Jeepney in the Philippines

Jeepney played a big role in my life. My father is a jeepney driver and he made me finished college thru that. When I was a kid. I used to come with him as cashier "kunduktora" but most of the time I slept. lol. There were some things that I realized. Filipino used to fill the last part of the jeepney first to the front. I hate it when I enter the jeep and everybody keep on moving to the last part until the jeep get back to the road and sometimes I got out of balance and had injury. Do you have any experience riding a jeepney? How is it?

Although we have cars I still ride the jeep for practical reasons. It's easily available (our house is just 4 houses away from the jeepney route)and with cheap fare. When I need to go somewhere and no car is available at home, or I have no driver, or I have to go just to a nearby place within jeepney route, I don't have any qualms about riding it. I remember an accident many years ago when the jeep I was in lost its breaks and smashed into an electric post, which leaned precariously on impact. Since I was seated directly behind the driver my ribs hit the iron bar supporting his seat.

OMG! that was so terrible. The main problem of car accident here in the Philippines is no proper maintenance of vehicle, mostly in public utility vehicle. To keep the cost low, driver or the owner will just repair the vehicle if necessary but not on a regular basis for maintenance. You are so Blessed for still being here on earth. Hope to hear more from you.

Indeed it was a blessing I did not have fractures, though I was in pain due to bruises. The irony of it was I was on my way to the hospital to watch my newborn nephew who was very ill. Today whenever I travel I pray for protection, I pray for the driver and those traveling the same road with us.

yeah, as a common filipino in our country, of course there is no doubt about that jeepney is one of our major means of transportation, because of affordability in fares. it is part of my daily routine whenever i go. the funny thing that i experience with jeepney, its not in riding it, but by teaching someone to ride with it. basically, my husband is not fond of riding jeepneys. he usually takes tricycle, aircon bus or taxi when he needs to ride. so when we are going somewhere, i always insist that we ride a jeep coz in that way, we will get to save some fares. and now, he is used in riding jeeps. :)

That's great. You can pass the process to your children. There was a time when I saw a german riding a jeepney with his filipino wife. He got the seat at the back of the driver and he has to take all the fare pass to his hand. He is not comfortable doing that plus he is so tall to fit his height on the ceiling.

Hi! you must be really proud of your Father. Jeepney is very popular here in the Philippines. It can be seen almost anywhere in the Philippines. I like jeepneys which are fast, with sounds or what they say "patok". Especially if the travel time is long. Like the routes of antipolo and Binangonan. Take care.

I think my experience was more embarrassing. i was on my way to school and my bag fell off the jeepney while it was still running. i was on the farthest seat from the driver. i had to tell him to stop. Good thing there were only two passengers. My friend and i..

I ride jeepneys almost everyday. It may not be most comfortable means of transportation but it is cheaper compared to other means of transportation here in the Philippines. It amazes me when jeepneys used to be some sort of art for the filipinos. They are able to bring out the creativity juice in just showcasing the best jeepneys design. Somehow they are able to get customers through such promotion especially when jeepneys look clean and cool. Another thing would be music in the jeepney. Nowadays what concerns me are the numerous thefts and holp up cases in jeeneys. That somehow scares me to use such mode of transportation.

When you compare the mechanism of such holdapers in a jeepney and in a taxi I think the risk is more on riding a taxi or FX. With less people, there is a possibility of life threatening. Wherein in jeepney, with more people, they would just take all the cellphones and money.

I think everyone should be careful wherever they are. Be aware of their surroundings. Be observant to people around you without being rude.

Living in Metro Manila for sometime already Jeepney has become a major means for me to travel from my home to my work. I guess the Jeepneys has become a vital tool to reach our own destinations here in the metropolis especially if you don't own a car to travel in Metro Manila. Although there has been tough competition nowadays as FX has emerge as a new means Jeepney has prevailed over the times. I hope they can stay aground as they are still the best means and cost effective way to travel.

My father also became a jeepney driver for a couple of years... until he decided to go work abroad... and i think that was a good idea... because he was not cut out to be one... and we were having a lot of problems with our jeep with all the maintenance thingy... I hate it when the driver insist that one side can accomodate 8 people without considering the body size of the passengers... i hate to be the last to ride the jeep... but when i am in a hurry... i just go inside and let myself suffer instead of being late for an appointment...

Same here. I hated it when the driver and barter told the coming passenger that he or she is still can seat inside and when on board, the driver will make a way to keep on the road so that the passenger will not have a chance to go back. How was it when your father to leave your family? Well, thank you for sharing.

jeepney is a major means of transportation here in philippines. Everyday i used to ride in a jeepney going to work. Me too, i do love to sit at the last part because i find it more comfortable to sit there compare to middle and first part. I had a bad experience riding a jeepney before and it was disgusting. Despite of that experience i still love to ride jeepney.

