Cake concoction

Chocolate sponge on top, vanilla on the bottom, red butter icing in the middle, solid chocolate covering, cherries on top and four candles. Yes it sure is a messy looking cake but that is what the young master ordered. I should have known better than to ask my, soon to be, four year old son what cake he would like for his birthday tomorrow! LOL
Have you ever had any strange food requests to prepare for anyone? Food cravings from your wife? Strange sandwich from your son?

Hi ANTIQUELADY
He did actually say he wanted pancakes on top of it too but I said that he could have them on the side instead as pancakes in the uk are different to those in the US!! They seem to know what they want at the age of 4 or might be just the start of experimenting! LOL
Thanks for your response ANTIQUE

Ewww that sounds positively, er how can Wolfie put this... but then it's for a four year old, bless and what a wonderful imagination he has to dream up that concoction, good luck to you! I would say save me a piece but I'll take a rain check on that! So I take it you'll be busy with your arms covered in flour and such. I haven't had many birthday cakes in my life, but before you get the violin out, it's through choice, I am not a big cake lover to be honest. I am a fussy eater so therefore I am not the easiest person to cook for albeit I have never asked for any strange requests, young or old. Happy baking my dear friend ;0)

Hi ya wolfie34
Yep it is going to be sickly sweet me thinks!! I think he got the idea of the cherries on top from a song he sings at school, I don't think he has really eaten too many cherries so I haven't put many on and can be esily picked off! I think I am a bit caked out alreay as I made one for my mums 60th birthday and that took me several attempts before I got it right, the kids soon cleared it up out the way though!!
Cheers wolfie

I am the only person in my family who has "strange" food likes. If anything the kids complain about the food if I make "real food". My husband will eat pretty much anything I make. Cake sounds pretty good though. Too bad I can't eat it!

Chinese cuisines are much more complicate! So, it is not just something that was threw together!
Hongshaoron, for example, is typically made with pork belly meat, a cut commonly used for making bacon. It is layered with fat and results in a very tender and flavorful pork dish. One can argue that this is rather unhealthy, but I simply cannot justify using any other cut because it is just so wrong otherwise! It is served regularly at home as daily meal and yet can also be served at celebratory occasions. It is quite common to serve this dish with small steamed buns. The buns are often made from round dough folded into half circle resembling a clam shell. One holds a piece of Hong Shao Rou in the steamed bun like hot dog in a bun. These buns can be also purchased from Chinese grocery stores. So without further ado, here is my version of Hong Shau Rou.

That sure is an interesting sounding cake! LOL! I think it's great that you went out of your way to ask your soon to be 4 year old son what kind of cake he wanted and actually going out of your way to make it for him. I'm sure he really appreciates it. To me that's what makes a good parent! I hope he had a great birthday and that he really enjoyed the cake too! Mmmmmmmmmm!

This soundsa just like what a four year old would order. When the twins are 3 in June I am not going to ask them what kind of cake they want but I will put 3 candles on each side of the cake so that they can blow out their own candles!
They both love sponge bob or dora so this is what it will be. You are a terrfic Mum and I hope that he has a fantastic birthday. Blessings

My husband asked me to make a recipe once that he found in a newspaper. I thought some of the ingredients sounded gross, but it actually tasted great.
tomato soup, cream of celery soup. browned beef (brown with brown sugar) cheddar cheese, wide egg noodles.
I hope your son enjoys his birthday cake.
Happy Birthday to you Son.

Hi Humbug, yes it turned out great, infact it is one of our favorite casseroles. It makes such a huge batch so we don't make it as often as others. It sure helps stretch the budget and groceries. LOL.

Actually that cake sounds fun and exciting! I've had lots of people requesting some of my favorite things I make but nothing really odd except now. Last week I had a craving for butter mints and went to the store for some but they didn't have any so I thought I'd try to make some. Well I mixed lots of powdered sugar with lots of butter, added a few drops of green mint oil and it tasted wonderful! Much better then the butter mints in the store, so using my (washed and sterilized) hands, I rolled out dozens of small mints but they wouldn't harden, no matter what I did! So I scooped them all up and made a big ball of the stuff and put it in a sealed clean butter tub and put it in the refrigerator for when I want the flavor of butter mints, and that worked out just fine! Well a few days ago my neighbor came over to visit and we had lunch and pinched off chunks of that butter mint stuff for dessert, it was a big hit, she loved it and now people from all over the neighborhood are asking me to make them tubs of my butter mint stuff! Some have even paid me for it! I made $11.50 so far! They don't want to make it into small mints, they just want it like I first made it, just a big ball in a butter tub! Ha ha ha!!

Hi moondancer
The little one's sure do and my son is such a little charcter it didn't surprise he's come up with such a cake but I don't think it has been totally from his imagination rather than from a cake I did recently for my mum's 60th with a song he sings at school thrown in!!
Thanks moondancer

I take it that you made this cake already? Hope you post a photo! Sounds very interesting!
My son loves Mountain Dew soda and had heard about a Mountain Dew Cake before his birthday last year. That was his request and I had to do a computer search to find a recipe. Turned out really good. Very buttery, actually! A bit too sweet for me, but he loved it!
Ah..... the things we do for those we love!.....

Yes, my kids are always having me make the weirdest things. Like, a wheat bread sandwich with mayo on one slice of the bread, cheese, turkey or ham, grape jelly on the other piece of bread. Yes, you did read that right! Grape jelly in a turkey or ham sandwich. And, they also like a spoon of peanut-butter in their cereal. I tell you just because I did not have weird cravings when I was PG. They are making up for it! LOL
