When looking for a job.... (please read)

I have been wondering when I see people applying for a job. There is this attitude I see which I cannot even explain.
I see two kinds of how people apply a job.
1. Some people who apply are very choosy (sorry for the term, I do not know what word I should use), meaning they look for jobs which are for them, meaning they want to start in a higher position when for the fact they should start at the very beginning, an example of what I am saying is my father. He is a graduate of Management and he is looking for a job, he was jobless for a year, I told him that he should look for a temporary job for awhile, while you are waiting to be accepted, but he answers that he doesn't want to because that is not his style. (I really hope you get what I meant in this example.). Meaning to say is, people apply but they are choosing for the job position.
2. Some people who are looking for a job but can't find one because it is hard to find one. What I meant about this is that when someone is applying for a job, they can't are having a hard time because they are not accepted in that position or job. Meaning to say is, people apply but it is hard to have a job.
I apologize for this, I cannot really explain it well because I don't know how to explain it in a matter that you can understand. I really apologize for this.
I want to know is why are people are very choosy in finding a job or is just too hard to find a job that is suitable for you. I am not yet working because I am still student, but if ever time comes I am going to apply, I would like to start from the bottom than from the top.

Some people want to find work that they know they could do well in. Say, they studied for years and the credentials would often imply that they do have to be positioned into a high ranked job but, the problem would be that even if they are qualified, the availability of the position is still dependent on the situation.
For others, they would really do anything just to get a good and perhaps even a stable job.
I am particularly 'choosy' about the work I want and I fortunately got one that I am comfortable with at the moment.
The reasoning for those who are choosy might imply that they have studied hard enough to be in positions that they expect.
On my part, I really don't care if I start from the very beginning since that's how things should be. It wouldn't be surprising if others would suddenly start on positions that are more better, perhaps they are more qualified after all.
Here in our country, jobs are becoming more available but, the job seekers often do want to seek a job that they are comfortable with than just working anything to earn money. Those that do would do any kind of work happens to be on the shorter end of the situation as in even though they are willing to start from the very beginning, the necessary documents that they have are not enough to convince employers at all. (-_-")

Well, in that case which you have mentioned, I guess the applicant has already worked for a similar position and had earned more than what the company is willing to pay so, knowing one's own worth, why settle with something meager when you can actually have something that you truly deserve?
Takes experience I guess for some while others are passive..

I see. I just wondered why some choosy people are more on the money side? I mean, when they ask for this price, the company wouldn't accept it then the person who is applying suddenly says he won't accept the job. I really wonder why.

I understand what you mean, people are different from one another.
Maybe some of the reasons why people want to have a better job is that
their counterparts in college and high school were already having a high
position where they are employed. But we our situations right now, with the recession that the world is experiencing,we need not to be choose, that is also a good idea to start at the entry level then move higher in rank.

hi i hope my answer will benefit your questions...people look for jobs simply because they want to be hired and earn a living.they apply to jobs which they believe is best for them i mean academically..job vacancies often require a college degree or even certifications if you participated in a certain training.that's why some job seekers are "choosy" in accepting a job.they want to make sure that what they have learned during college is applied when they work.meanwhile now a days looking for a job is quite hard because of the worldwide financial crisis.comapanies are not that eager in posting job vacancies simply because to be saved from future expenses like that of salary of their employees. i have been a experienced employee too and as of the moment a bum..i just stay at home but i do have pending applications at the companies i'm just waiting for them to call..=)

I must admit that I am unwilling to start at the bottom.
I earned a Master of Arts degree and a license to practice a certain thing and I need to do what I was trained to do and know how to do...
I can be better of service to people if I do something I am trained to do than if I do something that I am not trained to do.
I have had more than 20 years of experience doing it so no matter what, the employer and I both know that I will not be starting at the bottom level...
But, I will do the work that perhaps someone with less experience will do and get paid less than I have before to do it.
I will not be very picky but I must be somewhat picky...
I cannot afford to work at Burger King as that would not pay the rent on my apartment and as I live alone, I have to do that.
I also do not want my social security payments in my later years to be any more lowered by having an even lower income than I do now....
Far better for me to strive for better than lesser jobs even in a recession.

I think that as hard as it is right now for most people to find a job, no one should be choosy. My opinion has always been that any job is better than no job. If having a job means rearranging my schedule, so be it, I will find a way. If having a job means that I have to work for minimum wage, so be it.

