Today during lunch, hubby and i ate at a fast food for a change of atmosphere..
While hubby was getting our order, i noticed a not so old woman, around mid-late 40's maybe, who look like a "doña"..
At her back was a nanny wearing a uniform. The nanny goes everywhere this "social climber" go..even at the comfort room!
I wonder what's up with that? Isnt she a little too old to have a nanny? i mean, she doesnt look sick and all so,what's the deal with that?
I think this is what some people call "status symbol"..
I think it's stupid..
What do you think?

Hello fabchic! You shouldn't be shocked with that. As we all know here in the Philippines, people used to have "alalay" because it's not really that expensive. I mean, I don't have a nanny or "alalay" but that's what I noticed for 22 years that I live here in the Philippines. Rich people usually do it.

Hi fabchic!
Well she might be too old to have a nanny but thanks to her this lady has a job
Here in Italy there are many people who hire someone to be company to them. Maybe an older person with no visible health problems but rather than knowing that they are alone, the children club together and pay for someone to be with them always, just as company and to see that nothing happens to them. Maybe the children are abroad and cannot see them as often as they would like. It has nothing much to do with status symbols but with too many people living alone in today's modern world.

well see, those you mentioned are totally different compared to this.
here in my country, sad to say, these kind of situation do exist..
rich people brag about what they have.there is a huge borderline that exist between the rich and the poor.
i mean, if they want companion, shouldn't they just drop the "uniform" thing even when just going out?
and she is not even talking to her..the maid is following her just like a slave..or worse, a dog..
the woman is clearly not alone.her husband is with him.
i see these kind of people here in my country from time to time and really,
it breaks my heart and makes me sick..

Let them show the status symbol if they have money as long as they do not insult the nanny.Let them have a dress code when they are working for others. If it offends them better for them not to work as a nanny.

She could have early set on Alzheimer disease. People early as in their 30's can get this disease.

I am in my early 30's and i have discoverd some symptoms of moderate Alzheimer's deasease. Everything that is important i always make sure to record it to my thick notebook. I also take a memo plus gold to lessen this problem.
This woman maybe have illness that doesn't show her outside physical appearance.

hi! i think what is really bothersome here is the fact that the nanny has to wear a maid's uniform. if the lady was really sick and needs a companion round the clock, what's wrong with letting the nanny just wear her own clothes? i gues pinoys have this way of thinking that if their nannies wear "scrub suits" people will think that they are rich. so generally, i guess it's more of wanting to show off their financial status.

Well maybe its her PA "personal alalay" like the artist have. And to some point she's that rich to have that nanny who follows her so why care about em. We can have and we can attain that status symbol too if we work hard for it. Then we'll gonna show the world the fruits of our hard work.

I use to live in Michigan and in the same town was Muhamad Ali. He owned the MC D's there in town. He would visit it quite often when he was home(his mansion was just down the street). Every time he came around he always had a nanny w/ him. She was also a CN and wore a buiness suit. There were days when you could tell he was pretty bad, but he also had good days. If you didn't know his condition, many people like you would've thought the same thing about him. On those days he was great, smiling and looked totally healthy. but, she was always right there with him.
Also, just because the woman looked like a rich person doesn't mean she was. When I worked the jewelry counter there was a woman that came in almost every week. And each time she did she looked like she stepped out of the stepford wives community and everything on her was perfect. her hair, outfit, etc... she even wore her derby hats that matched her outfit. One look at her, and you would think "rich witch coming in here flaunting her crap".... but she wasn't. She acted like she had the funds, but when it came to actually buying stuff she had no money. She just liked to go out and pretend.
that woman you saw could've been rich or maybe she was just out and about pretending. Nurse aids are covered by some health insurances.
Most of the time there's a medical reason. I would think if she was a healthy woman she wouldn't want someone around like that making her look like she's not independant, which could also explain why she dressed that way.
who knows...those ideas seem to fit with the situation, but i could be wrong.

woww... this is interesting... i never heard before that a person in mid late 40's still has a nanny unless if the person is handicapped... i think the woman just feel lonely and need somebody to accompany her wherever she goes... take care and have a nice day...

Well, if you ask me, that is a laughable case. I mean, come on.. that's what you see in Filipino comedy flicks - a rich "matrona" who's always being escorted by a yaya. While the matrona rolls her eyes while she shuns the people around her, the yaya would do the same.. Hahahaha! Classic!

Hello Fabchic, well i guess i have seen a lot of that things back home and i guess that is what you call reality. There are people in this world that we think how did they deserve to have such and why we don't or if ever we don't want to be like them, we still think about the VIP treatment that most people apply in reality.
I guess we still have to be thankful for what they have or what we do have given to us by God. Even if she feels like a Dona, she is still a human just like you and me and will still have to face problems in life.
Not because we get so annoyed by such status she had in life, there is more to know in other countries, what if you have seen a "maid-looking girl" who is a Dona or feeling like a Dona, i guess that will really pin you down. Sometimes other social climbers are doing more than what you have seen. And they aren't ashamed of themselves for such chipipay bling-blings that they show off. Anyway, just cheer up and be happy about life and what life can be.

I guess i see that same scenario quite regularly also. But I don't really care that much about it. For those who can pay, it's a luxury they deserve and a expense they can afford gives them all the right to do as they please. Although some may give a little low salary for their nanny's who are mostly from the provinces, it helps a little to at least reduce unemployment and street beggars.

there maybe a lot of reason behind that. maybe she is very sickly that she needed someone who can assist her, we don't really have any idea about the health condition of that person. another is that she is really very rich that she needed someone who can assist her in everything she does like in shopping, someone who can bring for her what she had bought. and also there are a lot of rich people who always have their "alalay" at their back, that's how it is if you are really rich, a status symbol i suppose.

Looks can be very deceiving and there probably is a medical reason for the woman to have someone with her constantly.

May be that lady have some problems which we can't just see and know.Even it shall be of status symbol,as you have guessed.Either way,it is up to that lady to have a care taker.Let it not disturb us in any way.Cheers!
