but having no one to practice with I'm very bad. I do also know sign language as my husband has a hearing loss that is progressive so we've both been learning.
Currently though my husband and are learning Manderin and Japanese. My husband speaks fluent English, German, Spanish, and much more Japanese then I can speak.

In my view, master one language is really important for us. Now English is widely used, many many people could speak English. I agree with you that Japaness is the second important language you should master. I've ever learned this language for two years, but I feel if you want to grasp skill one language, this language must be often used in our daily life. You must have a atmosphere of studing this language. I suggest that you'd better choose one language you like and learn it, through daily exercise , you could master it skill. Happy mylotting.

Hi there,
I also have some troubles with foreign languages
I got a job offer in hong kong,
I think i have no problem with my english since I practised it a lot everyday
But .. It's the chinese language that stops me
Hahaa.. Actually I'm a chinese, but cannot speak chinese
I think english placed in the first,
Then came chinese and japanese, both in the same place
My biggest obstacles in mastering both language, well chinese mostly, is the environment
I didn't have the environment that support me to practice it
I believe you'll master english faster and better if you've reached US
By the way, your english is good enough .. :D
Thanks !!

I am a Chinese and fond of languages too. I chose to study English when I entered university. Then French became my second foreign language which I am still learning. French is much more difficult than English and it needs more time to take care. I plan to learn some Japanese. I think it's really useful to learn a Asian languages partly because they are easier to learn and I could do it myself. How about the future? I am not sure. Three languages are enough for me to deal with now. If you have a plan, just do it. Languages are always fun.

I would really like to learn a language. The main constaraint is that I have other things on my mind.Like for example how to earn a little extra and how I can achieve that and other family responsibilities.Because of this I have not allocated time for learning a language.I had taken up French as a language in my school days and learnt it for 3 years.I am thinking of joining a refresher course and relearn it.Hope to soon do that!

i've always wanted to learn french and russian. i am fascinated with languages and i'd like to learn as many as i can. i am from the philippines and i can speak two filipino dialects, tagalog and waray. my parents are chinese so i learned to speak chinese, hokkien though, not mandarin. i'd like to learn mandarin as i think next to english, mandarin is the most widely spoken. i really regret cutting chinese classes in school. lol i can also speak english because it is the second language of the philippines. i had spanish classes in college and the philippines has a spanish influence but i'm not fluent at it yet.

Language is only a tool, you should at least skill at somethign else.

I have no plan at all to study many languages but rather I need to improve my english language so I could speak fluently. When I was still in elementary my first goal was I can speak english so I could talk to them in english. This was my very first problem when I was in elementary because our teacher requireds us to speak english and there is a fines when we speak by using dialect.

Dearest wxb123456:
if you know more languages you have the primary key is to watch and read and understand..
watch is movies that corresponds your language needs to know..
read is - reading is the best way of knowing different languages.

I really want to study many languages to understand well people in the countries I travel. I've been learn English as a child, so I treat well with it. Then I've started learning French for 5 years, the first time it was really hard cause I confused it with the English. But I have many french friends and they help me to get it over. Then I've learned Italian. This time it seems easier since italian are very close to french. I'm planning to learn Spanish and I think it will be ok.
My experience tells that
-it had better if you learn foreign languages as a child.
-it's easier to learn the languages close to the ones that you've already known.
I learn a new language if I need to use it in communication, not to become pretentious. Einstein might not know as many languages as you, he's always super.

You have a good plan and it sounds fabulous but it is also very difficult. To handle a language which is not our mother tongue is quite hard. However where there is a will, there is a way.If you set your heart on it,you will succeed.I am learning Japanese now.Hope it will turn out to be a good result.