I can't find a job...there are not any jobs available. I am middle aged woman with a degree in education. I have been without a decent job for four years now. In that four years, I have continuously worked in positions that paid much less than my previous employers. I have worked in fast food, as a housekeeper and in a hotel as a front counter person, I even exchanged my services for a hotel room for my kids and I to stay in. I have lowered my expectations, because our society is going through a recession. I have applied to every single fast food restaurant in our town. I worked at Taco Bell for approximately two weeks, but quit because I could make more money subbing. The manager at Taco Bell could not promise me a "set" number of hours, and I was making $7.65 an hour.
I get what you are saying...sometimes we have to start out at an entry level position and work our way up. That's exactly why I took positions at both Taco Bell and Burger King. I have not given up...if something comes along and I am capable, then I will apply for the job. We can't always jump into the drivers seat, sometimes we have to sit in the back seat before we take the wheel.
I would

Everyone needs to get real and resign themselves to starting at the bottom unless they are fortunate enough to be related to the owners of the company. Even that doesn't always work. I knew a guy whose family owned Diamond Vogel Paint, a big paint manufacturer in the middle part of the US. My friend was farmed out to our small community where they had a store and spent several years working low on the totem pole before he got to go back home and take over there. You start at the bottom because you still have a lot to learn, and that's the best way to learn any business from the ground up. People who think they should start at the top aren't being realistic. We all have to earn our places in life, and nothing is going to be handed to us for free.

It is the personal choice. Like I am someone, for whom just finding a job is not too much easy. Plus if I get one, i would definitely want to join one which offers me better package and better position than the current one. Rather what is the point of changing if I have to start from bottom level. Also whjen you are starting the career, better to start from scratch

Hi Taki, you are still young and you may not know how the HR system works.
If a person is holding a managerial position and drawing $9,000 a month and due to the closing down of the company, he is jobless.
Assuming he is not fussy and takes up a job that pays $1,500. A year later, he wants to apply for a managerial position paying $9,500. I can honestly tell you this, he is unlikely to get the job nor the salary. The employer will reason that since you are willing to accept a $1,500 job, why should i pay you $9,500?
So in a sense, your father is right, he should not accept a lower paying job, that will jeopardise his long term prospect.
On the other hand, he should not stay jobless for the whole year. His future employer will perceive him as a person lacking initiative.
What most people do is to set up a consultancy business. At least they can print the name card and introduced themselves as a consultant. Plus a little investment into printing a glossy brochure to impress clients and future boss.
This shows that a person is "pro-active".
Some take up a MBA, so that their resumes will reflect them as a keen and forward-looking person who constantly keep up with the latest market trend.

Well, in my opinion, finding a job is just like to find a love. It is not just your thing. Maybe you think that this job is suitable for you, but there is just your own thinking. The company will feel that you still not the person they want to hire, maybe it is for you lack of experience or skill, maybe they can not pay the salary you want or other. So, there will be very hard to find a job suitable for you and the comany the same. But, i believe, if you were a real talented person and you are professional in your field, that you will find the good job.
Choosy maybe is not a bad thing. It means that this kind of person are strict for themselves, their life, their work; they pursuit perfection. They do not want to start at the very beginning, maybe they really have the ablity for the higher job.
Every person has their own style for life and every person should have their own persistence. We can not change, so do waste time to persuade a person unless they ask you for the suggestion. I think the time will make him know is he right or not.

well i'm stuck in a catch 22. if i apply for a burgerking type job they see i have a degree and say i'm overqualified and if i apply for a job i have the education for i get told i don't have the experience. I keep applying at the bottom but they don't want people with a degree at that level.

It is really weird. Applying in a low level job and they don't want you because of the degree and then apply in the big company then they say you lack experience, I mean... what do they really want anyway? what kind of people do they want to be accepted in a job?

At this point, I am willing to do anything. My town is not hiring.
I live in a place that had a GM plant close down. Thousands of people lost their jobs. ALL the random jobs (fast food, Wal-mart, Target) types went to them. There is nothing left! I can't even get a job cleaning toilets! Oy!
So I decided to go back to school and finish my bachelors degree. :)

It's a good thing that you are willing to work your way up the ladder of career. Some people are afraid of starting out from the bottom, but I praise those who swallow their pride and get a job, even if they have to start way down at the bottom. I would advise you to choose well the company that you will be applying for and do research about the culture of that company, in other words get feedback from people who previously worked there, because it would appear bad in a resume if you have been switching companies in just weeks or even months. It shows no direction in life.
I am person number 2, someone who is applying for a job but can't find one. I am a nurse by profession, but I got out of it because I was burnt out so I headed for another direction which is teaching caregivers in a school. But it was not good paying as well, so I headed for the call center industry who accepts medical and healthcare professionals because it earns well. But in the course of my call center job, I found it to be too rigid, demanding and even competitive and tiring that I can't even pee or take a break. I resigned from the call center job, and began to reasses myself regards to what is the career that suits me best. I really found my passion in Psychiatric Nursing and teaching in a university. I tried to apply to hospitals, but at this point it got a bit frustrating because hospitals are not currently hiring due to the recession. I really wanted to get hospital experience in Psychiatry, but what is the use if no one is hiring? SO I added plan B, and I decided to take the first step by enrolling in a grad school because I wanted to teach, and you can't teach if you have no Masters Degree. To tell you the truth I am scared to go back to school because I might not keep up with the requirements. In the latter part of grad, you need to submit your thesis or research paper which you have to defend in front of a panel of experts.
As of this point, I want to tell you not to dilly dally as I did, going to Nursing then the call center. I would want you to do thorough research about future companies you will be applying for, study their mission and vision, observe how their HR company works for it is reflective of the company as to how HR treats newly hires, workers, bosses and the like.
Now, I wish you luck. Do your best in school and happy company hunting!

