my neighbor called me when she got home from work & told me the rumor [we hoped it was] going around was that they were having a gang initiation last night at the local wal-mart & they were suppose to kill 3 people. i didn't really think it was anything but a rumor but u can't help but worry about it. i called my son to tell him. i knew he'd think i'd lost it but his wife had gotten a text from someone about it so he couldn't hoot at his mom. i didn't hear anymore about it, thank heavens but wouldn't it worry u? i wondered if wal-mart heard about it & were concerned. we live in a small town w/very little crime going on but u never know nowadays, do you?

Hello ANTIQUELADY! That sounds scary too. I never heard anything about it because I am from the Philippines but receiving that kind of message is really scary. It's like saying, hey watch out! We will put a bomb on that place.

That is definitely a rumor and I'm kind of annoyed that it's making it's rounds again. We had that rumor about a year or so ago where my mother works. She came home and told me about it all paranoid about gangs supposedly taking over Walmart. Well, sorry to bursts everyones bubble but it is FALSE! It's time to stop spreading that stupid rumor!

This sounded very similar to another "gang initiation" rumor that went around years ago. So I checked this out at snopes. Here's a link
http://www.snopes.com/crime/gangs/walmart.asp
I think it's just a re-start of a rumor that's been circulating everywhere. Someone in your area has just grabbed ahold of it.

Well, there you go! It must have taken off again in the last few days then. It's been circulating (according to snopes) since 2005.
Does anyone else remember the one about the Korean gang ititiation? Supposedly, they would shoot to kill anyone who left there hi beams on. I've heard that many people believed that. Law enforcement officials all over the country said that this was completely ficticious.
When in doubt, check with snopes.
How's it going, jo? Good to see you posting discussions!!

That was all over the news where I live and I got a text message from a friend about it. I haven't heard anymore about it either, but I imagine that since it was all over the news, it was either postponed or moved to a different location. The scary thing is, it probably is not a rumor. As soon as I got the text, I sent it to my Mom who lives 900 miles away from me. She never replied, so I hop she got it. You never know what is going to happen these days, it's better to be safe than to be sorry.

I was at a Special Olympics state event yesterday and overheard someone talking about it. I would check it out on Snopes before I would do anything else. Probably hundreds of people all over the country notified their law enforcement. That effectively depletes the resources of the forces while they check it out.

I would take the rumor serious, because you never know, and sometimes rumors can be a good warning sign to be careful and watch your back.
I remember one time there was a rumor near where I live about gang initiation. I can't remember exactly what it was, but I took heed and stayed at home.

oh thats for sure. you cant be safe any where any more. 4 yrs ago, in Glendale here in AZ, a man that was mentally ill shot 2 of the cart gathering boys at Walmart just because a neighbor had made him mad that morning! one was a high school kid and one had a little 2yr old girl and wife he was supporting. everyone said they were both really nice guys and never got smart with customers.

It would have me worried as well. I am sure walmart probably heard about it as well. Hopefully for a while they will take precautions and keep a look out for strange activity from costumers. Just because it didn't happen the night it was supose to doesn't mean it wont happen at all. These days kids are just crazy!

It doesn't sound strange to me. However, it would be sad to constantly live in fear in case some deranged gang banging wannabe decides to go through with the initiation. Just in case, it would help to always look around for suspicious behavior.

No, you never really know. But I'd guess it was a rumor, probably started by kids. I know in my little town (way back in the dark ages) when I was young, some of the rowdier boys used to call the school. They'd call in bomb threats. It was always about an hour or two before school was out, the weather was fantastic, and we had to go outside while the police went through the building.
Since they never found anything, I figured it was the kids themselves calling it in. No proof, of course. Except for the talk around the school by the kids themselves. Maybe we were wrong, but we kind of enjoyed getting out of school for an hour or so. Sad, but kids aren't known for thinking of the big picture.

If you are unsure of it is a rumor or not... You can look up the nearest local Crimestoppers number and call them to at least report what you heard... They take tips and investigate them regularly...
The problem is gangs do use theft as an initiations and will target any store in small or large town.. So I would have taken it serious and reported it through the internet crime stoppers..... and let them investigate it.. the moment I recieved the rumor...
Partly because in the past I have heard rumors that ended up true or heard people state they were gonna do things and later do it.. Like School shootings, and friends murdering their parents and themselves....
It is better to report a rumor... Than to have to live with the guilt of doing nothing...
Here you all go so in the future if you hear a rumor you can report it via Tipsubmit and not have to worry about doing nothing it also lets your report it anonymously.... but if it turns out to prevent an incident or lead to an arrest they also give people rewards...
https://www.tipsubmit.com/
Keep this referance on hand. To help prevent local crimes!
Also how to submit tips on your cell phone!
http://www.smscrimetips.com/
But also be sure to that if you come across real definately information to call 911 or non emergency police instead.
Hope this helps you!

I heard that too jo! I was actually fixing to go to a store next to the Walmart here and my oldest daughter flipped out...no...don't go to walmart! Then she told me a bout the text that the kids at school were getting. I heard about it on the news that night. I started to go just to show her she can't let fear rule her life but I have to say it did make me a little nervous. You never know what people will do in this day and time.

Well some rumors can be done by pranksters just to make people anxious. But I personally would certainly be careful and take the "rumor" seriously because bad elements are rampant anywhere.
Our neighborhood seems peaceful and friendly too at first glance but when you hear the stories of the folks here, I learned about many incidents of theft, and some peeping toms.
Well if there's smoke, there's fire. If rumors are going around, there must be truth in it.