Jeepneys, how cool is that? Can only be found in Philippines. I take jeepneys every Tuesday and Wednesday (because my car is coding on this day). I don't mind people moving at the first end where it's easy to access of going down.. I hate it when jeepney drivers wait for too long to get his jeepney filled by passengers and like swerving and stopping in the middle of the road often. It just seriously gets on my nerves. Most of the jeepney drivers have no discipline when it comes to this. And I could have imagine how some traffic enforcer let this sh*t get by, right there infront of them doing it. Ahhhh! Well, this is PI and jeepneys and buses are like the kings of the road. And like if they hit a car or the sort.. They can't even pay a single penny of the damaged they have made. Seriously unlucky on the part of the car driver... Ahhh! Sorry for the whine... But hell am I saying the truth or what?

That is perfectly true! I think there is law that is pursuing in congress that a driver should take a driving lesson where they could learn the proper way of driving with all the road signs that they should be familiar with. Most driver here in the City have a rude attitude but in my town is different. I think they have more decipline..

Wow. That is an amazing story! You father must be very proud you, vice versa. I must admit that riding a jeepney is not one of my favorite things to do but I prefer it over riding a bus. I hate it when it stops and goes. But I do appreciate that the drivers try their hardest to get passengers. I like the honor system that prevails in riding a jeep. One is not given a ticket to be able to ride. It is through a premise that you are honest enough to hand your fare to the driver. It takes a quick mind of the driver to be able to know who paid and who did not. It also takes talent to hand out the change while driving. There are funny experiences in the jeepney. There are times that drivers want the maximize their seating area when the seating capacity works on a premise that everyone is thin. There are also times when a driver cannot hear you when you call him to stop and you end up walking far to your expected location. There are also passengers who chat too loud with their companions that you practically know the story of their lives and you laugh when they laugh.

I think that riding in a jeepney is not just all about riding. From the moment we decided to board inside we accepted the fact that we are not alone. WE have to face the fact that there are different people inside with different personality. The funny is we are learning in someways.

Hello there! uhmm,, of course I experienced riding a jeepney here in the Philippines. Because that's one of the vehicles I used to ride on whenever I'm going on other places, school, going home and others. Uhm,, actually I hate riding jeepney's. Why? Because of the smoke they emit. The smoke is so unpleasant and sometimes visible in color gray. The smokes were so iritating to me. But I have no choice but to ride a jeepney. :)

The smoke was very obvious in the City but when you try to ride a jeepyney in province. It's more pleasant with all the trees, carabao, cow and birds. Thanks.

I ride jeepney everyday, i think it is one of the major transportation here in the Philippines, i find it very convenient to go else where while riding jeepneys for you don't have to worry where you part your car. And also it very affordable riding it. I think the this advantage of this is not having a privacy like using your car and sometimes you can encountered rude passenger.

Hello jralivio! Oh wow! Your story is very inspiring. It should be aired in "Maalaala Mo Kaya" (Would you remember it) I mean, wow! you finished because of hardwork. That's what I noticed too. People would love to sit at the back seat and I admit I do it too..hahaha..Well, my reason is that because it's too hassle when I go down.

When i entered college i have to ride jeepney. I hate it when they have to fill the jeepney even if the last person will not be able to sit anymore. And also, some drivers will wait in every street they will pass for 5-15 minutes then no one will ride in it and you'll be late because of it. But it is one of the major means of transportation and i am used to it.

Your topic is really nice dude. And your father is so cool. I always ride a jeep going to school and riding back home. Well, aside form the fare which is really cheap, it is one of the dependable transportation today. Though sometimes, what I really hate about jeepneys is that it is slow because they have to pick up customers. But, it is okay with me, as long as I am early. Hehehe.

Yeah I post this to some discussions a while a go, and I would gladly share it here about my experience riding a jeep from hell, hell yeah, the so called "TUNGAW" has a lot fans on Stop and Shop terminal on Sta Mesa Metro Manila for its tremendous speed and "banking" experience as you ride with it whether going to school or home. Its funny to remember how some of the passengers would rather go down of the jeep rather than being smashed up by the "bankings" of the jeep. I remember too a girl that almost transferred to the other side of the jeep because of it, Its funny to think because the girl was quite chubby and swaying as the jeep banks. :D It was one kind of a hell ride because I think its pass 9pm so the roads were wide, and you will surely go to hell if the driver makes some mistakes on controlling the jeep that will turn into a big accident.