Hi taki_takaishi, About your first question why are people are very choosy in finding a job because some people feel ashamed to work for a job that doesn't match their field. Reasons are they may afraid that friends, family or people may criticized them. Now i can say this is not to be tolerated but only the person itself can realized what's important and not but of course situation is case to case basis. However this couldn't be avoided. In some point of our life, we feel a bit ashamed because when it comes to career we always like to feel good and happy to what we choose that is why some people really choose what they like but of course choosing a higher position when in fact your still a starter is not appropriate and too ambitious unless you are really talented and brilliant.
Now on the second question, this is pretty common nowadays even before. Some countries have really high of unemployment because there are only few companies that hire. Every year there are new graduates but few people can only get a job on the spot. Some company only pick few, some are racist, some are unfair and most of lots discriminate which is not really good. Anyway, what your father need is just a good motivation in a way that he will not feel judge and low morale. Sometimes you need to make a person realize something so that he/she can find what he/she is looking for when it comes to career.
Personally i have been to many decent jobs just to survive and gain experiences. I have met a lot of people from different walks of life. I remember when i was working in a shop as a cashier which is too far away from my field i have encountered a lot of people or customer that treat us like a servant which is very disappointing and low morale. They don't respect people working on low jobs which i hate. Very racist of them and inappropriate. That's when i understand the feeling of some people that become choosy because they don't want to experience the same feeling. But-well there are some people who look for a job that its not really appropriate because naturally they are too choosy with no reasonable reason. Like i said it's case to case basis. Now personally i am strong person and i am proud for all the jobs i had and don't care for those inappropriate people because i believe that every decent job is a noble job. They make me feel low but they didn't win because i fight for it which make a better person now. However this days its really hard to find job especially here in our country so its better to be resourceful when it comes to earning like here working online and also its important that when you apply for a job, you make sure that its your field and that your happy to the work you choose because in this you will excel and make yourself successful. Have a nice day!

taki_takaishi,
I sense that you are misreading something and I just cannot help it but to add and point out a few issues here.
As you have mentioned that your dad is a management graduate and hence he would have to apply for a position or job that will require his aptitude and academic achievement(s). He is definitely going for the temporary position if he is qualified but being a graduate here - more often than not he is OVER qualified. To even bother would only be belittling his comprehension ability or to exclude the fact that he is a graduate. May I remind you that it is an offense and insult to falsify our details in a resume and/or CV to prospective companies. Think what will happen to him in the future.
Next, contrary to your thoughts that one should not be choosy when it comes to looking for a job, I would like to tell you to think otherwise. In life, we choose everything from the food we eat, the clothes we wear and even our life partners. So, there is no difference when it comes to our jobs which we will need it for our career. Why should you settle for less when you know that you are worth every penny and grain of it? I feel that it would be a crime to undermine and self pity oneself. You need to enjoy and be happy to stay on your job (take it from me). There's no point in working or rather slogging it out in a place that you do not feel happy, secure or even have the prospect of advancing your career or show your potential capabilities. It will just be unfair to everyone starting with your superiors right down to your working colleagues and yourself at the end of the day. Mind you job hopping does not reflect well on your prospective superiors and they would see lack of commitment, company loyalty and indecisiveness in your ways.
In this capitalist working world today, starting from the bottom is of the past as education has done so much for the business world and it is not only a stepping stone but a LAUNCH PAD for better things and higher posts to come. So, do invest every bit of energy and effort that you have with your academic pursuits and not live a life to regrets later.
Try and look at things on a broader and further perspective. There is more that meets the eye. Check with your dad if you do not understand here.
Cheers and do have a nice day.

I think some people are applying and choosing well about a certain stable company, the salary that they offer to people and the benefits as well.
About your dad who is choosy about starting a lower position, i guess he has his ego or pride that hinders him to get started from any work. As for this year, economy is bad and we need not to choose anymore because all we want is a regular paying job even not paying much, as long as we are employed we should be thankful for it.
But we must accept the fact that people are different in every views and beliefs. Some choose to have a work that is suitable for them even if it takes them years to wait. Others really needed work badly that even if it is a mediocre thing, they will accept it. Happy Mylotting!

Well.. That's an interesting topic. Nice one.
That depends actually. Maybe if a father chose a temporary job his chances of getting the job he really want would lower. That's just one of the many. The thing is, almost everyone in the world would agree that you have to start from bottom to top. Still, some people don't follow that for personal reasons. Who knows?
